Room service - I waited an hour and ten minutes for a bowl of mediocre soup which was also tepid when it arrived. I was told it would be 30 minutes. I called after 40 and was told it wound be there soon. It wasn’t.

The Radisson Blue St. Helen’s is an old-school, stately “Grande Dame” of a hotel, with lovely grounds, excellent character and great bones — something I quite enjoy. That said, the decor, the rooms and their functionality are showing their wear and tear and are overdue for renovation and upgrade of basic amenities. Despite having an upgraded room with a beautiful view, the room and bathroom itself was very dark, plugs were lacking, the bathroom light fixtures were old (and in one case not working at all due to faulty wiring that couldn’t be fixed during my stay), bathtubs/showers need modernization, and clothing storage could use expansion/upgrading. On the bright side, staff were very friendly and accommodating, within the scope of what they could do to meet my needs. I appreciated their efforts. In summary: this is a lovely hotel, but for this price-point I would seek out something more modern, with the amenities one expects at this level. That said, I think it could be an excellent choice again in future, with the upgrades mentioned.

Allocated a lovely room, felt safe as single traveller. Bit dated deco in rooms, still shower over bath. Room was a good size and comfortable. Beautiful gardens that I didn’t get time to explore. Staff at breakfast excellent, reception staff friendly and the Orangerie staff were knowledgeable. Had a noise problem with room upstairs, but staff were quick to resolve.

Breakfast was varied and plentyful. I would have liked some brown soda bread and scones. Room was clean, bathroom a but small and needs to be updated. Parking was great. Staff were so lovely, very friendly and nothing was a bother!
