The Occidental Hotel

We came and booked for 3 adults for the room. However, on arrival, we only received 2 towels and 2 sets of soap and shampoo, which I had to asked the extra based on my booking. Then for our 8 days of stay, our towels were only exchanged for some of the days, whereas our bed sheets were changed around our day 6 of our stay. In addition, our room were very dimly lit so those that want to have proper make-up in the room would have to use extra lights or the bathroom, and the mirror at the sink is pretty high up for those that are 5"9 below so it was hard for them to view themselves through that mirror. It was a great location to stay at, everything in CBD is very close by (public transportation, shops, etc). Our room was given no fans but it had a newer Air Conditioner installed so it was functional for heating or cooling as needed. The roads does get a bit loud late at night but I've prepared myself to be either super tired at night or use noise cancelling headphones to have a proper sleep. Overall, it was as expected for the price it was charging.

Easy check-in and check-out. The staff were so friendly and helpful. I loved how many places were in walking distance. We would stay here again.

Check in was challenging; no one to contact and phone numbers wouldn’t work. Luckily someone was there to assist. We arrived on a Sunday - no staff, the bar and restaurants where the website directs were closed (also closed on Mondays). They need a better system.

We were disgusted with the noise all night into the early hours, we had no hot water in the shower or the hand basin, no hairdryer, the air conditioner would not heat, when I called downstairs to hotel manager, he eventually came to our room and stated the sign on the bathroom wall explained......the sign read, Due to low water pressure,you need to run the water for at least 10 mins before it will come through hot, sorry for the inconvenience !! Well, the water pressure was great, not a problem, worst is what about the amount of water being wasted. I request a refund for our 2 night stay. The room also had a musty smell.

Thought the hotel was open Sundays, but wasn't. Called the noted numbers upon arrival to gain access.

Fabulous location, quirky heritage building, however, no hot water and large informal rough sleeping community in abandoned building next door.

It's excellent value for money. The rooms are comfortable and clean and Wynyard Station is a block away, meaning you can roll out of bed and jump on the train to wherever you want to go. Would definitely stay there again.

It was a community style bathroom that was unexpected. It was all clean enough and we never had trouble accessing toilets or showers when we needed them. Our room was a little too small for all the furniture they had in there. You could only open the fridge part way as it hit the bed. It was tight to maneuver around each other and the furniture. Still the amenities were nice to have. We were able to store our luggage there after check out while we waited for our flights the last day. That was very helpful. The staff were helpful and friendly enough, though not easily gotten hold of. The price was very great. We would consider staying again. We loved the area. It was easy access to loads of everything.
