What Guests Say About Their Stay

Suisen was our #1 favorite stay during our 11-night trip in Japan. We spent 2 nights but wished for more. With a dozen rooms, it feels like a cozy B&B run by friends who’ve put thought into everything. The rooms/amenities are very clean, breakfasts simple (with delicious bread), and nighttime snacks prepared with care. Staff dress in black branded tshirts and know your faces, hospitality is next level from orientation to checkout, and you can tell the lounge areas have been curated with someone’s personal touch and artful preferences. The single outdoor onsen (for each gender) is great, but we loved the indoor one even more, especially since the windows open. Suisen was the perfect tatami stay after long days exploring Hakone navigating crowds and surfing on buses “meandering” through the mountain roads. Compare Suisen to another natural onsen we stayed at later. With 450+ rooms, the other place was run like a resort/cruise ship operation. You’re one family in a sea of others, compete for massage chairs/showers, and wait in line to eat. The staff are dressed in fuller uniforms and run around serving all guests. But you get complete breakfast buffets and more baths, pools, and lockers. Along the loop, there are clusters of these resorts; the buses stop right at them. But for Suisen, you have to walk what many would consider to be a narrower-than-average sidewalk. Suisen is more tucked away. It depends on the vibe you want. For us, Suisen was our perfect Mt. Fuji getaway!

Amazing experience at this hot-spring hotel! It's a short walk downhill from Ōhiradai station and from the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel very welcome. The room and facilities were very clean and we loved the breakfast, the lounge with an amazing record collection, the craft beer vending machine, and of course the baths. Note that there is no restaurant for dinner, but they do have delicious frozen prepared foods available for purchase and a kitchen and dining area where you can make them, and the staff is very helpful. It's a modern ryokan experience and we'd love to come back there!

Hotel Suisen was the first ryokan I have stayed in and far exceeded my expectations. The hotel is small and very peaceful, set back from the winding road and just a few minutes walk downhill from the mountain railway station Ohiradai. It is very easily accessible from Tokyo and a Hakone Free Pass covers transport costs as well as the cable car. The staff were very friendly and courteous and provided a comprehensive introduction to the facilities, including the indoor and outdoor thermal baths. The guide also gave details about wearing a yukata provided in the room, which can be worn throughout the day as well as to the onsen. The outdoor onsen was warm, quiet and very relaxing. My room was spacious with a magnificent view of the mountain forest and there was a lovely deep bath in the bathroom. Although dinner is not provided, there are facilities for heating up meals and ready meals are available. Breakfast is simple but plenty of pastries / croissants available. Lake Ashi and trails around the lake an up to Mt.Hakone as well as longer trails are easily accessible by the mountain railway or bus. There are also shops and bars in Ohiradai. I only stayed 2 night after a business trip in Tokyo but definitely somewhere I would like to return to.

Hakone Suisen was a peaceful hotel, and the staff was polite and discreet. After checking in we were given a brief presentation about the facility and the baths, and then we were left to explore on our own. Our room was lovely with beautiful views of the trees and surrounding hills and the fresh wheaty smell of the tatami mats. There was a refrigerator, a tea kettle with green tea, and instructions for how to set up our futons at night and how to use the public baths. This was our first time using public baths, and we were a bit nervous. They ended up being very relaxing. The hotel is small (maybe 14 rooms or so?) and we went at the least busy times (they have a guide), so we had the baths all to ourselves both times we went. We preferred the indoor bath with its "nanobubbles" and beautiful views out the window to the cement wall views and crystal clear water of the outdoor bath. The walk from the train station was short and easy. Just be sure to cross the road at the station and walk down the hill on the raised walk. Do yourself a favor and forward your luggage! Don't burden yourself toting it around the overcrowded transportation system of Hakone. We brought our own dinner which we enjoyed in the hotel dining room. They have microwaves and utensils for guests to use. We enjoyed the small European pastries the hotel served for breakfast, in addition to soup and drinks. The addition of fruit, jam, and butter would be lovely, as would a few hooks in the room.

I really loved this hotel. There are 2 onsen - one indoor (which I found a bit hot) and on outdoor, which was the perfect temperature and which I loved. They provide really lovely amenities - bath products, moisturizer, tea pot and tea. It felt quite luxurious I only cooked in the kitchen once - just the frozen pizza that they sell. It was very clean and well stocked, I just find a grocery store in the places I was in. They serve breakfast each morning, which is basically tea, coffee, juice, and a variety of pastries. There are lovely places to sit to relax or read. It’s a very comfortable hotel and is quite near the ohiridai train station or bus stop for travel into Gora or Hakone Yumoto. However, if like me, you return tired after a long day and don’t feel like taking any more transit, there is really nothing within walking distance. There are frozen meals and a variety of snacks for sale, however.

We stayed here as a family of 4 in March 2026. We stayed in a Japanese style room. The room has a toilet and sink but no shower. There are both indoor and outdoor baths however which we enjoyed! The indoor bath change area is a bit small if there are several people using it at the same time. The outdoor bath is lovely and quiet but with no shower area to shampoo/soap up so you need to go down the stairs to the indoor area to do this. Both outdoor and indoor baths are separated by gender. The Japanese style rooms were very clean and there are instructions available to assist you in setting up the beds for sleeping. A couple of tips: The road from the station to Hakone Suisen is a short walk but it can be very busy with traffic and there is no designated cross walk. Crossing the road during mid day with luggage and children can be a harrowing experience! It was better in the early morning. Also, check in time is exactly 3pm or later. We arrived around 2:45 and were told to wait until after 3 which was fine as there was a nice sitting area and at 3 pm the staff promptly came to check us in. Just don't expect to check in early unless you make prior arrangements. If your commute gets you in before check in in may be worth just leaving bags and going out to enjoy the afternoon. The Open Air Museum was a highlight!
