Bintulu Airport is an airport serving Bintulu, a town in the state of Sarawak. The airport is located 5.5 km southwest of the Bintulu town. Although the airport size is small, it is capable to handle planes as large as a Boeing 747. History of Bintulu Airport began when the British colony built an airfield situated between a river at one end and the sea coast at the other end in early 1937.Bintulu old airport was open for operation on 1 September 1955, with a grass-surface runway catering for aircraft operated by Borneo Airways. Bigger types of aircraft were introduced in 1963 and in 1966, the runway was resurfaced with bitumen. The terminal building was also extended to cater for increasing number of passengers. In 1981, the terminal building was extended again. New Bintulu Airport was opened in 2002. In September 2005, AirAsia started operating in Bintulu Airport. On 1 October 2007, MASWings took over the link connecting Bintulu.

Tourist Attractions

Bintulu is the fourth largest town of Sarawak. While staying in Bintulu, one shall find many activities that may suit for free time entertainment. For insights of old traditional way of fishing, people may head out to Kampung Jepak. This is the village of the Fishermans, mostly inhabited by the Melanaus tribe.

The first legislative assembly meeting headed by the second white Rajah of Sarawak was held in Bintulu in 1857. In 1967, a centenary stone was erected to commemorate this event and later in 1987, a clock tower and a fountain were built near it. The whole area is called ‘Council Negri Monument’ and now becoming an attraction for tourists. In November 1998, the fountain was fenced up for safety reasons.

People who would enjoy taking pictures, it would be worthwhile to visit the Tanjung Batu Beach. The main feature of this beach is the fact that it is a rock beach as well as a sandy beach situated side by side.

Do not miss the opportunity to visit the Guest Market or Pasar Tamu. Among the famous catch here is the fresh Umai, a local delicacy made from raw fish being seasoned with lime, salt, chopped onions and spicy small chillies; and the famous Bintulu Shrimp Paste whereby the locals called it by the name ‘Belacan Bintulu’.

Bintulu is also known for the world’s largest LNG complex owned by PETRONAS, the national oil company. People may catch a glimpse of the facilities structure by heading to the Kidurong Tower, a small observation tower at Tanjung Kidurong.
