This railway is in the management of the 5 Purwokerto Operational Area to serve Purworejo-Jakarta route through the corridors of Kutoarjo Station and Pasar Senen Station.
In one trip, KA Sawunggalih will travel a distance of 450 km with an average speed of 50-100 km/hour. Thus, the journey will take approximately 7-8 hours. Along the way, the number of Sawunggalih KA station stops are at least nine, namely Pasar Senen Station, Cirebon Station, Bumiayu Station, Purwokerto Station, Kroya Station, Gombong Station, Karanganyar Station, Kebumen Station, and Kutoarjo Station.
KA Sawunggalih provides trips twice a day, with the arrival-departure to Kutoarjo Station available at 07.00 and 19.00. Instead, departures from Pasar Senen Station are available at 08.15 and 18.30. Meanwhile, for KA Sawunggalih Business classes, ticket fares are available with a range of Rp180.000-Rp220.000 per passenger.
Regarding the facility, PT KAI (Persero) pins the facility according to the passenger class. The main facility’s difference lies in the comfort of the seats, where the Executive class has better seats with adjustable settings for passengers’ comfort and more spaces. Public facilities available throughout the classes are air conditioners, TV, toilets, plugs, luggage, and paid-food services.
KA Sawunggalih is a development service of KA Sawunggalih Ekonomi which has been operated since 1977. This train went through another development in 1984 through the launching one unit of Main Business Class Sawunggalih Train. The departure point of KA Sawunggalih from Jakarta was originally through the Jakarta Kota Station (BEOS). Along with the new policy in 2001, all Business class trains, including KA Sawunggalih Utama must depart from Pasar Senen Station. Since then there have been more and more changes. KA Sawunggalih Utama Pagi with the departure point of Jakarta changed its name to Kuto Kutojaya Business, while KA Sawunggalih Utama Night from the same departure point remains to be named KA Sawunggalih Utama. KA Sawunggalih Ekonomi had originally departed from Pasar Senen Station, then moved to Tanah Abang Station. The name was changed into KA Kutojaya EKonomi. Entering 2001, PT KAI (Persero) added the Executive train to the KA Sawunggalih Utama circuit that was previously only provided for Business class. On the other hand, Kuto Kutojaya Bisnis also added Executive class by the end of 2005. Shortly after, KA Kutojaya Business was no longer heard because its name was back to KA Sawunggalih Utama. In 2009, a special Executive Class KA Sawunggalih Pagi from Jakarta and Malam from Kutoarjo were eliminated. Currently, the additional services for Executive class are available only on KA Sawunggalih Malam from Jakarta and KA Sawunggalih Pagi from Kutoarjo.
To serve two trips back every day, KA Sawunggalih uses a different set of railways. The series I is a series of Executive and Business Class trains which are available at KA Sawunggalih Malam from Jakarta and KA Sawunggalih Pagi from Kutoarjo. These mixed classes consist of one CC206 Locomotive, 6-7 AC Business trains, one power station train, 1-2 Executive trains, and one aling-aling train. Meanwhile, circuit II only serves Business Class AC and is available on Sawunggalih Pagi train from Jakarta and KA Sawunggalih Malam from Kutoarjo. This series II consists of a CC206 or CC201 Locomotive, 7-8 AC Business trains, one power station train, and one aling-aling train (a train without passengers).
