About Indian Heritage Centre

More than just a museum, the Indian Heritage Centre serves as a living space where the history of Singapore's Indian community comes alive. The centre houses five permanent galleries that display precious heirlooms, family photographs, ancient jewellery and artefacts, all of which help tell the story of the Indian diaspora in Southeast Asia and its significant contribution to the growth of Singapore.

Your journey through the museum begins in the 1st century, when South Asia and Southeast Asia first established cultural and trade links. From there, you'll follow the fascinating stories of the Indian diaspora, spanning continents and centuries, and learn about the role that Singaporean Indians have played in shaping the island's history and identity.

Adding to the experience, the IHC incorporates virtual guides, interactive games and behind-the-scenes research exhibits that reveal new insights into the history of this community. As part of the National Heritage Board's network of museums, the Indian Heritage Centre also hosts hands-on workshops, cultural performances and seasonal celebrations, making it a vibrant and enriching place for all.

Indian Heritage Centre Opening Hours

The Indian Heritage Centre is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 AM to 6 PM, with the last admission at 5:30 PM. The Centre is closed every Monday, including public holidays that fall on a Monday, unless otherwise stated.

What is Special about the Indian Heritage Centre?

1. Unique Building Architecture

The IHC building is an attraction in itself. Inspired by the traditional baoli (stepped wells used to collect water), the building blends old-world charm with modern design. 

As you explore the galleries, you'll pass staircases and balconies that resemble the gathering places of India's past. At night, the building's facade lights up, transforming into a mural that reflects the colourful streets of Little India.

2. Permanent and Seasonal Exhibitions

The IHC offers various permanent and seasonal exhibitions, but the main attraction is ‘India in Singapore: Past & Present,’ a permanent gallery that showcases the journey of the Indian community in Singapore, from their early arrival to their contributions today. Special exhibitions and seasonal events are also held regularly, making every visit unique.

3. Guided Tours

To dive deeper into IHC's exhibitions, join one of the free guided tours provided by the Centre. These docent-led tours will take you through 1,000 years of history, from South Asia's early interactions with Southeast Asia to the stories of Singapore's Indian pioneers.

Available in both English and Tamil, the tour lasts 60 minutes and offers a wonderful opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the artefacts on display.

4. Deepavali Open House

If you're in Singapore during October, don't miss the Deepavali Open House at the Indian Heritage Centre. Every weekend, the museum will be filled with festive activities, including cultural performances, craft workshops and family-friendly programmes to celebrate the Festival of Lights. When is the best time to visit the Indian Heritage Centre?

The Indian Heritage Centre is best enjoyed during the day, as it offers guided tours on Tuesdays to Fridays at 11:00 AM and on Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 PM. Alight at Little India MRT Station and take Exit E. From there, it’s a short walk to the Indian Heritage Centre.
