The hotel was going through some changes as they had stated well in advance. Staff were very helpful, rooms were as pleasant as they have been in the past with a new lick of paint in places around the hotel. The room was plenty big enough for our family of 4 and would stay again. NCP car park is just next door so easy to park and go straight in. Great location next to the castle too

Once we actually managed to locate the hotel everything was fine. Nice room and very quiet hotel with friendly staff. Problem was finding it! The only building we could find with St James on it was closed up. Eventually we realised from searching Google photos that the hotel was across the street with a new name on it! They were in the middle of rebranding to a Marriot hotel! Advance warning of this would have been useful both to us and the three other parties we assisted during our stay. Poor communication. Having said that I’d be happy to stay again as it was a reasonable price and in a good location.

We stayed for a graduation & it was an ideal pick. Whilst they are having some refurbishments, this did not affect our stay. Modern, clean, great location and the staff were really helpful. Assisted with ordering some flowers for the graduation and they went above and beyond. Would definitely recommend.

So this has recently been acquired by Sheraton and still work to be done... Lifts need to be replaced as old and don't seem safe, noisy and rickety... Rooms ok, lighting is confusing as you don't have full control whilst in bed and TV brackets look like the could fall off wall. No hotel information in room, either paper or TV driven. Only real gripe was we had half a toilet roll in our room and it looked like the Andrew puppy had it and it was rolled back up...why not a full roll? Staff seemed pleasant enough .... Breakfast was Fantastic! Had to park in local NCP £16 for 24 hours...which we all know in the UK is never a pleasant experience walking through.

The reception / bar/ cafe area were undergoing renovation. It was like a bomb site. This was not reflected in the room price which is disappointing!!!! Please do better. Work outside also started early in the morning which also added to the not good feeling.
