Every time I go home for Eid, I'll always choose to stay here. The staff are friendly, especially the security guard—I forgot his name, but he was dark-skinned. When I stayed, he was on the morning shift until 8 PM. In fact, he was friendlier than the night shift staff. Thank you so much, W Three, for making our visit to pay our respects to our grandmother so memorable. Thank you for upgrading our room during our stay, and at no extra charge! Love!

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Ujung Pandang

Ujung Pandang, or Makassar, is a culinary powerhouse within Indonesia, renowned for its distinct and flavourful cuisine that draws influences from its Bugis and Makassar heritage, as well as its history as a major trading port. The city's food scene is a vibrant exploration of fresh seafood, rich spices, and unique preparations that set it apart from other Indonesian destinations. From hearty meat dishes to delicate sweets, Ujung Pandang offers a gastronomic journey that is both deeply traditional and excitingly diverse, promising a treat for every palate.

The culinary landscape of Ujung Pandang is best explored through its signature dishes. Coto Makassar, a rich and aromatic beef soup, is perhaps the most iconic, often served with burasa (a type of rice cake). Another must-try is Pallu Basa, a similar but distinct beef offal soup. For seafood lovers, Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) is a staple, with fresh catches from the surrounding waters expertly prepared. Don't miss Konro, a succulent beef rib soup or grill, and Pisang Epe, a sweet grilled banana dessert drizzled with palm sugar sauce, a popular treat along Pantai Losari.

When it comes to dining locations, Ujung Pandang offers a spectrum from bustling street food stalls to established restaurants. The area around Pantai Losari is famous for its floating seafood restaurants and Pisang Epe vendors, especially vibrant in the evenings. For authentic Coto Makassar and Pallu Basa, exploring local eateries in the city centre or near markets like Pasar Terong is recommended. Many hotels, including those near MTC Karebosi and Fort Rotterdam, also offer excellent Indonesian cuisine, often with Halal-certified options readily available, catering to Muslim travellers seeking traditional flavours.

The cost of dining in Ujung Pandang presents excellent value for international travellers. Street food and local eateries offer delicious meals for as little as ₱ 50-100 per person. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 200-500 per person for a substantial meal, including drinks. Even upscale dining experiences at hotels or specialized restaurants are considerably more affordable than in many Western countries, with a full dinner potentially costing around ₱ 800-1,500 per person. This affordability allows travellers from the US, Europe, and India to indulge in the local cuisine extensively.

Navigating dining etiquette in Ujung Pandang is straightforward and generally relaxed. While tipping is not mandatory, rounding up the bill or leaving a small gratuity (around 5-10%) for exceptional service is appreciated. Meals are typically eaten with a spoon and fork, with the fork used to push food onto the spoon. It's customary to eat with your right hand, especially in more traditional settings. Be open to trying new dishes and don't hesitate to ask for recommendations; locals are usually proud to share their culinary heritage.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Ujung Pandang

Understanding local customs and prioritizing safety are key to a rewarding travel experience in Ujung Pandang. The city, while modernizing, retains strong cultural traditions that visitors should be mindful of. When interacting with locals in Ujung Pandang, it's important to observe general Indonesian etiquette. Greetings are usually warm and polite; a slight nod or a smile is often sufficient. When visiting homes or more traditional establishments, it's customary to remove your shoes before entering. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. While Ujung Pandang is generally a tolerant city, dressing modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or more conservative neighbourhoods, is advisable. Always ask permission before taking photographs of people.

Visiting key landmarks like MTC Karebosi and Fort Rotterdam requires a degree of cultural awareness. While these are tourist-friendly sites, maintaining respectful behaviour is paramount. Dress code is generally casual but avoid overly revealing clothing. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always wise to check for specific restrictions, especially inside historical buildings or museums within Fort Rotterdam. Queuing culture is present, and patience is appreciated. Understanding that these sites are part of the local heritage means treating them with care and respect.

Safety in Ujung Pandang is generally good, but standard precautions apply. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded markets or busy streets. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. Taxis are also an option, but it's advisable to agree on a fare beforehand or ensure the meter is used. For emergencies, the general police number in Indonesia is 110. Ambulance services can be reached via 118. While there isn't a Philippine Embassy in Ujung Pandang itself, the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta is the primary diplomatic mission for Filipinos in Indonesia. It's advisable to have their contact details handy. For urgent assistance or information regarding Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), the OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) can be contacted. It's also prudent for all travellers to consider travel insurance for unforeseen medical needs or emergencies.

Getting to Ujung Pandang and Getting Around

Reaching Ujung Pandang from the Philippines is a journey that connects two vibrant Southeast Asian nations, offering a gateway to the unique culture and landscapes of South Sulawesi. While direct flights are not common, connecting routes provide accessible options for travellers from major Philippine hubs. Understanding the flight options, travel times, and costs is the first step in planning your adventure to this captivating Indonesian city.

Travellers from the Philippines can reach Ujung Pandang, specifically Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), via connecting flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB). Typically, these routes involve a layover in a major hub like Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Singapore (SIN). The total travel time can range from 6 to 12 hours, depending on the layover duration. Flight prices can vary significantly based on the season and booking time, but budget approximately ₱ 15,000 to ₱ 30,000 for a round trip. It is highly recommended to book flight tickets in advance to secure better fares.

Once you arrive at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG), you have several options to get to the city centre of Ujung Pandang, which is about 20-30 kilometers away. Airport taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available and offer a convenient way to reach your accommodation, with fares typically ranging from ₱ 200 to ₱ 400. Public buses also operate, offering a more budget-friendly option, though they may take longer and involve more transfers. Within Ujung Pandang, Grab and Gojek (another popular ride-hailing app) are the most convenient ways to get around, alongside local taxis and the ubiquitous *becak* (cycle rickshaws) for shorter distances.

The best time to visit Ujung Pandang is generally during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and less humid, making it ideal for exploring the city's attractions and nearby natural sites. The shoulder months of April and October can also offer pleasant weather with fewer crowds. While the wet season (November to March) sees more rainfall, it also brings lower accommodation prices and fewer tourists, which might appeal to budget-conscious travellers from the US, Europe, or India.

Before departing for Ujung Pandang, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). While major hotels and some shops accept credit cards, it's wise to carry cash for smaller vendors and local transport. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card at the airport is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps include Grab or Gojek for transport, Google Maps for navigation, and a translation app. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Ujung Pandang, understanding Indonesia's visa regulations is a crucial step. Indonesia generally offers visa-free entry for short stays for citizens of many countries, but it's essential to confirm the specific requirements for Philippine nationals to ensure a smooth entry into the country. Always verify the latest regulations with official sources before making travel arrangements.

Philippine passport holders are typically granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for tourism purposes, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days. This exemption is usually granted upon arrival at the immigration counter. However, it is imperative to ensure your Philippine passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Indonesia and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket. While visa-free, immigration officers reserve the right to request further documentation, such as proof of sufficient funds for your stay.

The application process for any necessary visa, should the visa-free exemption not apply or for longer stays, typically involves submitting an application form, passport, photographs, and supporting documents to the Indonesian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines, or through authorized visa application centres. Fees and processing times can vary, so it is advisable to check the official website of the Indonesian Embassy in Manila for the most current information. Confirming your visa status and requirements well in advance of booking your flights is highly recommended to avoid any last-minute complications.

While Indonesia's immigration policies are generally straightforward for short tourist stays for Philippine citizens, it is always best practice to verify the most up-to-date visa requirements directly with the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia or the Indonesian Embassy in the Philippines before your travel dates. Immigration regulations can change, and staying informed ensures a hassle-free entry into Indonesia for your visit to Ujung Pandang.
