Great Wall Airlines History

On June 1, 2006, the airline started its inaugural Shanghai-Amsterdam flight with six flights per week, becoming the first in a local-foreign partnership in China. Owned by China Eastern Airlines (51%), Singapore Airlines Cargo (25%), and Dahlia Investments (24%), a subsidiary of Temasek Holdings.

Its operations were suspended on August 18, 2006 due to US Treasury Department sanctions against its parent, China Great Wall Industry, for allegedly supplying technology to Iran. Sanctions were lifted on December 13, 2006, and services were rescheduled from February 2007 to Amsterdam, Incheon, Mumbai/Chennai, and Manchester via Amsterdam.

Operated flights to the US including Seattle and Chicago in May 2008, and Atlanta in 2009. In the first half of 2011, it merged with China Cargo Airlines, alongside Shanghai Airlines Cargo. Before 2002, there was a small airline called Great Wall Airlines in Ningbo, bought by China Eastern Airlines in May 2001.
