Melbourne is a city that celebrates rhythm and colour, where vibrant street art and aromas of a freshly brewed cup of joe are found at every turn. Whether you’re here to indulge in its famous coffee culture or you’ve planned a visit in line with major sporting events that light up the city like the Australian Open or F1, Melbourne invites you to wander, taste, and unwind.
Melbourne is home to two airports, Tullamarine, just north of the city, and Avalon, which is southwest of the city near Geelong. Tullamarine is the bigger and busier of the two, with the majority of flights coming into the city landing there.
Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL) is the primary international and domestic airport in Melbourne and is located about 23 kms northwest of the city centre. You can hop onto the SkyBus express to get from the airport to the city in around 30-40 minutes (depending on traffic). Alternatively, you can book an Uber for a comfortable door-to-door service.
Melbourne Avalon Airport (AVV) is a much smaller airport in comparison, and is located 50 kms southwest of central Melbourne. It’s closer to Geelong and generally serves low-cost regional flights. Nonetheless, it’ll take you an hour to drive from Avalon Airport to Melbourne’s city centre, and the easiest way to get to and from the airport is by taxi or car hire.
The cheapest time to fly to Melbourne is generally in winter, around June to August. Demand during this time is lower, and many airlines tend to offer cheaper fares as a result. If you’re visiting during winter, you can expect fewer crowds and a more authentic, local experience of Melbourne — as well as cooler temperatures, so remember to pack a beanie.
As Melbourne is a domestic destination within Australia, you won’t need a visa to visit. Just have a valid form of photo ID with you, such as your passport or Australian driver's licence.
When catching a flight to Melbourne from any major city in Australia, it’s a good idea to arrive at the airport around two hours before takeoff. This ensures you have enough time for check-in, security checks, and dropping off your bags, with a little extra to relax or grab a quick refreshment before boarding.
