Thank you Citihub again. By chance, I got a new receptionist yesterday, so I had to show my ID. Usually, with the old staff, it's quick. Just deposit and auto check-in. But it's okay, overall it's good. I had a unique experience when they brought me a mukena and prayer mat for the Eid morning prayer. This service is cool. Citihub is always the hotel that is clean, comfortable, with an aesthetic scent from the lobby to the room.

Iconic dishes that define the local food scene include Coto Makassar, a hearty beef soup, and Pallu Basa, another flavourful beef-based stew. Seafood also plays a starring role, with fresh catches prepared in numerous delicious ways, offering an authentic taste of South Sulawesi that distinguishes it from other Indonesian culinary destinations.

For an authentic dining experience, exploring the local markets and food streets is highly recommended. Neighbourhoods like Panakkukang and Mariso also offer a wide array of restaurants, from casual eateries to more established dining venues. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward, as Indonesia is a predominantly Muslim country, and most establishments adhere to Halal practices, especially in areas like Bontoala and its surrounding districts.

Ordering can be done directly from menus or by pointing at dishes displayed in more casual eateries. It's polite to use your right hand for eating and handling food. Embracing the local dining etiquette will enhance your culinary journey and foster positive interactions with the community.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Understanding local etiquette is crucial for a respectful and enjoyable visit to Bontoala. While Makassar is generally welcoming, observing local customs will greatly enhance your interactions. For instance, it's customary to dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or more traditional neighbourhoods; covering shoulders and knees is advisable. When greeting someone, a gentle handshake is common, and it's polite to use your right hand. Bargaining is expected in markets, but always do so with a smile and respect. Avoid pointing with your index finger; use your thumb instead.

When visiting landmarks like Kantor Cahaya Bone Makassar or PT. Asuransi Jiwa Sinarmas - Makassar, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. While these are business and administrative buildings, understanding their function within the local context is key. Dress codes are generally smart casual for business areas, and photography might be restricted in certain official or sensitive zones. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people. Queueing is generally observed, but patience is a virtue, and understanding the local pace of life will prevent frustration.

Safety in Bontoala is comparable to other major Indonesian cities. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. Valuables should be kept secure, and it's wise to avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around, often more so than unmetered taxis. Downloading offline maps and translation apps can be very helpful for navigation and communication, ensuring you can get around confidently.

For Filipino travellers, emergency contacts are vital. In case of emergencies, local police can be reached at 110, and ambulance services at 118. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Makassar itself, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary diplomatic mission. It's always recommended to check the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) website for the latest travel advisories and contact details for Philippine diplomatic missions in Indonesia. Considering travel insurance is also a prudent step for any international trip, covering potential medical needs or unforeseen events.

Travel Guide

Reaching Bontoala from the Philippines involves flying into Makassar's Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG). While direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) are uncommon, travellers can typically find connecting flights through major hubs like Kuala Lumpur (KUL), Singapore (SIN), or Jakarta (CGK). Flight durations can range from 6 to 12 hours or more, depending on the layover. The cost for a round-trip ticket can vary significantly, but budget around ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000, especially if booked in advance. Upon arrival at UPG, you can book a flight to your chosen accommodation in Bontoala.

Getting around Bontoala and the wider Makassar area is relatively straightforward. Local transport options include 'angkot' (minibuses), taxis, and ride-hailing services like Grab, which are very popular and affordable. Angkots are the cheapest but can be confusing for first-time visitors. Taxis are readily available, but it's advisable to ensure they use a meter. Grab offers a convenient and transparent pricing system, making it a preferred choice for many international travellers. For exploring specific neighbourhoods like Losari Beach or Panakkukang, these options provide good accessibility.

The best time to visit Bontoala generally falls during the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and less humid, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and enjoying the coastal areas. The shoulder months of April and October can also be pleasant with fewer crowds. Peak tourist season often coincides with major Indonesian holidays, which can lead to higher hotel prices and busier attractions. For travellers from the US and Europe, this period might align with their summer holidays, while Indian travellers might find the post-monsoon months appealing.

Before departing for Bontoala, ensure you have your passport, which should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and establishments, carrying some cash is essential for markets and smaller vendors. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, Google Translate for language assistance, and the Grab app for transportation. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Indonesia, including the region of Bontoala, understanding the visa requirements is essential. As of current regulations, Philippine citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes for a stay of up to 30 days. This allows for a convenient and straightforward entry process, making it easier for Filipino travellers to plan their trips. It is crucial, however, to always verify the latest visa policies with official Indonesian immigration sources before your travel dates, as regulations can change.

The visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders typically requires that your passport be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Indonesia. You may also be asked to present proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and sometimes proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay. While no visa fee is charged for this visa-free entry, any extensions or stays beyond the permitted period will require proper application and may incur fees. It is always recommended to have your hotel bookings confirmed, as immigration officers may inquire about your accommodation.

While the visa-free status simplifies entry for short tourist stays, it is imperative for all travellers to confirm the most up-to-date visa regulations directly with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines or their official immigration website. Policies can be subject to change without prior notice. Confirming your entry requirements before booking your flight is a prudent step to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey to Bontoala and other destinations within Indonesia.
