Hotels in Tokyo: choose a base for your itinerary

Tokyo has several useful hotel hubs, so “city centre” is only the start of the decision. Shinjuku suits a different daily route from Tokyo Station, Ginza or Asakusa. Choose the sights and onward journeys you want to prioritise, then compare the station entrance, room layout and facilities at each hotel. A hotel in a central ward can still involve a substantial journey to another part of the city.

For a first visit, shortlist one preferred area and one alternative. Travellers planning rail journeys beyond Tokyo may value an address near their departure station; families may gain more from confirmed beds and laundry facilities. A compact room beside the right station can be more practical than a larger room that adds transfers to every outing.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Shinjuku: compare the different sides of the station

West of the station, compare Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo at 2-2-1 Nishi-Shinjuku, Hyatt Regency Tokyo at 2-7-2 Nishi-Shinjuku and Hilton Tokyo at 6-6-2 Nishi-Shinjuku. These addresses provide several options within the western hotel and office district, but they are not interchangeable walks from the same platform.

Shinjuku Washington Hotel Main is at 3-2-9 Nishi-Shinjuku. Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku gives its address as 2-3-1 Yoyogi in Shibuya Ward, on the southern side of the Shinjuku station area. The ward name in a listing does not mean it is beside Shibuya Crossing.

For a Kabukicho address on the eastern side, consider Hotel Gracery Shinjuku at 1-19-1 Kabukicho. Compare that setting with the western hotel district if evening activities feature in your plans. For each property, use the station exit and walking route rather than relying on a general Shinjuku label.

Tokyo Station, Marunouchi and Nihonbashi

Shangri-La Tokyo is in Marunouchi Trust Tower at 1-8-3 Marunouchi. Oakwood Premier Tokyo lists 1-8-2 Marunouchi. Compare these when access to Tokyo Station is important, while checking the route to your particular train service. The station has multiple sides and extensive internal connections.

Nihonbashi offers another set of addresses east of the station area. Minn Nihonbashi is in Nihonbashi Hisamatsucho, while Minn Nihonbashi Suitengumae is in Nihonbashi Hakozakicho. They are distinct properties: use the full name and address when comparing room equipment, capacity and arrival instructions.

Ginza, Hibiya and Shiodome

Choose this wider area when shopping and dining around Ginza feature prominently in your visit. Hotel Grand Bach Tokyo Ginza is at 5-13-12 Ginza, while Mitsui Garden Hotel Ginza Premier is at 8-13-1 Ginza. Compare the room categories and nearby station routes for the parts of the district you plan to use.

Imperial Hotel, Tokyo lists an Uchisaiwaicho address on the Hibiya side. Conrad Tokyo is at 1-9-1 Higashi-Shinbashi in Minato Ward. A city-view or bay-view room is a specific booking choice, not a guaranteed feature of every room in this wider area.

Toranomon, Nagatacho and Kioicho

For another central hotel setting, compare The Okura Tokyo in Toranomon with The Capitol Hotel Tokyu in Nagatacho. Their actual locations matter more than treating both as a single Akasaka address. Match the nearest useful station with your work or sightseeing itinerary.

Hotel New Otani Tokyo Executive House Zen is within the New Otani complex at 4-1 Kioicho. The complex also has The Main and Garden Tower accommodation. Confirm the building and category you are reserving, particularly where lounge access or other category-specific benefits influence your choice.

Asakusa and Tokyo Dome

Asakusa is worth considering for time around Sensoji and the surrounding streets. Compare Richmond Hotel Premier Asakusa International at 2-6-7 Asakusa with APA Hotel Asakusa Ekimae at 1-12-16 Komagata. Check the exact railway operator and station entrance for your arrival; an Asakusa station name alone is not a complete walking route.

If attending an event at Tokyo Dome City, compare Tokyo Dome Hotel in Koraku, Bunkyo Ward. Its room views vary by floor and side: Park Side and Palace Side are different outlooks. A room photograph should be matched to the category you select.

Shinagawa and Shiomi

Shinagawa Prince Hotel lists an address in Takanawa, Minato Ward. Compare it when Shinagawa's rail connections fit your trip, including onward travel and airport access. Confirm the tower and room category within the hotel complex.

Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince Hotel is at 2-8-16 Shiomi in Koto Ward. Shiomi Station is on the JR Keiyo Line between Tokyo and Maihama, making it relevant when your itinerary includes both city visits and the Maihama area. It is a different base from a hotel at Tokyo Station or within a theme-park resort.

Compare Tokyo rooms by beds, space and equipment

For three people or a larger family

At Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku, the Standard Triple is 26.7 square metres and uses two 120-centimetre-wide beds plus a sofa bed. Its Standard Single, also offered as an Economy Double for two, is 15.7 square metres. Compare the actual sleeping arrangement instead of assuming that a double room gives the same space as a twin or triple.

Keio Plaza's Luxury Family Room is 46.3 square metres, with four beds and one sofa bed for up to five people. It also has two toilets and a bathroom with a separate shower booth, useful details for a group sharing one room. These features belong to that category rather than every room in the hotel.

Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince lists a Twin Room with Bunk Bed category at 29.7 square metres. Check its age and occupancy conditions for your children. Enter every guest and each child's age when searching; a sofa, daybed or space beside a bed does not automatically establish permission for an additional guest.

For cooking and laundry

Oakwood Premier Tokyo offers equipped kitchens, washer-dryers and work desks, making it worth comparing for an extended stay. Choose the unit size and bedroom arrangement you need rather than treating serviced apartments as a budget hotel category.

Minn Nihonbashi Suitengumae's operator describes rooms with washer-dryers, refrigerators, rice cookers and microwaves, with some categories accommodating up to eight guests. Its Hakozaki location is also within walking distance of Tokyo City Air Terminal. Confirm the selected room's capacity and follow the property's check-in instructions. Do not transfer the details of this property automatically to the separate Minn Nihonbashi address.

For swimming, bathing and lounge access

Hilton Tokyo offers an indoor swimming pool, with rooftop tennis as a separate facility. Tokyo Bay Shiomi Prince has a Japanese-style public bath, which serves a different purpose from a swimming pool. Check each property's access conditions if either facility is essential to your stay.

Similarly, lounge access depends on the hotel and booked category. Keio Plaza's Premier Grand lounge is for guests staying in Premier Grand rooms. A high floor, a suite label or a photograph of a lounge does not establish that access is part of another offer.

Airport arrival and booking your Tokyo stay

Check whether your flight uses Haneda or Narita before choosing accommodation for its airport connections. The Narita Express links Narita with major stations including Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku, while Keikyu provides a rail option between Haneda and Shinagawa. Check the current timetable for your travel date, then plan the final station-to-hotel journey with luggage.

For a late arrival or early flight, confirm that the transport and hotel reception arrangements match your timing. A hotel in Shinagawa or Shinjuku is a city hotel, not accommodation inside an airport terminal. If considering an airport bus, verify the actual stop and operating service before relying on a hotel pickup description.
