Perfect location with calming sea view. Extremely comfortable mattress and pillows that forced me to look out for the brand. Towels smell fresh and staff are polite and helpful. AC and water pressure were more than sufficient. They use smart TV with good selection of movies in case you decided to stay in room. Breakfast is limited but taste is above average. In terms of room cleanliness, there's a need for improvement. Balcony area was neglected by housekeeper. I saw at least 2 lizard dropping on the chair and bathtub. A bit dusty around the corner too. Regardless I will come again for the perfect view this place has to offer.

Overview of Lone Pine Hotel Penang

Steeped in heritage and nestled along the golden sands of Batu Ferringhi,

Lone Pine Hotel Penang

stands as one of the island's most storied beachfront retreats. Established in 1948, this 5-star boutique resort holds the distinction of being the very first hotel to open along the Batu Ferringhi coast. Its name traces back to a charming origin story — Australian founder Dr Albert S. McKern spotted a solitary casuarina tree on the property and, mistaking it for a pine, christened the estate "Lone Pine." That endearing character has defined the hotel ever since, and today the property operates as part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio collection, blending colonial-era elegance with thoroughly modern comforts.

With just 90 rooms,

Lone Pine Penang

is the most intimate luxury hotel on Batu Ferringhi's famous beachfront strip. Every detail of the resort has been thoughtfully restored during its most recent renovation, preserving the heritage architecture and lush tropical gardens that have drawn visitors for decades while introducing contemporary furnishings, refreshed dining concepts, and upgraded wellness facilities. The result is a boutique experience that feels both nostalgic and effortlessly current — a place where century-old casuarina trees frame views of the Andaman Sea and where al fresco breakfasts unfold by a sparkling pool just steps from the sand.

What truly sets Lone Pine Hotel Penang apart is its atmosphere. Unlike the larger resort towers that line the Batu Ferringhi coast, Lone Pine maintains a tranquil, residential feel. Guests frequently remark on the personalised service, the unhurried pace, and the way the property's low-rise design allows nature — swaying palms, birdsong, the sound of waves — to take centre stage. Whether you are seeking a romantic beach getaway, a family holiday with genuine character, or a base from which to explore Penang's legendary food scene and cultural landmarks, this boutique resort delivers an experience that is difficult to replicate elsewhere on the island.

Room Types at Lone Pine Hotel Penang

All accommodation at Lone Pine Hotel Penang faces the sea or the resort's verdant tropical gardens, ensuring every guest wakes to a sense of place that is unmistakably coastal Penang. Rooms are fitted with individually adjustable air conditioning, complimentary high-speed WiFi, flat-screen televisions with satellite channels, an in-room safe, a minibar, and tea and coffee making facilities. The generous proportions of each room — among the largest in Batu Ferringhi — provide a welcome sense of space, while the décor balances colonial heritage touches with clean, contemporary lines.

Deluxe Room

The Deluxe Room at Lone Pine Penang offers a spacious 45 square metres of living space, set on the first floor above the heritage wing. Guests enjoy a partial sea view framed by the resort's beautiful heritage trees, creating a serene and leafy outlook. Each Deluxe Room features a private balcony appointed with a plunge bath and a comfortable daybed — an ideal spot for morning coffee or an afternoon read with the sea breeze drifting in. Inside, the room is elegantly appointed with either a king-sized bed or twin beds, premium bed linens, and a well-designed bathroom with rain shower. The Deluxe Room is perfectly suited for couples or solo travellers who appreciate generous space without the premium of a full suite, and it comfortably accommodates up to two adults and one child.

Sea View Room

For guests who wish to place the Andaman Sea at the very centre of their stay, the Sea View Room is the natural choice. Also measuring a generous 45 square metres, this colonial-styled room looks directly out over the garden and beach through the majestic canopy of century-old casuarina trees — a view that is quintessentially Lone Pine Penang. The private balcony is furnished with a plunge bath and daybed, allowing guests to soak in the panorama in complete privacy. Inside, the room mirrors the refined appointments of the Deluxe category, with a king or twin bed configuration, satellite television, minibar, and luxurious bathroom amenities. The Sea View Room accommodates up to two adults and one child, and is especially popular with honeymooners and couples celebrating special occasions who want uninterrupted sightlines to the sea.

Pool Suite

The Pool Suite elevates the Lone Pine Hotel Penang experience with additional space and exclusivity. Measuring from approximately 55 square metres, this suite category features a separate living area with a large daybed, making it an excellent option for families or guests who desire more room to spread out. The defining feature of the Pool Suite is its direct access to or proximity to the resort's swimming pool, marrying indoor luxury with effortless outdoor living. Expect the same refined colonial-contemporary interiors found throughout the property, enhanced with premium touches such as upgraded bathroom amenities, a more expansive balcony, and carefully curated artwork. The Pool Suite accommodates up to two adults and two children comfortably, and its layout provides a genuine sense of separation between sleeping and lounging areas.

Garden Suite

The Garden Suite at Lone Pine Penang is designed for guests who appreciate tranquillity and a connection to the resort's lush tropical surroundings. This suite opens onto the property's beautifully maintained gardens, offering a private courtyard or terrace that leads out into the placid greenery. With a generous floor plan that includes a separate living space, the Garden Suite provides ample room for families and longer-staying guests. The interiors are warmly furnished with natural materials and heritage-inspired design elements, complemented by all the modern conveniences expected of a 5-star resort — from high-speed WiFi and premium entertainment systems to a well-appointed bathroom and minibar. The Garden Suite is ideal for travellers who prefer a quieter setting away from the beachfront buzz while still being just a short stroll from the pool and the sand.

Facilities and Amenities

Despite its boutique proportions, Lone Pine Hotel Penang offers a comprehensive suite of facilities that rival much larger resorts. The centrepiece is the

outdoor swimming pool

, a beautifully landscaped infinity-edge pool set amidst the tropical gardens and just metres from the beach. Sun loungers line the pool deck, and attentive staff are on hand to arrange towels, drinks, and light bites throughout the day. Guests also enjoy

direct beach access

to Batu Ferringhi's sandy shoreline, where water sports and evening strolls are a way of life.

The

Pure Energy Spa

provides a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. Offering a menu of massage therapies, body treatments, and facials, the spa draws on both traditional Asian wellness practices and modern techniques. Whether you opt for a deep tissue massage after a day of sightseeing or a couples' treatment to mark a special occasion, the spa's skilled therapists ensure a restorative experience. For those who prefer an active start to the day, the

fitness centre

is equipped with modern cardio and strength-training equipment and is available to all guests.

Additional facilities include a

games room

with pool tables and board games — a welcome feature for families and rainy afternoons — as well as a dedicated

children's recreation area

. The resort provides

complimentary WiFi

throughout the property and

free on-site parking

, removing two common pain points for travellers. A

24-hour front desk

offers concierge services, currency exchange, and tour arrangement assistance, while a

limousine service

is available for airport transfers and excursions. For corporate guests, the hotel features a boardroom-style

meeting room

suitable for intimate business gatherings and private events.

Location and Getting There

Lone Pine Hotel Penang occupies a prime position at 97 Batu Ferringhi, along the northern coast of Penang Island. Batu Ferringhi is the island's most celebrated beach destination, renowned for its long stretch of golden sand, vibrant night market, and a cluster of upscale resorts — yet Lone Pine's boutique scale and heritage gardens set it apart from its neighbours.

From

Penang International Airport (PEN)

, the hotel is approximately 33 kilometres away, which translates to a drive of around 45 minutes to one hour depending on traffic conditions. A taxi or e-hailing ride from the airport is the most convenient option, with fares starting from approximately RM 70 to RM 90. Alternatively, guests can arrange the hotel's private limousine transfer for a more seamless arrival experience. From

George Town

, the UNESCO-listed capital city, Lone Pine is roughly 15 kilometres northwest — a scenic 30-minute drive along the coastal road that passes through Tanjung Bungah.

The surrounding area is rich with attractions.

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm

and the

Tropical Spice Garden

are both within a short drive and make for excellent half-day outings. The

ESCAPE Theme Park

, popular with families and adventure seekers, lies within six kilometres of the hotel. The lively

Batu Ferringhi Night Market

, where you can browse local handicrafts, souvenirs, and street food, is just a brief walk or ride from the resort. For cultural exploration, the

George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site

,

Penang Hill

, and

Kek Lok Si Temple

are all easily accessible as day trips, and the hotel's concierge team can arrange transport and guided tours upon request.

Dining at Lone Pine Hotel Penang

The Bungalow

is the resort's signature all-day dining restaurant, and it captures the spirit of Lone Pine Penang beautifully. Guests can choose between the air-conditioned interior or al fresco seating by the pool, with views extending towards the casuarina-shaded gardens and the sea beyond. Breakfast is served as a generous international buffet from 6.30 am to 10.30 am, featuring a wide selection that spans Western favourites, Asian staples, fresh tropical fruits, and local Penang specialities. From 11.00 am through to 11.00 pm, The Bungalow transitions into an all-day menu that blends colonial-inspired cuisine — think steaks, burgers, and pasta — with beloved local dishes such as Penang wok-fried noodles, laksa, and char kway teow. The restaurant's seafood offerings are also noteworthy, with a selection that has included items such as fresh oysters, smoked salmon, and tuna.

BatuBar

is the hotel's beachfront bar and one of the most atmospheric spots along the Batu Ferringhi coast. Positioned to capture sweeping views of the Andaman Sea, it is the place to be at sunset, when the sky transforms into shades of amber and violet over the Strait of Malacca. The drinks menu features expertly crafted cocktails, mocktails, local beers, and a curated wine list. Light snacks and bar bites are available to accompany the drinks, making BatuBar equally suited to a pre-dinner aperitif or a leisurely evening session.

The Dispensary

rounds out the dining and drinking experience with a distinctive heritage whiskey bar concept. Set in a colonial-inspired interior, this intimate venue showcases a carefully selected collection of fine whiskeys from around the world. It is a refined retreat for after-dinner drinks or a nightcap, and its unique theming — drawn from the building's historical character — adds a layer of storytelling that guests find genuinely memorable.

Beyond the resort, Batu Ferringhi and greater Penang offer a staggering array of dining options. The nearby night market serves up affordable and delicious local street food, while George Town — widely regarded as one of Asia's greatest food cities — is just a 30-minute drive away, offering everything from Michelin-recognised hawker stalls to fine-dining restaurants.

Why Stay at Lone Pine Hotel Penang

Unmatched heritage and character.

Few hotels in Penang can claim a history stretching back to 1948. Lone Pine Penang is not merely a place to sleep — it is a destination with a story, where colonial architecture, century-old trees, and decades of hospitality tradition create an atmosphere that modern builds simply cannot replicate. Staying here means becoming part of that legacy.

Boutique intimacy on a world-class beach.

With only 90 rooms, Lone Pine Hotel Penang offers a level of personalised attention and quietude that the larger Batu Ferringhi resorts cannot match. The staff-to-guest ratio is notably generous, and the low-rise design ensures the property never feels crowded, even during peak season. You are steps from one of Malaysia's most famous beaches without the resort-tower experience.

Rooms that genuinely impress.

At 45 square metres and above, the rooms at Lone Pine are among the most spacious in the Batu Ferringhi area. The inclusion of private balconies with plunge baths and daybeds in most room categories elevates the accommodation well beyond what travellers typically expect, turning an ordinary hotel stay into a genuinely indulgent retreat.

A food lover's base camp.

Between The Bungalow's accomplished all-day menu, BatuBar's sunset cocktails, and The Dispensary's curated whiskey collection, on-site dining alone is a highlight. Factor in the hotel's proximity to Penang's legendary hawker culture and George Town's thriving restaurant scene, and Lone Pine becomes an unbeatable base for culinary exploration.

Marriott Bonvoy benefits.

As a Tribute Portfolio property under Marriott International, Lone Pine Hotel Penang allows Marriott Bonvoy members to earn and redeem points, enjoy elite status benefits, and access member-exclusive rates. For frequent travellers enrolled in the loyalty programme, this adds a compelling layer of value to an already exceptional property.

Tips for Booking Lone Pine Hotel Penang

Book early for peak periods.

Lone Pine Penang is a small hotel with a devoted following, which means it can fill up quickly during Malaysian school holidays, festive periods such as Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, and the peak European travel season from November through February. If your travel dates fall within these windows, booking at least four to six weeks in advance is strongly recommended to secure your preferred room type, particularly the suites which are limited in number.

Consider midweek stays for better value.

Like most beach resorts in Penang, Lone Pine Hotel Penang tends to see higher demand — and pricing — over weekends, when domestic travellers from Kuala Lumpur and other cities head to the coast. A Sunday-through-Thursday stay often unlocks more favourable rates and a quieter atmosphere by the pool and at the restaurants.

Request a higher floor for sea views.

If you are booking a Deluxe Room and sea views are important to you, it is worth noting your preference for a higher-floor assignment when making your reservation. While all rooms face the sea or gardens, the vantage point from upper floors provides more expansive panoramas above the tree canopy. Requests can be made through Traveloka's special requests feature or by contacting the hotel directly after booking.

Check in on Traveloka for promotional rates.

Lone Pine Penang frequently features in Traveloka's seasonal promotions and flash sales, which can offer meaningful savings compared to standard rates. Activating price alerts for your desired dates ensures you are notified the moment a deal becomes available. Combining a Traveloka promotion with a flexible cancellation policy provides both value and peace of mind.

Make the most of the resort's complimentary extras.

Free WiFi and free parking are included for all guests — a genuine saving given that many Batu Ferringhi hotels charge separately for parking. The concierge desk can also arrange complimentary local area recommendations and help coordinate transport to nearby attractions, so do take advantage of their knowledge to build an itinerary that suits your interests. For a seamless arrival, consider pre-arranging the hotel's limousine transfer from Penang International Airport, especially if you are landing late in the evening when taxi queues can be longer.

Charming mid-size hotel exuding colonial architectural character. The hotel feels like coming home with the calm ambience. The hotel was excellent all round and nicely located on BTU Ferrenghi. Small touches like balcony bathtub were nice surprise. I would say that some parts of my room need minor maintenance (better cleaning of limescale and one of the sink taps wasn’t working). I would definitely come back to this property for another relaxing stay. Thank you.

There were great things about the hotel so I’ll focus on the two things that really meant something to us but the hotel fell short on these: some gym equipment were out of order and we really wanted to use them. There was no draught beer until our last night !! They had bottled beer. Would’ve been nice to chill out with some beers on tap in the late afternoons. We also thought that the hotel was advertised as a kid-free resort which was quite an important point for us but there children around although they were mostly well-behaved (so phew !!). There were a couple of young Instagram posers setting up their shots but they were mostly just cringey to watch so that was quite fun. Other than that, the pool, breakfasts and rooms were really ace. The hotel staff were all really nice and polite.

Lone pine is a nice place to stay for a quiet vacation, some extra pool chairs wouldn’t go astray… the room had a very mouldy smell due to humidity and constant air conditioning and they tried to help with a different room but they were all the same - they could try cleaning the air con filters… breaky was good, staff were nice but limited English… they had lots of meetings and a wedding while we were there which was a slight inconvenience but, when you pay for a boutique hotel you expect a bit more… they strangely locked the gates onto the beach - one night all of them were locked…. While breaky was ok and there pool/bar menu adequate there is no restaurant at this hotel which means you have to go out for dinner…

Returned for another stay at Lone Pine as we enjoyed our previous one with family. Overall great as before and we requested for the highest floor this time. Prefer the view and quietness on the 1st floor

OMG one of the best hotel we ever stayed in . We have been to over 30 counties and I can say that Lone Pine would be in our top 5 . All the staff and I mean all the staff always had a smile for me and my second wife . I just wish we could have stayed longer than 6 nights . I am really really going miss this hotel and I know we will be back sooner than later . Again thank you so much to all at the Lone Pine . Stay safe and well and we shall see each other again .

Thank you.

Excellent service!! They catered to all my special requests. Food is delish and reasonably priced! And the hotel rooms are a lovely colonial charm! However the beach infront hotel is not a private beach.

We had a really nice two days at the Resort, the staff were really friendly and welcoming and the location was beautiful. While the Hotel was older, the recent renovation made it feel new and clean.
