Founded in 1980 by Bernd Walter, owner of a flight school at Dortmund Airport, Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (LGW) initially offered charter and air taxi services on demand. In the 1990s, the airline evolved into a scheduled domestic flight network with their largest fleet at the time, the Dornier 228, capable of carrying 19 passengers.

In 2007, LGW began a partnership with Air Berlin, the second largest airline in Germany at the time. LGW then discontinued their independent corporate identity and began operating scheduled flights on behalf of Air Berlin. In 2017, Lufthansa purchased LGW as part of Air Berlin's bankruptcy proceedings. LGW was then sold to Vietfracht Group in 2019 and rebranded as German Airways.
