More about hotels in Japan

Japan: A Tapestry of Tradition and Tomorrow for the Global Explorer

Japan draws travellers with a unique duality, seamlessly blending ancient traditions with cutting-edge modernity. For visitors from the United States and Europe, this is a destination that offers experiences profoundly different from their own, a chance to step into a world where meticulous craftsmanship, serene natural beauty, and a deeply ingrained sense of respect permeate daily life. From the neon-drenched streets of Tokyo to the tranquil bamboo forests of Kyoto, Japan presents a captivating narrative that unfolds with every discovery, promising a journey that is both intellectually stimulating and visually breathtaking. The sheer diversity within Japan ensures that no two trips are alike. Tokyo, a sprawling metropolis, pulsates with an energy that is both exhilarating and overwhelming, offering endless opportunities for exploration in its distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character and charm. In contrast, Kyoto, the former imperial capital, whispers tales of samurai and geisha, its ancient temples, meticulously raked gardens, and traditional tea houses providing a serene counterpoint to Tokyo's dynamism. Choosing between these iconic cities, or venturing beyond, fundamentally shapes the rhythm and focus of your Japanese adventure. For international travellers, Japan offers a compelling value proposition, especially when considering the quality of its infrastructure and services. With starting prices around USD 89.15 per night, it presents an accessible gateway to a rich cultural landscape. The emphasis on arts and culture, coupled with breathtaking natural scenery and majestic mountains, means that even budget-conscious travellers from India can find deeply rewarding experiences. This blend of affordability and high-quality cultural immersion makes Japan a standout destination for discerning global explorers. The accommodation landscape in Japan mirrors its multifaceted appeal. For those seeking unparalleled luxury, properties like The Prince Gallery Tokyo Kioicho, a Luxury Collection Hotel, offer breathtaking city views and impeccable service, reflecting the high standards expected by discerning guests. On the other hand, destinations like Osaka, with hotels such as the Waldorf Astoria Osaka, provide a sophisticated urban experience that appeals to a broad range of international visitors. These examples highlight the spectrum of quality and style available, ensuring that travellers can find the perfect base to book hotel stays that match their expectations. Ultimately, Japan caters to a diverse array of global travellers. American adventurers are drawn to its unique blend of urban exploration and natural wonders, from hiking Mount Fuji to navigating Tokyo's vibrant districts. European cultural enthusiasts find a deep connection with Japan's rich history, art, and refined aesthetics, particularly in cities like Kyoto. Indian families often seek value and memorable experiences, appreciating the country's safety and efficient transport, while travellers from Africa may find Japan an intriguing destination for its technological prowess and distinct cultural identity, often seeking efficient travel routes and comfortable stays.

Best Areas to Stay in Japan

Japan's allure lies not just in its iconic landmarks but in the distinct character of its regions, each offering a unique flavour of Japanese life. For international visitors, selecting the right base is paramount, as it dictates the pace of your journey, the accessibility of attractions, and the overall immersion into the local culture. From the electrifying energy of its capital to the serene beauty of its natural landscapes, Japan provides a diverse range of settings to suit every travel style and preference.

Tokyo

Tokyo is a city that defies easy categorization, a pulsating metropolis where futuristic skyscrapers stand alongside ancient temples and tranquil gardens. For travellers from the United States, its sheer scale and endless entertainment options, from world-class dining to cutting-edge fashion, offer an exhilarating urban adventure. European visitors will appreciate the city's sophisticated cultural scene, its museums, galleries, and the meticulous attention to detail found in everything from its public transport to its culinary offerings. Indian families will find Tokyo remarkably safe and efficient, with plenty of family-friendly attractions. Use Traveloka to book attractions — book attractions.

Arriving in Tokyo typically means landing at Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) International Airport, both well-connected to the city centre via express trains and limousines. From London, flights to Tokyo often involve a single stop and take around 12-14 hours. New York travellers can expect similar durations, while direct flights from Mumbai or Nairobi are less common, usually requiring a layover in a major Asian or Middle Eastern hub. Once in Tokyo, the extensive subway and train network makes exploring its diverse districts straightforward, and booking attractions like the Ghibli Museum or a sumo wrestling match is highly recommended. Use Traveloka to book your hotel — book hotel.

Kyoto

Kyoto, the former imperial capital, offers a profound glimpse into Japan's rich history and traditional arts. Its atmosphere is one of serene elegance, characterized by ancient temples, meticulously manicured gardens, and the elusive charm of geisha districts. European travellers, in particular, are drawn to Kyoto's cultural depth, seeking to immerse themselves in its centuries-old traditions and artistic heritage. For visitors from India, Kyoto provides a tranquil contrast to bustling cities, offering a spiritual and aesthetically pleasing experience, while American travellers can find a captivating blend of history and natural beauty.

Accessing Kyoto primarily involves flying into Kansai International Airport (KIX) near Osaka, followed by a direct train journey (Haruka Express) of about 75 minutes. This airport is well-served by connections from major European hubs like Frankfurt and Amsterdam, with flight times around 13-15 hours. For travellers from India, a layover in cities like Singapore or Seoul is common, extending the journey. African travellers from Nairobi or Johannesburg will likely face longer travel times with multiple stops. Once in Kyoto, the city is best explored by bus and subway, and booking a traditional tea ceremony or a guided tour of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is a must.

Osaka

Osaka is renowned as Japan's kitchen, a city that celebrates food with an infectious energy and a down-to-earth spirit. Its atmosphere is lively and welcoming, with a distinct focus on culinary delights and vibrant nightlife. For travellers from India, Osaka's reputation for delicious and accessible food, coupled with its friendly locals, makes it a highly appealing destination. American and European visitors will find Osaka a more relaxed and perhaps more approachable urban experience than Tokyo, offering a fantastic introduction to Japanese city life with a strong emphasis on gastronomy and entertainment.

Osaka is served by Kansai International Airport (KIX), making it easily accessible for international arrivals, often with convenient connections from major hubs in the US and Europe. Flight times are comparable to Kyoto, with layovers typically required for travellers from India and Africa. Within the city, Osaka boasts an excellent public transport system, including subways and JR lines, making it easy to navigate. Popular areas like Dotonbori and Shinsekai are easily reachable. Visitors should consider booking attractions such as Universal Studios Japan or a culinary tour to fully experience the city's offerings.

Niseko (Hokkaido)

Niseko, located on the northern island of Hokkaido, is globally celebrated for its exceptional powder snow and world-class ski resorts, transforming into a stunning natural playground in the summer months. This destination appeals strongly to adventure-seeking travellers from the United States and Europe who are drawn to its outdoor pursuits, whether it's skiing, snowboarding, hiking, or enjoying the natural hot springs (onsen). For those looking for a different pace from Japan's bustling cities, Niseko offers a refreshing escape into nature, with a growing international community and amenities catering to a global clientele.

Reaching Niseko typically involves flying into New Chitose Airport (CTS) near Sapporo, Hokkaido's capital. From major international hubs in the US and Europe, this will involve at least one stop, with total travel time often exceeding 15 hours. Travellers from India and Africa will face longer journeys with multiple layovers. From CTS, Niseko is accessible via bus or train, a journey of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. While Niseko is primarily known for its winter sports, booking activities like guided hiking tours or exploring the local onsen are popular year-round attractions.

Hakone (Near Tokyo)

Hakone, a mountain resort town set in the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, offers a serene escape with stunning natural beauty, hot springs, and art museums, all within easy reach of Tokyo. It's an ideal destination for travellers from all source markets seeking a blend of relaxation and cultural enrichment, particularly those who appreciate scenic landscapes and art. European visitors often find Hakone's natural beauty and artistic offerings appealing, while American travellers can enjoy it as a refreshing break from the urban intensity of Tokyo. Indian travellers might appreciate its tranquil environment and the chance to experience Japan's natural side.

Hakone is most conveniently accessed from Tokyo. Travellers can take a Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo Station to Odawara, then transfer to local trains or buses into Hakone. This journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. For international visitors arriving at Narita or Haneda, reaching Tokyo first is necessary. Flight connections from major US and European cities to Tokyo are frequent. While Hakone is a destination in itself, booking a cruise on Lake Ashi or visiting the Hakone Open-Air Museum are popular activities that showcase its unique charm and natural setting.

Food & Dining

Japan's culinary landscape is a profound expression of its culture, a meticulously crafted art form that delights the senses and offers a journey of discovery for every palate. From the delicate balance of flavours in sushi and sashimi to the comforting warmth of ramen and udon, the country's dishes are celebrated globally for their freshness, seasonality, and exquisite presentation. Exploring Japanese cuisine is an integral part of any visit, providing a delicious lens through which to understand the nation's heritage and regional diversity. The most iconic dishes that define Japanese gastronomy include sushi and sashimi, showcasing the pristine quality of seafood, often served with wasabi and soy sauce. Ramen, a hearty noodle soup with various regional broths and toppings, offers a comforting and flavourful experience. Tempura, lightly battered and deep-fried seafood and vegetables, highlights delicate textures. For those seeking traditional flavours, donburi (rice bowls topped with various ingredients) and yakitori (grilled skewers) are widely popular. Sake, a rice wine, and green tea are classic beverages that complement these culinary delights. For Muslim travellers from India and Africa, navigating Japan's food scene requires some awareness. While dedicated Halal restaurants are growing in number, especially in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, they are not as ubiquitous as in some other destinations. Many restaurants offer vegetarian or pescatarian options, and some may be willing to accommodate specific dietary needs if informed in advance. It is advisable to look for establishments with Halal certifications or those in areas known to cater to Muslim visitors, such as parts of Tokyo. Markets like Tsukiji Outer Market in Tokyo offer fresh produce and seafood, but careful inquiry is needed regarding preparation methods. Japan's culinary identity is deeply regional, with each area boasting its own specialties and variations on national dishes. Hokkaido is famous for its fresh seafood, particularly crab and sea urchin, as well as its rich miso ramen. Osaka, known as "Japan's Kitchen," excels in street food like takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes). Kyoto offers refined kaiseki (multi-course haute cuisine) and delicate tofu dishes. Further afield, regions like Kyushu are known for their tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen, showcasing the diverse gastronomic map of the country. Dining in Japan is an experience governed by subtle customs. Tipping is not customary and can even be considered impolite. Meal times are generally consistent, with lunch typically between 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM, and dinner from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Prices for a casual meal can range from USD 10-20, while a more elaborate dining experience can cost USD 50-100 or more. Ordering often involves pointing at menus, using picture menus, or relying on the helpfulness of restaurant staff. For travellers from the US and Europe, the emphasis on presentation and the quiet respect in dining establishments might be notable, while Indian travellers may find the portion sizes different from what they are accustomed to.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Navigating the social landscape of Japan is an enriching part of the travel experience, and understanding local customs can significantly enhance your interactions and overall comfort. While Japanese society is generally very welcoming to international visitors, a few key etiquette points can help ensure smooth and respectful engagement. These norms often stem from a deep-seated cultural emphasis on harmony, consideration for others, and meticulous attention to detail, which are evident in various aspects of daily life. One of the most striking aspects of Japanese etiquette for international visitors is the emphasis on politeness and indirect communication. Direct confrontation is generally avoided, and people often use subtle cues and polite language to convey their intentions. For instance, when entering someone's home or certain traditional establishments, removing shoes is a common practice. Similarly, the use of public spaces, from trains to restaurants, is characterized by a quiet consideration for others, with loud conversations or phone calls typically discouraged, a practice that may differ from the more boisterous public interactions common in parts of the US or India. When visiting popular landmarks in Tokyo and Kyoto, such as Senso-ji Temple or Fushimi Inari Shrine, respecting religious and cultural protocols is important. Dress modestly, especially when entering sacred sites, and be mindful of photography rules, which are often posted. In commercial areas, queueing is orderly, and personal space is generally respected. For travellers from Africa, the emphasis on punctuality and adherence to schedules in public transport and appointments might be a familiar concept, while the general quietude in public spaces could be a notable difference. Japan is renowned for its exceptionally low crime rates, making it one of the safest travel destinations globally. Visitors can generally feel secure carrying valuables, though standard precautions are always advisable. Ride-hailing apps like Uber operate in major cities, but local taxi services are abundant and reliable. For connectivity, purchasing a local SIM card or pocket Wi-Fi device is highly recommended for easy navigation and communication. Emergency services are efficient, and travellers should note the national emergency number is 110 for police and 119 for fire and ambulance. In case of emergencies, travellers should know the contact details for their respective embassies. For US citizens, the US Embassy in Tokyo and Consulates in Osaka and Naha are key contacts. European travellers can reach out to their national embassies in Japan. Indian citizens can contact the Embassy of India in Tokyo or its consulates. For African travellers, key contacts include the High Commission of Nigeria, the Embassy of Kenya, and the Embassy of South Africa, all located in Tokyo. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly advised for all international visitors to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or incidents.

Travel Guide

Reaching Japan from its key international source markets involves understanding flight routes, durations, and connectivity options. For travellers from the United States, direct flights are available from major hubs like Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), New York (JFK), and Chicago (ORD) to Tokyo (NRT/HND), typically taking 10-13 hours. European travellers from London Heathrow (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), or Amsterdam (AMS) can find direct flights to Tokyo, with journey times around 11-13 hours, though many will opt for a single stopover. Indian travellers from Mumbai (BOM) or Delhi (DEL) will usually require a layover, often in Southeast Asia or the Middle East, with total travel time ranging from 14-18 hours. For travellers from Africa, flights from Nairobi (NBO), Lagos (LOS), or Johannesburg (JNB) to Japan invariably involve multiple stops, with total travel times often exceeding 20 hours, making it crucial to book flight options well in advance. Navigating Japan once you arrive is remarkably efficient, thanks to its world-class public transportation system. The Shinkansen, or bullet train, network connects major cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka swiftly and comfortably, with journey times between Tokyo and Kyoto being around 2.5 hours. Domestic flights are also available for longer distances, such as travelling to Hokkaido or Okinawa. Within cities, extensive subway and bus networks make local travel straightforward and affordable. For international itineraries, purchasing a Japan Rail Pass can offer significant savings if you plan extensive intercity travel. The best time to visit Japan often depends on personal preferences and the type of experience sought. Spring (March to May) brings cherry blossoms and pleasant weather, making it a peak season, especially for travellers from the US and Europe. Autumn (September to November) offers vibrant fall foliage and comfortable temperatures, also a popular period. Summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, with a higher chance of typhoons, while winter (December to February) is ideal for snow sports in Hokkaido and offers fewer crowds in major cities. School holidays in India often coincide with peak seasons, so booking well in advance is recommended for these periods. Before embarking on your Japanese adventure, a few pre-departure preparations are essential for international visitors. The currency is the Japanese Yen (JPY), and while credit cards are increasingly accepted, carrying some cash is advisable, especially for smaller establishments or rural areas. Purchasing a local SIM card or renting a pocket Wi-Fi device upon arrival is highly recommended for seamless navigation and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps for transit, and translation apps can be invaluable. Beyond your passport, ensure you have copies of important documents and consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations.

Visa Information

Entry requirements for Japan vary significantly based on nationality, and it is crucial for all international travellers to verify the latest regulations before their trip. For citizens of the United States, visa-free entry is typically granted for stays of up to 90 days for tourism and business purposes, allowing for straightforward travel planning. European passport holders, including those from the UK, Germany, and France, also generally benefit from visa-free entry for short stays, usually up to 90 days within a 180-day period, simplifying their travel arrangements considerably. Indian passport holders typically require a visa to enter Japan for tourism or business. While there are provisions for visa-free entry under specific circumstances, such as holding a diplomatic or official passport, most tourists will need to apply for a visa in advance through the Japanese embassy or consulate in their country. This process often involves submitting an application form, passport photos, proof of sufficient funds, and a detailed itinerary. Similarly, travellers from many African nations, including Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, will also generally need to obtain a visa prior to travel, with application procedures and required documentation potentially being more extensive and subject to stricter scrutiny. The application process for a Japanese visa can involve submitting documents such as a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity (usually at least six months beyond the intended stay), completed visa application forms, recent passport-sized photographs, and supporting documents like flight reservations and hotel bookings. Proof of onward travel is often required. While visa processing times can vary, it is advisable for Indian and African travellers to apply several weeks in advance to allow ample time for assessment. It is imperative for all travellers to consult the official website of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate for the most current and accurate visa information pertaining to their specific nationality.

I had such a nice stay here! The room was comfy, everything was clean, and the staff were super sweet. Plus, the location is convenient—easy to get around and close to everything I needed. There is one big supermarket nearby as well (about 150 meters away from the hotel) Would happily come back again!
