I visit Newcastle about four times per year and frankly wouldn't stay anywhere else.
From the moment you walk off the Station concourse, through the beautiful revolving door, you're made to feel welcome.
Check in staff will always accommodate early arrivals, if available, but they do have secure luggage storage.
The convenience to the city and the amenities are self evident, but the staff are the jewel in the Royal crown. Beyond exception they are friendly and efficient.
Special mention for Michael, who is a fixture, serving at breakfast (incredible quality, buffet style) and later at the bar, always convivial.
Five stars, every time.

Travelled as a family of 4 in 2 x twins which were clean and met all our needs. It's a grand hotel with lots of history. The staff from reception, breakfast, and cleaning staff were all very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We'll done, customer service at its best.

Extremely poor service and stay. We were given a smaller room than we had asked for (images do not match the actual state of the room), and the air conditioner is broken; we were provided with fans but we do not have proper ventilation in our room, causing the room to be very hot and stuffy, and after taking a shower the room becomes very damp. Television does not work, and the fans aren't very good. There are also insect stains on the bedding. Service is misleading, we were told that our check out was at noon however we were urged to leave as soon as 11am came by, asking to charge us for overstaying in the hotel. Our belongings were held at the lobby as well because of this, and the staff were reluctant to return our belongings.
Extremely disappointed at the service and conditions of the hotel, will not recommend it to anyone.

As expected nice building but pasted its best although would not go as far as to say run down. Only thing that came as a surprise was additional fee to use pool. This might have been on the web site but did not notice.

Drain smells in the room and bathroom, room is minuscule under the eaves.
Decor shabby everywhere, paintwork shabby, carpets in common areas repaired by duct tape. Period features gutted out.

A lovely hotel with lots of character but in need of some tlc. Room was very small with a very small bed for two people. Window wouldn’t open so a bit stuffy.
Even though I checked in online the girl on reception seemed a bit clueless as she kept saying I need a reference number of my email and to enter on the self check in. It took some time to convince her I didn’t need to do this. Then I wanted to book breakfast for the following morning and she told me it would be at the full price. I disputed this as they were offering a special price and again it took a while to get sorted at the special price.
We were given tickets to present at breakfast and then when we did the following morning there was no record of our booking on the list so yet again it took a while to get this sorted.
Think some of the staff need some training in customer service.

Dinner was poor, chicken breast was dry as a bone. The room was hot and stuffy with no air con, and toilet intermittently topped up or drained. Such a shame as we like staying at these traditional old school classy establishments.

I was quite disappointed in our hotel room . From the outside the hotel looks amazing but inside it is quite tired and in need of some tlc .
There were numerous things that could be improved on. The air con in the room wasn’t working , the pillows were in need of replacement as they were lumpy
The bathroom had an old plastic hair tie on the floor behind the door and the bath/shower had a lot of black mould .
There is a £50 deposit taken on arrival to cover damages/ mini bar ( refunded after checkout) but there was no mini bar in our room .
Only positive was the location for the station the next morning which was the reason for choosing it .

Disabled traveller that requested a room near the lifts, checked in, out the lift and then 2 sets of stairs. Receptionist couldnt move me. Room not clean see photos attached and on a evening coming back to the hotel felt like a prison roll call. When i travel with work the amount i do not experienced this and would not stay here again

The biggest problem at this magnificent old hotel is bedroom temperature. Even when it’s a cool 18c outside, it’s hot inside. At night, not just daytime. A fan is supplied as standard but sleep quality is often bad.
Despite this, location is excellent, so it works for many.
But if you value your sleep, find somewhere else to stay!!

Our room was very hot, unable to open the windows. Fan in the wardrobe but only circulated warm air. The hotel had staffing issues so the pool was closed, very dissapointed as we booked this one to use the pool. Having said this, the hotel and room was clean, the indulgence pack was lovely and they can't help having sick staff at short notice so we will return.
