I stayed at Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour for two nights while on vacation, and it was such a great experience! The check-in was super quick, the staff were really friendly, and the room was clean and comfy. The best part? The location! The hotel is right next to a tram stop, so getting around Sydney was a breeze. It’s also just a short walk to the harbour, and there are plenty of cool cafés nearby with amazing coffee. Overall, I loved my stay at Novotel Sydney on Darling Harbour. Totally recommend it!

We had a fabulous stay at Spicers Balfour that lived up to all our expectations of what we have experienced at any of the 3 other Spicers hotels we've stayed in. This one takes the boutique and personal service level up to the next level, with all the staff we dealt with being helpful, easy to deal with, and friendly, ensuring we had a very lovely time there. The room was as shown on the website and although on the slightly small side had everything we needed. The gorgeous little rooftop bar is really special with its beautiful sunset outlook over New Farm & the Story Bridge. The restaurant provided a 5-star meal in a relaxed setting with beautiful, personal service from the waitstaff. The location makes it a park your car and walk/public transport your way to so many entertainment options in the vicinity. Highly recommend the Balfour—we were there for an anniversary "staycation" and it was perfect, and only 15 mins from home.

For Singaporean travellers, exploring Australian cuisine offers a delightful journey, from the iconic flavours of the sea to the hearty tastes of the land, often with a unique contemporary twist that sets it apart from familiar fare.

One of Australia's most celebrated culinary contributions is its seafood. Given its extensive coastline, fresh oysters, prawns, and fish are staples. Think of a perfectly grilled barramundi or succulent Sydney rock oysters – these are flavours that define coastal Australian dining. Beyond seafood, the country has embraced a farm-to-table ethos, with dishes often highlighting seasonal produce. For Muslim travellers, while Australia is generally accommodating, seeking out certified Halal restaurants or areas with a strong Muslim presence, such as parts of Sydney and Melbourne, is advisable for peace of mind.

The regional diversity of Australia is also mirrored in its food. In Queensland, expect tropical fruits and lighter, fresher dishes influenced by its proximity to Asia. Victoria, particularly Melbourne, is renowned for its coffee culture and a sophisticated dining scene that draws from global influences. Western Australia, with its pristine environment, offers exceptional produce, especially from regions like Margaret River, known for its wines and gourmet foods. Even the Australian Outback has its unique flavours, often featuring native ingredients and hearty, traditional fare.

When dining in Australia, understanding local customs can enhance your experience. Meal times are generally similar to Singapore, with lunch typically between 12 pm and 2 pm, and dinner from 6 pm onwards. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for exceptional service, usually around 10% in restaurants. Many establishments offer a "specials" board, highlighting fresh, seasonal dishes. feel free to ask your server for recommendations; they are usually knowledgeable about the menu and local produce.

Local Etiquette & Safety in Australia

Navigating Australian Culture and Staying Secure

Australians are generally known for their friendly, down-to-earth demeanour and a relaxed approach to social interactions. A key aspect of local etiquette is the emphasis on informality and politeness. Simple greetings like "G'day" (hello) are common, and a general sense of consideration for others is valued. While directness is appreciated, it's usually delivered with a friendly tone, so Singaporean travellers should feel comfortable being themselves.

When visiting popular attractions, whether it's a museum, gallery, or natural landmark, respecting the environment and other visitors is paramount. Queuing is orderly, and personal space is generally respected. If visiting religious sites, dress modestly and be mindful of any specific rules regarding photography or silence. In commercial settings, while service is generally efficient, a polite request or a thank you goes a long way in fostering positive interactions.

Australia is a safe country for travellers, but like any destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep valuables secure, especially in crowded tourist areas or on public transport. While ride-sharing apps like Uber are widely available and reliable, familiarizing yourself with local public transport systems in cities like Sydney and Melbourne can be both cost-effective and efficient. Always ensure you are aware of your surroundings, particularly when travelling at night.

In case of emergencies, the national emergency number in Australia is Triple Zero (000). For Singaporean citizens travelling abroad, the Singapore High Commission in Canberra and Consulates-General in Sydney and Melbourne are available for consular assistance. It is always recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, providing an essential layer of security during your trip.

Travel Guide to Australia

Your Journey from Singapore to the Land Down Under

Getting to Australia from Singapore is straightforward, with numerous direct flights available daily from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to major Australian cities like Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), and Perth (PER). Airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Qantas, and Scoot offer various options, with flight durations typically ranging from 7 to 9 hours. Booking your book flight in advance can often secure more favourable fares, especially during peak travel seasons.

Once you arrive in Australia, navigating between cities is convenient. Domestic flights connect major centres quickly, while extensive train and bus networks serve regional areas. For instance, travelling between Sydney and Melbourne by train is a scenic option, though flights are significantly faster. Within cities, public transport systems, including trains, buses, trams (in Melbourne), and ferries (in Sydney), are efficient and well-integrated, making it easy to explore without a car.

The best time to visit Australia from Singapore largely depends on your intended activities and the region you plan to explore. Generally, spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer pleasant weather across much of the country, with milder temperatures and fewer crowds, often translating to better hotel prices. Summer (December to February) is ideal for beach destinations but can be very hot inland, while winter (June to August) is suitable for exploring the warmer northern regions or enjoying snow sports in the Australian Alps.

Before you depart, ensure you have your passport with at least six months of validity remaining. The Australian Dollar (AUD) is the local currency; exchange rates fluctuate, so check current rates against the Singapore Dollar (SGD). Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival or opting for an eSIM can provide affordable data access. Essential apps include those for public transport, maps, and local emergency services. Having digital or physical copies of important documents, including your itinerary and accommodation bookings, is also advisable.

Entry Requirements for Singaporean Citizens

Singaporean citizens travelling to Australia for tourism or short business trips typically require an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor visa, depending on the specific purpose and duration of their stay. These are generally straightforward to obtain online and allow for stays of up to three months. It is crucial to check the latest requirements with the Australian Department of Home Affairs or the Australian Embassy well in advance of your travel dates.

The application process for an ETA or eVisitor visa is usually completed online through the official Australian ETA app or the Department of Home Affairs website. You will need a valid Singaporean passport, and it's recommended to have at least six months of validity remaining. Proof of onward travel and sufficient funds to support your stay may be requested. While not always mandatory for visa applications, comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended for all visitors.

Visa policies and requirements can change, so it is imperative for all Singaporean travellers to verify the most current entry regulations directly with official Australian government sources before making any travel arrangements. Staying informed through the Department of Home Affairs website or the Australian Embassy in Singapore will ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry into the country.

The location of the apartment is in CBD, very centrally located to the malls, street malls, restaurants and public transportation - all within short walking distance. Free Trams are a few blocks away. The apartment itself is not that new as interior and furniture are quite outdated, but it is quite homey. If you want to cook a small meal, a small kitchen is available to be used with all tools and utensils, included dishwasher. Washing machine/dryer is in the premise as well included detergent, so you can wash your laundry with no worry. We stayed 10 nights in Sommerset and had received an excellent services from the staff as they were very attentive to all requests made upon. Overall is a-five star apartment that we called home for 10 nights.
