The staff was good, even at peak check-in time (3 pm). I also got the requested preference of the room. Easy to buy drinking water too, as there is a convenience store in the building. I can also wash clothes as there is a washing machine available. Always stay here when I go to Gleneagles Hospital, as it's only next to it. Thank you for the overall good service.

More about hotels in Malaysia

Malaysia: A Tapestry of Flavors, History, and Natural Wonders for Filipino Explorers

For travellers from the Philippines, Malaysia presents a captivating blend of the familiar and the exotic, a destination that feels both accessible and thrillingly new. It’s a place where the aroma of spices from bustling street food stalls mingles with the scent of ancient rainforests, and where colonial architecture stands proudly beside gleaming modern skyscrapers. This rich cultural mosaic, influenced by Malay, Chinese, and Indian heritage, offers a sensory journey that resonates deeply, promising discoveries that cater to every palate and curiosity, from the historical echoes in its old towns to the serene beauty of its natural landscapes.

The true magic of Malaysia lies in its remarkable diversity, offering distinct experiences across its varied regions. A trip to the dynamic capital, Kuala Lumpur, provides a stark contrast to the UNESCO-listed heritage streets of Georgetown in Pulau Pinang, or the vibrant energy of Johor Bahru, a gateway to southern Malaysia. Even within Selangor, you can find a spectrum of experiences, from urban exploration to tranquil retreats. This geographical and cultural richness means that each visit can be a completely new adventure, tailored to your specific interests, whether you seek urban excitement, historical immersion, or natural serenity.

Understanding the value proposition is key for any traveller, and Malaysia offers exceptional value, especially for those coming from the Philippines. With an average price starting from just ₱ 1,230.48 per night and an impressive overall review score of 8.1 from over 1.8 million guest experiences, the country consistently delivers quality accommodation and memorable stays without demanding an exorbitant budget. This high rating, derived from a vast number of real guest opinions, signals a reliable standard of service and facilities across a wide range of properties, making it a smart choice for budget-conscious yet discerning travellers.

Consider the allure of Kuala Lumpur's iconic Petronas Twin Towers, a symbol of Malaysia's modern ambition and architectural prowess. These magnificent structures are more than just a landmark; they represent the nation's forward-looking spirit and its ability to blend cutting-edge design with cultural significance.

Standing beneath them, especially as they illuminate the night sky, offers a profound sense of awe and a tangible connection to the country's progress. For travellers seeking to experience this blend of modernity and cultural depth, finding the right place to stay is the first step towards a fulfilling journey, and you can easily book hotel accommodations that place you close to such marvels.

Malaysia is a destination that warmly welcomes all types of travellers. Families will find ample entertainment and child-friendly resorts, particularly in areas like Johor Bahru. Couples can explore romantic heritage streets in Georgetown or enjoy sophisticated city breaks in Kuala Lumpur. Solo adventurers will appreciate the ease of navigation and the wealth of cultural experiences available. Business travellers, too, will find excellent facilities and convenient locations in major hubs like Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The key is to match your travel style and interests with the unique character of each region, ensuring a trip that perfectly suits your needs.

Best Areas to Stay in Malaysia

Malaysia's diverse geography and rich cultural tapestry mean that where you choose to base yourself will significantly shape your travel experience. From the bustling urban centres to the serene coastal towns and historical enclaves, each region offers a distinct atmosphere and a unique set of attractions. Understanding these differences will help you select the ideal location that aligns with your interests, whether you're a family seeking adventure, a couple looking for a romantic escape, or a solo traveller eager to explore historical sites and culinary delights.

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur, the nation's capital, is a dynamic metropolis that pulsates with energy, offering a thrilling urban adventure for every visitor. It’s a city where towering skyscrapers, including the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, dominate the skyline, yet traditional markets and colonial-era buildings offer glimpses into its rich past. This city is perfect for travellers who thrive on excitement, enjoy world-class shopping, and have a keen interest in diverse culinary scenes. Families will appreciate the numerous attractions, while couples can find sophisticated dining and entertainment options. Solo travellers will find it easy to navigate and packed with cultural immersion opportunities.

From Kuala Lumpur, you can easily access major landmarks like the Batu Caves, a sacred Hindu shrine set within impressive limestone caves, and the historical Merdeka Square. The city is a food lover's destination, with street food stalls serving up delicious Malay, Chinese, and Indian dishes, particularly in areas like Jalan Alor. Kuala Lumpur is well-connected, with direct flights from the Philippines and an efficient public transport system, including the LRT and monorail, making it simple to explore. For those looking to experience the city's highlights, it's easy to book attraction tickets and tours.

Georgetown, Pulau Pinang

Georgetown, the capital of Pulau Pinang, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that enchants visitors with its beautifully preserved colonial architecture, vibrant street art, and a culinary scene that is legendary throughout Southeast Asia. This city offers a more laid-back yet culturally rich experience compared to Kuala Lumpur. It's ideal for travellers who appreciate history, art, and, above all, food. Couples will find its charming streets and artistic flair romantic, while history buffs and food enthusiasts will be in their element exploring its unique heritage and diverse flavours.

Georgetown is renowned for its incredible street food, with dishes like Char Kway Teow, Assam Laksa, and Cendol being absolute must-tries. The city is also famous for its captivating street art, which adorns many of its heritage buildings, inviting exploration on foot. Beyond the city, the tropical beauty of Penang Hill offers panoramic views, and the Kek Lok Si Temple provides a glimpse into Buddhist culture. Getting to Georgetown is straightforward, with flights to Penang International Airport, and within the city, walking and trishaw rides are popular ways to discover its charm.

Johor Bahru

Johor Bahru (JB), located at the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia, serves as a bustling gateway and a destination in its own right, offering a dynamic mix of shopping, entertainment, and family-friendly attractions. It’s a city that appeals strongly to families looking for a fun-filled holiday, with its proximity to theme parks and its reputation as a shopping retreat. For travellers coming from Singapore, it’s a popular day trip or short break destination, but for those from the Philippines, it offers a distinct southern Malaysian experience, blending modern amenities with local culture.

JB is most famous for its proximity to Legoland Malaysia Resort, a major draw for families, and other theme parks like Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and Thomas Town. The city also boasts numerous shopping malls, offering a wide array of retail therapy opportunities. Foodies will find a diverse range of local delicacies, from seafood to traditional Malay dishes. Johor Bahru is easily accessible by road from Singapore and has its own international airport, making it convenient for travellers. Its convenient location also makes it a good base for exploring nearby islands or even venturing into Singapore.

Selangor

Selangor, a state that encircles the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur, offers a diverse range of experiences that complement the capital's urban energy. It’s a region that caters to those seeking a blend of nature, culture, and modern development, often providing a more relaxed pace than the bustling capital. Selangor is well-suited for travellers who want to explore beyond the immediate city centre, perhaps looking for eco-tourism opportunities, historical sites, or family-friendly resorts. It’s a great option for families and travellers who prefer a slightly less intense urban environment while still having easy access to Kuala Lumpur's attractions.

Within Selangor, visitors can explore attractions like the i-City theme park in Shah Alam, known for its dazzling light displays, or the historical Royal Klang Town. For nature lovers, the Kuala Selangor Nature Park offers mangrove forest exploration and firefly watching tours. The state also boasts several large shopping centres and a variety of dining options, from local hawker fare to international cuisine. Selangor is easily accessible via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and has a good network of highways and public transport, making it convenient for exploring its varied offerings.

A Culinary Journey Through Malaysia: Flavors That Delight

Malaysia's culinary landscape is a vibrant testament to its multicultural heritage, a delicious fusion of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences that creates a unique gastronomic identity. For travellers from the Philippines, the sheer variety and depth of flavour are often a delightful surprise. Dishes like Nasi Lemak, the national dish featuring fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with sambal, anchovies, and peanuts, offer a complex yet comforting taste. Another must-try is Satay, marinated skewers of meat grilled to perfection and served with a rich peanut sauce, showcasing the art of Malaysian barbecue.

The best way to experience Malaysia's food scene is by diving into its local markets and hawker centres. In Kuala Lumpur, Jalan Alor is a famous street food retreat, while in Georgetown, Penang, Gurney Drive and Chulia Street offer endless culinary exploration. For Muslim travellers from the Philippines, Malaysia is exceptionally accommodating, with a vast majority of eateries, especially those serving traditional Malay cuisine, being Halal-certified or Muslim-friendly. You'll find Halal signs prominently displayed, and many establishments are accustomed to catering to Halal dietary requirements, ensuring a worry-free dining experience.

The regional variations in Malaysian cuisine are a compelling reason to explore different parts of the country. While Kuala Lumpur offers a broad spectrum of all Malaysian dishes, Penang is celebrated as the food capital, renowned for its distinct Hokkien and Peranakan influences, producing iconic dishes like Penang Assam Laksa and Rojak. Further south, Johor Bahru offers its own specialties, often incorporating influences from its proximity to Singapore and its own Malay heritage. Exploring these regional differences provides a deeper appreciation for the country's diverse culinary traditions.

When dining in Malaysia, understanding local customs can enhance your experience. Tipping is not mandatory in most restaurants, as a service charge is often included in the bill, but rounding up for exceptional service is appreciated. Meal times are generally similar to the Philippines, with lunch typically between 12 PM and 2 PM, and dinner from 7 PM onwards. Don't be afraid to try street food; it's generally safe and incredibly delicious, but always opt for stalls that appear busy and clean. Ordering is usually straightforward, and most vendors are happy to guide you through their offerings.

Navigating Malaysian Culture and Ensuring a Safe Journey

Malaysia is a country that values respect and politeness, and understanding a few key cultural norms will greatly enhance your interactions as a visitor from the Philippines. The Malay culture places importance on humility and avoiding direct confrontation. It's customary to greet elders first and to use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is traditionally considered unclean. While Malaysians are generally very welcoming, showing respect for local customs, particularly regarding dress and behaviour in religious sites, is always appreciated.

When visiting religious sites, such as mosques or temples, modest dress is essential. This typically means covering your shoulders and knees; many sites provide sarongs or headscarves if needed. It’s also important to remove your shoes before entering prayer areas. In public spaces, maintaining a calm demeanour and avoiding loud behaviour is advisable. For attractions like museums or historical sites, observe any photography restrictions and be mindful of other visitors, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone.

Malaysia is generally a safe country for travellers, but like any destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Utilising ride-hailing apps like Grab, which is widely available and reliable across Malaysia, is a convenient and safe way to get around cities. Familiarise yourself with the local currency, the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in busy urban areas after dark.

In case of emergencies, the national emergency number in Malaysia is 999. For Filipino citizens travelling abroad, it's always prudent to know the contact details of the Philippines Embassy or Consulate in Malaysia. The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur can provide assistance to citizens in need. It's also recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, ensuring peace of mind throughout your trip.

Your Travel Guide to Malaysia: From Philippines to Malaysian Shores

Getting to Malaysia from the Philippines is a straightforward and popular travel route, with numerous daily flights connecting major cities. Airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, and Malaysia Airlines operate direct flights from Manila (NAIA), Clark, Cebu (Mactan), and Davao to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Flight durations typically range from 3 to 4 hours, and prices can vary significantly based on the season and booking time, but booking in advance can secure more affordable fares. It's advisable to book flight tickets well in advance for the best deals.

Once you've arrived in Malaysia, navigating the country is relatively easy thanks to its well-developed transportation network. For intercity travel, Malaysia offers efficient options including the KTM intercity train service, which connects major towns and cities, and a comprehensive network of express buses. Domestic flights are also available for longer distances, particularly to East Malaysia. Within cities like Kuala Lumpur, the public transport system, including the LRT, monorail, and MRT, is extensive and user-friendly, making it simple to reach most attractions without needing a car.

The best time to visit Malaysia from the Philippines generally falls outside of the monsoon seasons, though the country experiences a tropical climate year-round. The dry seasons, typically from March to October, offer more pleasant weather for outdoor activities and sightseeing, with slightly cooler temperatures and less humidity. Peak tourist seasons often coincide with school holidays and major festivals, which can mean higher hotel prices and larger crowds. Travelling during the shoulder seasons or off-peak periods can offer a more relaxed experience and better value for accommodation.

Before you depart for Malaysia, ensure you have a few essentials ready. The local currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). While major credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger establishments, it's wise to carry some cash for smaller vendors and street food. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps to consider include Grab for transportation, Google Maps for navigation, and a currency converter. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.
