You could borrow a free bicycle for two hours, so you could explore the hotel and the beach. The location is quite close to Losari Beach, so you can take a morning walk there. The staff is friendly, the lobby smells good, the rooms are comfortable, and the breakfast is delicious. I was even a little surprised to find Tepache there too.

When visiting specific landmarks like Anjungan MNEK CPI Makassar or Gereja Katolik Paroki Santo Yakobus, respecting local customs is paramount. At religious sites, ensure you dress conservatively, and always ask permission before taking photographs of people. Be mindful of prayer times, and avoid loud conversations or disruptive behaviour. For Anjungan MNEK CPI Makassar, which is a cultural park, general politeness and respect for the exhibits and other visitors are expected. Understanding these nuances ensures a harmonious experience.

Mariso is generally a safe city for international travellers, but like any urban area, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. For transportation, using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is recommended for safety and transparent pricing. It's also advisable to have offline maps downloaded and to carry a local SIM card for easy communication and navigation.

For Filipino travellers, it's important to know emergency contact numbers. In Indonesia, the general emergency number is 112. For specific assistance, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta can be contacted, though it's advisable to check for any consular services or representation in or near Mariso. Carrying travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical emergencies or incidents. Staying informed about any travel advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a prudent step.

Getting to Mariso and Getting Around

Reaching Mariso from the Philippines is a journey that typically involves a flight, with connections often required. Travellers departing from Manila (NAIA/MNL) or Cebu (CEB) can find flights to Makassar's Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), which serves the Mariso region. While direct flights are less common, connecting routes through hubs like Kuala Lumpur or Singapore are readily available. Flight durations can range from approximately 6 to 12 hours, depending on the layover. Prices for flights can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 for a round trip, especially when booked in advance. It's always recommended to book flight tickets early for the best fares.

Once you arrive at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), getting to Mariso and its various neighbourhoods is straightforward. Airport taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available and offer a convenient way to reach your accommodation. The journey to the city centre typically takes 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. Within Mariso itself, getting around is facilitated by a mix of options. Local buses (angkot) are the most economical way to travel between districts, though they can be crowded and follow fixed routes. Taxis and ride-hailing apps provide more comfort and direct service, with Grab being a popular and reliable choice for both car and motorcycle rides.

The best time to visit Mariso generally falls within the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, you can expect sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. The shoulder months of April and October can also offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. While the wet season (October to April) brings occasional rain showers, it also means lower hotel prices and a more tranquil atmosphere, which can be appealing for budget-conscious travellers or those seeking a less crowded experience.

Before you depart for Mariso, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and establishments, carrying some cash is advisable for smaller vendors and local markets. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is a good idea for affordable data and calls. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for communication, and ride-hailing apps like Grab.

The application process for visa-free entry is generally seamless upon arrival at Indonesian immigration. You will typically be asked to present your passport and may need to provide details about your itinerary, including your intended length of stay and accommodation in Mariso. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free entry, it is always prudent to confirm the latest regulations with the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as policies can be subject to change.

While the visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders is convenient, it is always recommended for travellers to verify the most up-to-date visa policies directly with Indonesia's official immigration authorities or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines prior to booking flights. This confirmation ensures that you have the latest information regarding entry requirements, permitted lengths of stay, and any potential changes that might affect your travel plans to Mariso.
