Travelled as a family of 4 in 2 x twins which were clean and met all our needs. It's a grand hotel with lots of history. The staff from reception, breakfast, and cleaning staff were all very friendly and made us feel very welcome. We'll done, customer service at its best.

Dinner was poor, chicken breast was dry as a bone. The room was hot and stuffy with no air con, and toilet intermittently topped up or drained. Such a shame as we like staying at these traditional old school classy establishments.

I was quite disappointed in our hotel room . From the outside the hotel looks amazing but inside it is quite tired and in need of some tlc . There were numerous things that could be improved on. The air con in the room wasn’t working , the pillows were in need of replacement as they were lumpy The bathroom had an old plastic hair tie on the floor behind the door and the bath/shower had a lot of black mould . There is a £50 deposit taken on arrival to cover damages/ mini bar ( refunded after checkout) but there was no mini bar in our room . Only positive was the location for the station the next morning which was the reason for choosing it .

Disabled traveller that requested a room near the lifts, checked in, out the lift and then 2 sets of stairs. Receptionist couldnt move me. Room not clean see photos attached and on a evening coming back to the hotel felt like a prison roll call. When i travel with work the amount i do not experienced this and would not stay here again

The biggest problem at this magnificent old hotel is bedroom temperature. Even when it’s a cool 18c outside, it’s hot inside. At night, not just daytime. A fan is supplied as standard but sleep quality is often bad. Despite this, location is excellent, so it works for many. But if you value your sleep, find somewhere else to stay!!

Our room was very hot, unable to open the windows. Fan in the wardrobe but only circulated warm air. The hotel had staffing issues so the pool was closed, very dissapointed as we booked this one to use the pool. Having said this, the hotel and room was clean, the indulgence pack was lovely and they can't help having sick staff at short notice so we will return.

I’ve been going to this hotel for many years. The staff in the restaurant have been the same every time. So helpful and friendly. Food is delicious The hotel is getting a massive revamp which to be honest is needed. The plunge pool has not worked for a few years now. The pool area is always immaculate but again needs an overhaul Bedrooms are spotless. Very large. Tea coffee and hot chocolate available in the rooms I’ll definitely go back in the future

A nice hotel that back in the day would have been very grand and you can see it's had money to update it. Generally staff were very pleasant and helpful however did a couple who seemed unbothered they were working in customer facing role. Hotel has a leisure club but you to walk outside and their is an extra payment that's not mentioned on here.

Location is excellent from central station. Beautiful interior but the rooms are a bit outdated. You will most likely have a noisy room if you face the street. There was no airconditioning but my room did have a fan which was great. Breakfast was decent. Typical English breakfast with different options.

Large grand lobby and hallways. Digital checking terminals didn't work. Room was basic, dated. Receptionist seemed keen to pre-authorize my card for £50 when checking in ar 11pm for an overnight stay. No idea what kind of cost I mate have incurred, since the room fridge was empty. Received 6 emails between booking and checking in. Excessive.

Let’s get the negatives out of the way - breakfast quality was dubious - not sure how they made scrambled eggs and cramped buffet area. The hotel is, of course, a Victorian railway hotel. The front windows need a clean. This is our second visit. Rooms are good. Would I rush back??? Probably not, but central location is a positive and parking (albeit at cost). The instructions if you are parking a car should be in capitals. THE PARKING ENTRANCE LOOKS LIKE A TAXI/STATION ENTRANCE. If you miss you are doomed to go a very long way round the one way system. It is a bit like landing on a snake that takes you from 97 to 4.

My single room was excellent value. I was fine walking up the final flight of stairs but thought that the lack of complete lift access should have been pointed out. With the windows open it was not too hot. I had a good view from the very top of the hotel towards Gateshead. There was not much noisy from the railway during the night. The bed was comfortable. In future I will be booking directly as the hotel no longer included swimming pool access in third party bookings.
