Overview of Topas Ecolodge
Topas Ecolodge is a hilltop collection of white granite bungalows set inside Hoang Lien National Park, in Ban Lech Village, Thanh Kim commune, in the Ban Ho area of Sa Pa, Lao Cai province, northern Vietnam. The stone was not chosen at random. According to the lodge's own history, the founders were inspired by the white granite of Sa Pa's stone church, built in 1902, and the bungalows were raised from the same kind of local granite, bound with a traditional mix of sand, lime and molasses rather than concrete. Planning began in 2003, and the lodge opened its doors in April 2005, at a time when the site had no electricity, Wi-Fi or mobile reception.
The project grew out of a partnership between a local Sa Pa family and Topas, a Danish travel company that began exploring northern Vietnam in 1993, supported by Danish development funding. Traveloka's listing records the property as a 5-star resort with 50 rooms on a single level, built in 2005 and last renovated in 2022. The lodge describes itself as part of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World collection, and it sits at around 950 metres above sea level, noticeably lower and usually a few degrees warmer than Sa Pa town, which lies at roughly 1,500 metres.
What sets Topas Ecolodge apart from the hotels in central Sa Pa is the setting: a ridge above the Ban Ho valley, surrounded by rice terraces and mountain peaks, with the lodge's restaurants, pools and spa spread across the hills rather than stacked in a tower.
Bungalow and Villa Types at Topas Ecolodge
All accommodation at the lodge takes the form of detached bungalows or villas rather than conventional hotel rooms. The official website lists four categories, presented here from the original bungalow upwards. The lodge notes that its bungalows can be set up with either one king-size bed or two twin beds. Room names on Traveloka may differ, so check the room list on this page for what is currently bookable.
Premium Executive Bungalow
Described by the lodge as "the one that started it all", the Premium Executive Bungalow measures 28.5 square metres and sleeps up to three adults, or two adults with one child under 12 and one child up to six. Stone walls, wooden furnishings and neutral-toned bedding set the tone, and a large private balcony looks out over the mountains and valleys. The official site lists a bathroom with a rain shower, two-way air conditioning and heating, an eco-bar, a desk, hairdryer, safety box, umbrellas, duvets and mosquito nets.
Garden Suite Bungalow
The Garden Suite is a two-storey, chalet-style duplex of 56 square metres in white granite with wooden furniture. It sleeps up to three adults, or two adults and two children under 12. The official listing includes a living room, one bedroom, a full bathroom with a stone-carved bathtub and rain shower, an additional half bathroom, a private balcony facing pine trees and terraced valleys, two-way air conditioning and heating, an eco-bar and a humidifier. The lodge notes that a Garden Suite can be combined with Premium Executive Bungalows via a shared garden, which suits families or small groups travelling together.
Deluxe Suite Bungalow
At 60 square metres, the Deluxe Suite is the largest of the bungalow categories and is also built as a two-storey duplex with views from both floors. The lodge highlights its sustainable technology, including heated floors and water heated via air pumps. The official site lists a living room, one bedroom, a full bathroom with a ceramic bathtub and rain shower, a half bathroom, a large walk-in closet, a private balcony, an eco-bar, a humidifier and a French press. Maximum occupancy is three adults with two young children, or two adults with three children under 12.
Pool Villa
The Pool Villas sit at the top of the category ladder and are positioned near the lodge's highest point. Each has its own private pool, which the lodge describes as eco-heated, plus a terrace and a large veranda with views over the mountains and rice terraces. The official listing includes Scandinavian-style handmade furniture, a living room with a sofa bed, an en-suite bathroom, underfloor heating, an eco-bar, a desk and air conditioning. The villas sleep two adults with two children under 12, or three adults with one child up to six.
Across the property, Traveloka's listing notes in-room facilities such as a desk, hairdryer, in-room safe, minibar, refrigerator and shower, and the property operates at 220 volts. Per-room details can vary, so review the specific room on this page before you book.
Facilities and Amenities
For a 50-bungalow lodge, Topas Ecolodge carries a broad set of facilities, most of them designed around the views. The two pools are the centrepiece. According to the official website, the upper-level infinity pool is heated with an eco-friendly system and has a shallow 70-centimetre section for children, while the lower pool is unheated, comes with a jacuzzi and is designated adults-only. Traveloka's listing records both an outdoor heated pool and a children's pool.
- Rice Spa: located at the lodge's highest point, offering massages, organic facials, body wraps and traditional Red Dao herbal baths.
- Pools: an upper infinity pool with a pool bar alongside, and a lower adults-only pool.
- Dining and drinks: three restaurants and two bars, according to Traveloka's property data, plus a cafe and coffee shop.
- Recreation: cycling, guided tours and excursions arranged by the lodge.
- Services: a 24-hour receptionist, laundry service, luggage storage, porters, room service and wedding services.
- Practical extras: Wi-Fi in public areas, a safety deposit box, on-site parking (listed as limited) and a gift shop nearby.
- Transport: an area shuttle, train station pickup and airport transfer, some of which carry a surcharge.
The lodge also has a clear sustainability focus. Its arrival notes explain that it works to reduce single-use plastic, gives every guest a stainless-steel refillable bottle at check-in and runs a water refill station at reception. The same notes state that over 95% of the team come from surrounding villages and communities, which is a large part of the lodge's character.
Location and Getting There
Topas Ecolodge lies in the Ban Ho area of Sa Pa district, within Hoang Lien National Park, roughly 45 minutes from Sa Pa town according to the official website. The lodge's remote position is the point of staying here, but it also means planning your transport in advance.
- From Hanoi by lodge transfer: the lodge runs its own scheduled limousine van, the Topas Mountain Express, which departs Hanoi in the early morning and reaches the property around midday. Seats are limited to a small number of passengers per vehicle, so the lodge recommends reserving ahead.
- By train: overnight trains run to Lao Cai station, which the lodge notes is about 38 kilometres from Sa Pa town. A private transfer from the station can be arranged, and Traveloka's listing includes train station pickup.
- By bus to Sa Pa town: local buses run to Sa Pa, and the lodge operates a shuttle between the property and its town stop on Le Van Tam Street several times a day. Book at least three hours ahead and confirm the current timetable.
- By your own vehicle: an entrance ticket is charged at the Hoang Lien National Park gate, and the team will guide you to the parking area after check-in.
Most international visitors start their journey in Hanoi, so it is worth starting with flights to Hanoi on Traveloka and building the overland leg from there. On arrival, guests check in at a roadside Welcome House, around 300 metres from the main lodge building.
Around the lodge, the landscape is all rice terraces, forests and villages of the Hmong, Tay and Dao communities, which the lodge's own guided excursions explore away from the busier trekking areas near town.
Dining at Topas Ecolodge
Because the nearest town is a fair drive away, most guests take their meals on site, and the lodge has built a dining programme to match. The official website lists the following outlets:
- Restaurant 360: perched on the first hill overlooking the Ban Ho valley and Hoang Lien National Park, focusing on Western cuisine, including steaks and fresh fish.
- Stilt House Restaurant: on the second floor of a traditional Tay stilt house, serving northern and southern Vietnamese dishes alongside international options.
- Pavilion Restaurant: an open-air venue hosting hilltop barbecue dinners on selected evenings, weather permitting. The lodge asks guests to book at reception earlier in the day.
- Infinity Pool Bar: beside the upper pool, serving drinks plus snacks, tapas and fruit during the day.
- Inn Bar: on the ground floor of the stilt house, with an open stone fireplace, wines, cocktails and finger food.
Traveloka's listing confirms breakfast is served from 07:00 to 10:00, with à la carte and set-menu lunches and dinners plus vegetarian meals. The lodge can cater to most special diets if told in advance, so mention any requirements when you book. Outside food and drinks are not permitted, with the exception of your own bottle of wine, which carries a corkage fee. If you want to pair a meal with time out exploring, browse Sa Pa activities and tours on Traveloka to fill the rest of your itinerary.
During the Christmas and New Year period, the property's policy notes that festive gala dinners may be mandatory for staying guests, with a charge payable at check-in. Check the property policy on this page if your dates fall over the holidays.
Why Stay at Topas Ecolodge
Unlike the hotels clustered in Sa Pa's town centre, Topas Ecolodge has granite bungalows are spread over a quiet ridge in a national park, and the experience centres on the view from your own balcony, the pools facing the valley and excursions into villages that see far fewer visitors.
- A distinctive story: a lodge founded in 2005 through a Danish-Vietnamese partnership and built from local white granite.
- Bungalows, not rooms: every category is a standalone bungalow or villa with a balcony or terrace, and the Pool Villas add private pools.
- Wellness on site: Rice Spa, Red Dao herbal baths and two pools, one of them adults-only.
- Community roots: most of the team comes from nearby villages, and the lodge supports local social initiatives.
- Family-friendly options: duplex suites with space for children and a shallow children's section in the upper pool.
If you would rather be steps from Sa Pa's night market and restaurants, or you are combining Sa Pa with other parts of Vietnam, you can compare other hotels on Traveloka and split your stay between the town and the valley.
