Singapore Airlines Profile

Singapore Airlines (SQ/SIA) is the national flag carrier of Singapore, headquartered at Changi Airport, Singapore. As a profound 5-star airline, Singapore Airlines is listed as the most awarded airline, popularly known as the first airline supported by a double-deck Airbus A380.

Singapore Airlines was founded in 1947, as it was still incorporated under the name Malayan Airways Limited (MAL), a joint venture between Imperial Airways, the Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool and the Straits Steamship of Singapore.

Singapore Airlines has a unique characteristic in terms of branding. Instead of promoting the aircraft and modern features, the airline always communicates its message through the depiction of Singapore Girl, female flight attendants dressed in special uniform of Sarong Kebaya. The term Singapore Girl was created in 1972, emphasizing the value of hospitality and service excellence.

More than a 5-star airline, Singapore Airlines is widely known as a trendsetter airline. As early as in the 1970s, it is the first airline that offers free headsets and selectable menu of in-flight meals and drinks in Economy Class. The company keep their high-standard and make sure that consumers will get the best service even with cheap Singapore Airlines tickets. In 1991, Singapore Airlines introduced satellite-based in-flight telephones before any other airlines. It is also the first airline in the world to offer Audio Video On Demand (AVOD) in all classes.

Singapore Airlines offers 3 travel classes: First Class, Business Class and Economy Class. In 2006, Singapore Airlines refurbished its cabin by introducing the world’s widest First and Business Class full-flat seat and a brand new Economy Class seat. The airline also introduced its remarkable in-flight entertainment system dubbed KrisWorld. All of these facilities supported with competitive prices through Singapore Airlines promo that launched in certain periods.

The Singapore Airlines Group owns more than 20 subsidiaries, some of them are airline-related like Scoot and SilkAir. Scoot is a low-cost carrier which is wholly owned by Singapore Airlines and serves medium to long-haul routes between Singapore, Australasia and China with widebody aircrafts. SilkAir is a premium regional airline, also wholly owned by Singapore Airlines, serving regional destinations with narrowbody aircrafts.

Checked baggage allowance for Economy Class is 30 kg, Business Class 40 kg and First Class 50 kg. There is an extra 10 kg baggage allowance for infant, in addition to stroller/pushchair. Each passenger is allowed to carry cabin baggage up to 7 kg/1 piece for Economy Class, and 2 pieces (each 7 kg) for Business/First Class.

History of Singapore Airlines

The story of Singapore Airlines dates back to 1947 in British Malaya (colonial Singapore and Malaysia) under the name Malayan Airways Limited (MAL). It is a joint venture between Imperial Airways, the Ocean Steamship Company of Liverpool and the Straits Steamship of Singapore.

Since its early days, the airline has been emphasizing on the serving of in-flight meals by a female flight attendant. This becomes the precursor of its distinctive visual branding Singapore Girl.

In 1965, Singapore was expelled from the Federation of Malaysia and gained independence, making MAL the national airline for both Singapore and Malaysia. A year later, the name was changed to Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA). Malaysia-Singapore Airlines adopted a brand new logo and started to serve new routes to Taipei, Perth and some European cities like London and Rome with a fleet of De Havilland Comet, Boeing 707 and Boeing 737-100s, while retiring MAL’s older piston-powered Douglas DC-3 and DC-4s.

In 1972, MSA was split into two airline: Malaysia Airline System and Singapore Airlines. The latter decided to take over the former airline’s international routes and fleet. The airline then focused on fleet expansion, taking MSA’s Boeing 707s and Boeing 737-100s, while also adding Boeing 747-200s, Boeing 727-200 and the three-engined McDonnell Douglas DC-10.

Series of important events occurred in the 1980s. The airline’s headquarters moved from the old airport at Paya Lebar to the new Changi International Airport in 1981. Eight years later, Singapore Airlines became the first airline to operate a Boeing 747-400 across the Pacific. In the same year, the airline’s wholly owned SilkAir (formerly known as Tradewinds) was established as the country’s second airline and its regional subsidiary.

KrisFlyer, the airline’s frequent flyer programme was introduced in 1999, allowing passengers in all First, Business and Economy Class to earn mileage credits.

It set another world’s record in 2004 by inaugurating the longest non-stop commercial flight from Singapore to Los Angeles, followed by another non-stop flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey several months later. This flight, known as SQ 21, was served in an Airbus A340-500 (normally seating 313 passengers) seating only 100 passengers in an all business class configuration. This flight was the longest non-stop commercial route in the world, but was terminated in September 2013. In 2007, it became the first airline to operate the advanced double-decker Airbus A380.

Flight Attendant Uniform
