Air Canada's predecessor, Trans Canada Airlines or TCA was formed by federal government legislation on April 10, 1937 to connect the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. TCA inaugurated its first flight on September 1 with a flight distance of 50 minutes carrying two passengers. By 1938 TCA hired its first flight attendant and by January 1940 the airline had 500 employees. Canadian Pacific Airlines in 1942 asked for TCA to be merged but the Prime Minister refused and declared that TCA would be the only airline providing transcontinental flights. It wasn't until 1964 that TCA grew into a national airline and changed its name to Air Canada.
