Flights to Colombia might be long, but so’s the list of reasons to go. Medellin’s eternal spring weather? Tick. Coffee straight from the source? Tick. Salsa, street art, and the Andes? Tick, tick, tick. It’s a big trip from Australia, but with the right carrier and timing, you can keep the stopovers short and the savings high. Here’s how to get there without blowing your budget…or your patience.
There aren’t direct flights to Colombia from Australia at this time, so flight lengths will depend on the length of layovers and where your connection will take place. These are the shortest-available flights to Colombia from major cities in Australia we’re currently finding.
El Dorado International Airport (BOG), Bogotá
José María Córdova International Airport (MDE), Medellin
There are no direct flights from Australia just yet, but plenty of great airlines will get you to Colombia with quick stopovers and a smooth long-haul experience.
Sitting 15 kms west of Bogotá’s centre, El Dorado International Airport is the main gateway into Colombia. Taxis are cheap, safe, and run 24/7 straight to your hotel. If you’re watching your pesos, take the free shuttle to Portal El Dorado and hop on the K86 bus into the city. Or skip the guesswork altogether with a private transfer—ideal if you're landing late or just want things sorted.
About 35 kms from the city in Rionegro, Jose Maria Cordova International Airport is where you’ll land if Medellin is calling. Taxis or private transfers are the easiest; about 30 minutes, and you’re in. Shared “colectivo” taxis are cheaper but drop you at San Diego mall, so you’ll need a second ride after that. Public buses are the bargain option, with two drop-offs: San Diego or El-Centro.
Want to save a few hundred bucks? Aim for February. It's the cheapest month, and the December to March window generally has better deals across the board. Steer clear of November and the July to September period; those months tend to sting the wallet with higher fares and fewer promos.
If you're visiting for less than 90 days, you likely won’t need a visa. Just have proof of your return or onward flight and enough cash to cover your stay.
For international flights to Colombia, get to your home airport at least three hours before departure.
