This was my second time staying at Occidental and it was great. The food is good and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The resort is clean and well maintained. I am a certified diver and them having their own dock and dive shop is great. We will definitely be going back.

We just spent 8 days here and both enjoyed it very much the property is beautiful and well maintained. The food all around was very good with some buffet nights being a bit of a hit or miss but that’s depending on personal taste. The bars for the most part were pretty fast especially the adults only pool bar. The adults only pool was a nice getaway from the loud music and noisy crowd at the main pool but the pool needs to be skimmed more often as there can be quite a few leaves and bugs floating around by noon. The beach was very nice with clear signage as to the inherent risk you take swimming in the ocean with there being sharks, stingrays, jellyfish and crocodiles. The water is fairly calm as it’s not facing directly into open ocean on the east. The chairs on the other hand are quite a problem at this resort as they don’t have enough of them for the amount of rooms they fill for the resort. If you’re not up at the crack of dawn going to the beach to get your seats you’re out of luck and that’s that no extra chairs you would have to sit on the beach but as the sand has lots of coral and shells in it that becomes quite uncomfortable fast. Other than that we loved it there and those would be our only gripes

If you plan to stay at this resort, I highly recommend renting a car for your stay. If you don’t, you will be at the mercy of various aggressive salespeople who will quote you wildly different and inflated prices for any activities you might want to do in order to offer you ‘discounts’ if you agree to sit through the vacation club presentation. You will lose hours of your vacation to this harassment and will be subjected to some pretty nasty attitude if you dare to point out that their 30K (plus per person ‘food’ charges every trip) price tag for 25 years of vacations isn’t at all the amazing deal they claim it is. The resort grounds are beautifully maintained and the staff are wonderful - except for the front desk workers and the aforementioned salespeople. The beach has eroded a great deal but the sand is still nice and the water clear. However, this property is located at the end of a line of resorts along the same beach and is adjacent to a nature park which is home to crocodiles. The only reference to this danger are very small signs about wildlife at the edge of the beach. In early April, a guest was brutally attacked by a crocodile in the water in front of the resort. I found out about this just before our trip but we had already booked so I couldn’t change to a different hotel. I watched many couples wander off down the beach towards the park and no one from the staff warned them. The food is bad - the worst I’ve had at any resort I’ve stayed at.

Overall good experience, the room was great, the pools were great, the staff were great, but I booked this place specifically because I read that they were accommodating for dietary restrictions, the food was ok, I am glad that I brought my own snacks, most of the time I ended up eating fruit. The staff were helpful but I have a card with my dietary restrictions on it and I was having to present it every time I ate, which was fine, but there were inconsistencies, most times I couldn’t eat at the buffet, and they would offer to prepare something in the kitchen which was usually steak or chicken with peppers and onions and corn tortillas. And the drinks at the bar were usually cross contaminated. I got symptoms a few times. I’m gluten and dairy free (celiac).

Johnny at the entrance is amazing, wonderful, helpful and can make change in US dollars. He also gives excellent advice for travel around the island. The ladies at the front desk were not pleasant or helpful. They did not give us the electricity card for our room nor did they mention that restaurant reservations must be made with them. We had to figure out things on our own or ask Johnny. We learned that the hotel does not have wash cloths unless you booked the Royal level. The resort is a long walk from the beach which was great for us but consider this if you have mobility issues. The room AC will not go below 75F. The refrigerator barely cools drinks. The ice machine didn't work in our area or the one next to us. The resort is in the jungle with birds, lemurs and iguanas. The scenery is beautiful! The beach is amazing! The water is beautiful, the sand is nice and a pool and restaurant are on the water! Swimming and snorkeling is really good! Go down to the beach before breakfast to put a beach towel on the lounge chairs if you want one because they get taken quickly. Tipping results in better service. The Mango Margarita with the spices on the rim is Fantastic! The fine dining restaurants are really good! The buffets are not huge but had enough variety for us. Our initial impressions were a tad bit disappointing but our experience got better everyday and we had a wonderful stay!

We had a great stay at Occidental. The staff provided excellent service and everything we needed was available. Our room was clean, comfortable, and always kept well stocked. The grounds and beautiful gardens were impeccably maintained. There wasn’t much to do at night which is a shame since it’s expensive to cab in to the market area. The food menu at the evening buffet could use some tweaking but we found fresh options to sustain us at every meal. The a la cart options were great.

The location itself was stunning. The grounds are maintained well and the beach was very clean. The food served at both the buffets were surprisingly good (except for the deserts). The cocktails were not made well. Our air conditioner in our room only worked on low and wouldn’t get the room colder than 25 Celsius which is better than nothing considering the heat. The nightclub room wasn’t open every night and the air conditioning in there was working well either. The bar in the nightclub was not operating at the time of our visit. The spa wasn’t fully staffed so we were never able to make an appointment.

Upon learning we hadn’t, he immediately invited us to a special “welcome breakfast” with a member of the staff, the following morning. He said he needed 20 usd per couple to reserve the invitation. We agreed and scheduled to meet at 8:30 the next morning. In the morning, we arrived, meet with the manager at the desk, received our deposit money, and were escorted to the breakfast buffet by a young fellow. Unfortunately the small talk turned into a timeshare pitch. Can’t believe this is still a thing. If you play along and listen until the end, you’re rewarded with some “Monopoly money”.
