Welcome to Maratua Airport

Maratua Airport (RTU) is a small island airport on Maratua, one of the outer islands of the Derawan archipelago in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. For divers and beach lovers, it turns what used to be a long speedboat journey into a flight of under an hour from the mainland.

The airport was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo on 25 October 2018, on the same day as the new APT Pranoto Airport in Samarinda. It is run by Indonesia's Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

Where Maratua Airport Sits on the Island

The airstrip is on Maratua Island itself, so most resorts and homestays are a short drive or boat hop away. Maratua is a narrow, curving atoll-like island, and many guesthouses arrange pickups from the terminal for arriving guests.

Runway and Terminal at Maratua

RTU has a single runway of 1,600 by 30 metres, long enough for ATR 72 turboprops. The terminal is modest, with check-in counters, a boarding area and baggage claim. Flights operate in daylight, so schedules cluster in the morning and early afternoon.

Airlines and Routes Serving Maratua

Flights here are regional and not daily. Wings Air flies an ATR 72 between Maratua and Kalimarau Airport in Berau (Tanjung Redeb) a few times a week. Smaller carriers, including Susi Air, have operated pioneer services to Berau and Samarinda. Routes and days change often, so check the latest schedule before building a trip around a particular flight.

Getting Around After Landing in Maratua

There is no public transport on the island in the usual sense. Resorts and homestays commonly collect guests, and motorbikes can be rented locally. Boats link Maratua with neighbouring islands such as Derawan and Kakaban.

• Diving and snorkelling: the reefs around Maratua are known for turtles, reef sharks and large schools of barracuda.
• Kakaban Lake: on nearby Kakaban Island, a marine lake where you can swim among stingless jellyfish.
