Macdonald Berystede Hotel

Terrible, rude staff, very poor to non existing management. Overpriced food. Breakfast was very poor quality and badly cooked food and very badly organised. Bedroom clean but very cold. Outside spa pool was nice but dirty around the edges. Steam and sauna broken and spa closed earlier than stated. Lack of decent friendly staff is very obvious problem at this hotel sadly and no management in site. Sadly can't recommend this hotel and won't be back

Great hotel would recommend

Roman lovely & spacious. Comfortable beds & bedding, room was cold but we managed to warm it up. Staff were friendly. Bathroom & furniture was a bit shabby & no shower gel in the dispensers. Would stay again though despite these things.

The website photos presented a more luxurious hotel than our experience. What attracted us to book was that it is advertised as a hotel with a spa, and we were most looking forward to the small heated outdoor pool. Unfortunately it wasn't clear when we booked that on Boxing the pool/sauna/steam room closed at 6pm, so as we couldn't arrive until after 6pm, we could only use the spa facilities the next morning for a short time. Also disappointedly, the outdoor pool was broken over Christmas, which made this a very ordinary spa experience. The salt room also wasn't working. Our deluxe double room was comfortable, but it and the corridors could do with a little TLC. The carpet and curtains seem dated, and the woodwork paint was a bit worn. Our fridge didn't work. Breakfast was poor for a 4 star hotel, in terms of variety and quality. On the plus side, all the staff were excellent, and the hotel was very clean. Our room's bathroom has been modernised, unlike the room itself. So all in all, it was an OK stay but the hotel is not really as the image it projects itself to be.

The hotel needs an urgent renovation. The room is very outdated and worn out. Bathroom sink was broken. Smells come from the dirty looking carpet - I guess because I saw many dogs - and even one doing a wee on the carpet floor. Breakfast was very limited and a latte or a cappuccino is extra charged. The swimming pool and saunas are nice though!

Room was noisy. And smelt odd. No phone in room. Breakfast ok, but the eggs were very unusual. Like rubbery white part! Sausage cold in middle. Not warm - cold. Spa ok but steam room lit up like Wembley floodlights. Bar is nice area.

Lovely characterful, traditional hotel, helpful staff. Good place to stay on a business trip.

Room smelt a bit. Noisy. No upgrade given despite Expedia level. Opening window not possible. No fridge in room. Couldn’t see aircond. Basic.

Nice, safe and peaceful

Room was old and in need of updating. Sound proofing no existent and we could here everything in rooms either side. No internet and poor evening meal. On the upside great cooled breakfast.

Had stayed here a few days. Foyer and exterior on arrival is excellent. Rooms felt very tired and dated. TV didn’t work ;was reported and the staff couldn’t get it fixed either……. No channels). Breakfast service was pleasant enough. Nice setting. Just felt like it had been warned from the day before (sausages and bacon). Cheese looked like it had been left out too long and was crying out for help. - bed was comfortable enough, and had a good sleep. - Staff were very friendly and all clearly did the best they could within their control. - Spa was clearly having maintenance, so couldn’t use showers or mens dressing room. Pool was pleasant enough, my limited on this visit

Spa is good and pool is a good size but the outdoor jets were not working which was disappointing. Good sound booking though.

A comfortable bed with nice linen. The bathroom is dated and needs replacing. Could be better lit from the car park to reception. Breakfast was fine - not terrible not great.

The water didn’t run either cold or hot just like warm. There was a messy area outside our window with roll pallets and crates. We were in a room by the stairs and the creaky floor boards were very noisy. On the first day at 3pm I had to request our room be made up and then on the second morning we were woken up at 8pm with house cleaning wanting to make up our room which we were vacating that morning.

Great service from booking in til leaving, everything was spot on spa food and room

The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. However the bedside lamp on the left was missing which was inconvenient. The safe didn't work again inconvenient probably due to non working batteries which were exposed. The TV remote didn't work probably due to dead batteries. All these issues were inconvenient but as we were only staying for one night we managed. These issues were reported to reception .

Good spa service and excellent meal.

I’m afraid this was totally disappointing. The room upgrade arranged in advance wasn’t done to accommodate our son, meaning we had to move from one room to the other. The mattress was knackered and they failed to change it after two requests. We intended to stay two nights but in the end left after one after my partner and I failed to get any sleep. I wasn’t charged for the second night and intend on ensuring we get a refund for the first night via the hotel or through a chargeback via our credit card.
