Bathroom was looking tired, tiles loose on wall and taps falling apart. Silicone needed replacing. No air conditioning available despite the controllers etc present. Fans provided but those weren’t much help. Breakfast was good and externally hotel looked lovely

The Coal Exchange is a grand old building with an interesting history, but that’s no excuse for how shabby and dim it is. I feel like it could be thoroughly modernised without losing any of its historical charm. It wasn’t made obvious to me when I booked on Expedia, but I had apparently booked a wheelchair accessible room - I guess it was the last room available at the price I wanted to pay. It was like staying in a dark hot dungeon. It was dark because it only had one window and it looked out onto the entranceway at ground level, thereby affording no privacy - I didn’t feel that I could open either the curtain or the window. There were two fans in the room that just blew the warm air around. A member of staff told me they were planning to start putting aircon into the rooms but they didn’t know when. Every room in the hotel is supposed to have a big jacuzzi bathtub but, it turns out, the accessible room just has a big wet room with a shower, no bath at all. I thought I was treating myself when I booked this stay but I would’ve been much better off in a cheaper, more modern hotel.

This is very nice historic place and you can see and feel the history all around you. Sadly we were there on one of the hottest day of the year and there is no air conditioning in the rooms. For a 2 double bed big room they gave us a single fan and response from reception wasn't very good when asked for another one fan as the inside was hotter than outside for a sun facing room. There are few paid parking just outside the hotel or multistorey parking with in a 5 minute walk.

We stayed overnight here out of curiosity because I was interested in the history of the building. My daughter lives very close by so we were curious to see what it was like. It is quite stunning, once inside the building has been well preserved, lots of wood panelling and interesting decor. Our room, the presidential suite was comfortable and large with an enormous bed. It was a very hot night but they’d left us a fan and while the heatwave is on we travel with another fan just in case. The only real negative was the internet wasn’t working the whole time we were there and we had literally no signal in the room. I’d stay again as it’s so convenient, breakfast was in the large dining room which was such a cool space! I think if you’re a fan of history (or perhaps Dr Who) it’s a good location.

Don’t stay at this hotel June to September. It is not able to handle hot weather. Our room was like sauna. The WiFi was poor at best with no or poor internet connection many times. The hot water was only warm at best. The building was a land mark and very interesting. The room was very large with a 12 foot ceiling

No air conditioning in the hotel so when we stayed on the 9th July the room was extremely uncomfortable. Bear this in mind when booking this hotel

The hotel is promoted to be grand and up market and the reality is that it’s so run down and in serious need of renovation. Every room has its own unique bad smell; corridors - musky, lift - BO, restaurant - indescribable but stale would resemble it. The whole place is dark and dingy, sparse and difficult to see how it’s sustainable. I appreciate the history of the building but I’ve never experienced anything like this… it was like a rabbit warren of run down office doors and endless empty unused spaces and corridors. Some areas were being renovated but left uncovered and an eyesore. Really disappointing as I booked it for a special birthday surprise… a surprise is what we got and it wasn’t welcomed.

The hotel is very picturesque and still has it's original charm of the old coal exchange the bedroom (presidential suite) was comfortable but needed a refresh the headboard and the bottom of the bed looked worn out the room needed to be dusted on the wardrobe and hoovered fully the jacuzzi bath tub was very relaxing and nice to sit and chill in the bath , the breakfast was fresh and tasty there was plenty of food choose from hot and cold the toaster took a long time to warm up and toast the bread, the staff where very polite and freindly the only down side was we asked for fresh towels and a hair dryer in the afternoon and didn't get either i had to go back down in the evening to ask again for towels to get some, we was told there was no spare hair dryers available we asked again in the morning and got one and got told there where a few spare, when we checked in we was given a QR code for room service that was until 2am we went to try to order room service at around 11 30pm and was unable to as it wouldnt let you orderel to your room only to a table, overall i'd give the property a 6 out of 10

Hotel is in historical building and while that had it upsides, it also had its downsides such as no air conditioning (we visited during the heat wave). The wifi in the room barely connected and this was not convenient. The hotel was however close to bus stations and to Cardiff bay plus staff members were helpful.

I didn't appreciate being charged for a slightly early check-in. I think this is a rip off that seems to be creeping in too often these days. Fortunately most hotels don't charge.

Beautiful building, staff were very friendly and polite. Breakfast was great! Unfortunately the fan in our room couldnt compete with the heat and due to being a ground floor room at the front of the building where the seating was we didn't feel comfortable having the window open.
