About THAI Smile

Thai Smile Airways (IATA code: WE), previously known as Thai Wings, is one of the leading low-cost carriers in Thailand which was established in 2012. The airline is an exclusively owned subsidiary of Thai Airways International, which has its basis of operation both at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Muang (DMK). THAI Smile serves flights to 28 destinations in eight countries across Asia, including China, India, Bangladesh, Laos, and Malaysia. According to Ampon Kittiampon, the airline’s chairman, THAI Smile was created with the purpose to diminish the gap between full-service airlines and low-cost carriers. THAI Smile commenced its first flight operation within Thailand on 7 July 2012. Although the new airline has just begun its operation and has served passengers for close to five years, THAI Smile has earned positive feedback and top reviews from Skytrax. It has a comfortable, clean cabin and amazing service. The check-in service, as well as the drop baggage service, is top rated. The company’s slogan is “Fly Smart, Fly Sabai, Fly with Thai Smile”, which is promoted under its brand concept of “Trendy-Worthy-Friendly”. THAI Smile has been recognized as the best affordable airline in Thailand. The airline offers special privileges for its frequent flyers, who have been registered as members of Royal Orchid Plus. Members of Royal Orchid Plus have a great opportunity to earn miles from flights operated by THAI Smile or by Thai Airways. All Royal Orchid Plus members will also get an additional baggage allowance. Moreover, Royal Orchid Plus Platinum and Royal Orchid Plus Gold members will get to enjoy even more benefits, such as priority check-in, priority boarding, and priority baggage handling. They can also enjoy a complimentary airport lounge access to both THAI Royal Orchid Lounge and THAI Smile branded lounge. THAI Smile also offers two economy classes—a premium economy class known as Smile Plus and an economy class known as Smile. Passengers of both classes can enjoy snacks, meals, and beverages onboard, while taking comfort in each of their cozy seats. Additionally, passengers can also choose their seats without extra free and reserve them online from 120 days before departure. For entertainment, passengers can find a copy of the We Smile magazine in the pocket of the seat in front of them and enjoy a Canadian comedy show on screen. Additionally, Smile Plus passengers are entitled to a free baggage allowance of 30 kg, while Smile passengers are allowed a maximum of 20 kg. THAI Smile also gives a free checked baggage of 10 kg to infant passengers not occupying a seat. Passengers must ensure that their checked baggage does not exceed 56 cm in length, 45 cm in width, and 25 cm in thickness. THAI Smile passengers are also allowed a cabin baggage. The cabin baggage must not weigh more than 7 kg (15 pounds). Cabin baggage must be placed in the overhead compartment above the passengers’ seat or underneath the seat in front of them. Passengers also must understand what sorts of item can be carried during the flight. Items which, according to the regulation of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), potentially can harm or endanger other passengers, such as firearms, ammunition, and weapons, including swords, knives, and others, are not allowed to be carried on board. Other items prohibited by the laws—fragile, flammable, or nonflammable—are absolutely banned. Passengers also may not carry frozen seafood or meats if they are not packed properly. THAI Smile requires its passengers and their baggage to pass the search, x-ray, or any other types of security checkpoints for safety reasons. The staffs will check the passengers’ baggage thoroughly and make sure that they follow the airline’s terms and condition. Should the passengers decline to undergo the scan process, the airline has a right to refuse the passengers’ belongings without refund or any other liability. The company is not responsible for any injury that the passengers suffer, or any damage to their baggage, from the security scanning process. THAI Smile recommend passengers to arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to departure so that they have enough time for checking in, security and safety scanning, and boarding. Passengers are required to check in at THAI Smile check-in counter from two hours to 60 minutes prior to their departure. During the check-in process, passengers are required to present all travel documents such as an identification document with an attached self-photo (a passport for international flight and a Thai ID card for domestic flight), a document related to health, and other documents, which would need approvals from the government of the destination country, and which are required by law or certain regulation. THAI Smile Airways also has the right to deny passengers with certain conditions related to status, behavior, mentality, or age, such as an action that threatens other people’s safety or an action which is against law and regulation. Passengers will be denied if they show intentions for misconduct, do not understand the airline’s policy, refuse to get through the security scan, have not completed payment, cannot provide travel documents, and present false, modified, or damaged travel documents.

THAI Smile History

THAI Smile was initially created by the Thai Airways board to accommodate Thai people needing to fly within Thailand with affordable fare. Thai Airways then announced its plan to make a new low-cost airline on 20 May 2011. The chairman of Thai Airways, Ampon Kittiampon, officially announced the creation of THAI Smile Airways on 19 August 2011. The plan to create the new airline was considered as a bright idea, as it would enable greater access to cheaper travels. When it was first established, THAI Smile was known as Thai Wings. The name Thai Wings was thought to be unfashionable and unattractive for the current market, so Thai Smile was finally selected after the airline held a contest to rename the airline. The chic name was considered as the most captivating pick among 2,229 entries. Within two years of flight operation, THAI Smile came up with a great plan to unveil its annual profit of about 5 million baht (around USD 145,000). THAI Smile began its flight operation with Airbus 320 on 7 July 2012 from Bangkok to Macau. At that time, the airline served two flights per day. In the same year, a new route to Luang Prabhang was opened, enabling Thai people as well as foreigners to explore northern Laos. Soon, travelers flying with THAI Smile were able to discover Chongqing and Changsa in China too. Flying to these new Chinese destinations had a purpose, that is to grow both countries’ tourism sector. Then, on 31 March 2013, THAI Smile flew to a new destination: Mandalay, Myanmar. The flight flies directly from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok to Mandalay International Airport (MDL) in Mandalay, Myanmar, and vice versa. On 31 March 2014, THAI Smile was awarded with the Aviation Operation Certificate (AOC) by the Department of Civil Aviation. On 10 April 2014, the airline finally earned its IATA code, and with that, the airline began to spread its wings to more countries in Asia. By 2014, THAI Smile had successfully operated 10 round-trip domestic routes in Thailand. The 10 domestic routes were Bangkok–Chiang Mai, Bangkok–Khon Kaen, Bangkok–Chiang Rai, Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok–Udon Thani, Bangkok–Phuket, Bangkok–Hat Yai, Bangkok–Krabi, Bangkok–Surat Thani, and Chiang Mai–Phuket. Seven round-trip international routes were then added. They were Bangkok–Macau, Bangkok–Chongqing, Bangkok–Mandalay, and Bangkok–Changsha. The round-trip international flight to Vientiane was operated on 26 October 2014. On 8 August 2015, THAI Smile added flight services to and from Don Muang airport. The airline operated three domestic flight routes from Don Muang airport, flying three times per day from Don Muang to Chiang Mai, three times per day from Don Muang to Khon Kaen, and two times per day from Don Muang to Phuket. THAI Smile also had the amazing chance to host an event called Amazing Thailand on 16 October 2014. The event was aimed to promote Thailand as one of the best destinations in Asia. On that occasion, THAI Smile Acting Chief Executive Officer Woranate Laprabang and the THAI Smile Marketing Analysis Director Khun Oranong Sudkungwan also attended the event to introduce THAI Smile’s new service, which was additional international flights between Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Macau International Airport.
