I stayed at Ong Bun Pension House for a few hours on my first and penultimate day in my Iloilo visit. I'm a solo traveler and this has been a really good choice. The staff were kind and hospitable. The area is safe and near the city tourists spots. I tried the fan room and the executive room. With the fan room, you will be getting a simple room and a shared bathroom. I chose this room since I only stayed at the city for hours and then went to the Gigantes tour. If you have the budget to do so, just choose the executive room since it's clean and comfier due to the air conditioning and your own private bathroom. Also, they offer airport transfers. As of my visit, it costs around PHP600 and it's exclusively just you. Booking in the app has been incredibly convenient as apparently, this place is quite popular for last-minute reservations and some didn't have a room anymore due to the place being fully booked. So it's a necessity to book in advance rather than doing it last minute.

From the iconic La Paz Batchoy to the delicate sweetness of Pancit Molo, Ilonggo cuisine is characterized by its fresh ingredients, subtle yet complex flavours, and a deep-rooted tradition of hospitality. Exploring these dishes is an essential part of understanding the city's culture and heritage, offering a delicious insight into local life.

When it comes to dining, Iloilo City Proper offers a spectrum of experiences. For authentic local flavours, head to the bustling markets and local eateries in areas like Ortiz or the central Iloilo City Proper district. These spots are perfect for sampling street food and regional specialties. For those seeking Halal options, it's advisable to inquire at larger hotels or specifically seek out restaurants that cater to Muslim dietary needs, as dedicated Halal establishments might be less common outside of major hubs. The city's culinary landscape is diverse, ensuring something for every palate.

The affordability of dining in Iloilo City Proper is a significant draw for international travellers. A hearty meal from a local eatery or market can cost as little as ₱100-₱200 (approximately $2-$4 USD), offering incredible value. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱400-₱800 ($8-$16 USD) per person for a full meal, while upscale dining experiences might range from ₱1,000-₱2,000 ($20-$40 USD) or more. This price point is highly favourable compared to what travellers from the US, Europe, or India might expect in their home countries or other major Asian cities.

Navigating dining etiquette in Iloilo City Proper is straightforward and generally relaxed. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10% of the bill) being customary. Meals are typically enjoyed at a leisurely pace, and it's polite to wait for your host or the eldest person at the table to begin eating. Many local eateries operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and while reservations are not usually required for casual dining, they are recommended for popular restaurants, especially during peak hours.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Iloilo City Proper

Understanding local customs and etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Iloilo City Proper. Filipinos, and Ilonggos in particular, are known for their warmth and hospitality, often going out of their way to assist visitors. A common greeting is a smile and a nod, and using "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority shows respect. While English is widely spoken, making communication easy for international travellers, making an effort to learn a few basic Tagalog or Hiligaynon phrases will be greatly appreciated.

When visiting cultural sites like Museo Iloilo or the Iloilo Provincial Capitol, maintaining a respectful demeanour is important. Dress modestly, especially when visiting churches or more traditional sites; avoid overly revealing clothing. Photography rules vary, so always check for signage or ask permission before taking pictures, particularly of people. Queuing is generally observed, and patience is a virtue, especially in busy areas. Being mindful of these practices ensures a positive experience for both you and the local community.

Iloilo City Proper is generally a safe city for tourists, but like any urban area, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and reliable, offering a convenient and transparent way to get around. If using taxis, ensure the meter is used or agree on a fare beforehand. Familiarize yourself with offline map applications and keep emergency contact numbers readily accessible.

In case of emergencies, the local police can be reached at 911. For specific tourist assistance, local authorities may have dedicated hotlines or tourist police units. It's always advisable for travellers to have the contact information for their respective embassies or consulates in the Philippines. For Filipino travellers, understanding travel advisories from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is crucial, and having contact details for the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) can be helpful for OFWs. Ensuring you have adequate travel insurance is also a prudent step for all visitors.
