Staff nice throughout.

After booking we heard the hotel was closing down and you can see why The location is great but the hotel is very worn out and in desperate need of update Staff, however, were lovely.

Our first ten minutes were not good, whilst the doorman was charming and helpful, the receptionist was dour and curt, unable to make eye contact, no smile, it didn’t fill us with enthusiasm for our stay. We left our bags because we knew we were too early for our room. On returning at three we were met by the lovely Karen who welcomed us and for the rest of her time with us worked above and beyond to make us happy. I must add we made no mention of our original treatment. We found ourselves in a room adjoining another, the doors to both were unlocked, Karen sorted this immediately. At eight thirty, we realised that the crying infant in the adjacent room meant that we were in for a sleepless night. Again I approached Karen, she found an alternative room of the same standard and helped move us to it, even, along with the porter, separating the bed in to twins to accommodate us. Excellent, old school, service that one would expect from a five start hotel. What we hadn’t realised until the following day, was the noisier than normal air conditioning which we had tried to switch off and couldn’t, was in fact a huge industrial duct stationed right outside the window, obscuring any view of the outside world and resonating its industrial drone throughout the night, not the best end to a strange experience! Our breakfast was excellent in both content and service, as was our checkout , once again by a considerate and charming receptionist who secured our bags for our return.

Our last visit before the hotel closes 😢. We go once a year, normally around Christmas, but as it’s closing soon brought this forward. Huge thank you to all the Grosvenor team who we have met many times over the years for their kindness and hospitality. Chester is loosing not just a hotel but a genuinely unique landmark and much of that is down to the amazing staff. I hope it will return but sadly I suspect it may never have the special/uniqueness it has had as the staff will all have moved on or even retired. Wishing all the staff and the hotel the very best for the future.

Was great accommodation such a shame closing down at end of September for 2 years

The property is clearly aged and is not being maintained, we appreciate it is shutting in late September but this has been happening over an extended period of time. We enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch but breakfast was a tad disappointing with quite limited options and the fruit salad was meagre and limited in content and variety. The air con was like a plane taking off continually and so we were not able to sleep with it being left on so we were quite hot at night. Having worked here in the 1980s the level of service has reduced and standards have sadly dropped. Look forward to seeing what the new reincarnation looks like post RAAC removal and update.

Great location. Staff were both professional and friendly. Continental breakfast was a brilliant option within the price of the booking. Will be sad to the doors close in September.

Amazing hotel very upmarket

Repeat customer, stayed here without any issue multiple times. Breakfast is particularly good which is one of my reasons for booking. Stayed on 20 July at a cost of £175. The room provided was beyond disgusting. The carpet was stained throughout, the rug by the bed was covered in some sort of red substance. Not vacuumed, either. The sort of Travellodge-type place you'd wipe your feet on the way out. I thought I'd relax with a drink from the mini bar... To find that caked in dirt and grime on it, on top of it, by the side of it. Reported to reception, who were sympathetic, who suggested it was the issue of the outsourced cleaning team. The problems in this room were not caused by one guest, it's clear the hotel management don't check these rooms often. I had agreed a refund, but days later I learn I have been given... £66 back. Advice: There are plenty of fantastic hotels in Chester. Don't be fooled by the fake five stars of this one - your money would be better spent elsewhere.

Staff and location was excellent. Spacious bedroom and ensuite.

The Staff were very helpful including finding us a new room when the first was too noisy (David). Including a complimentary breakfast to make up for our inconvenience. Sadly the hotel has become dated needing refurbishment of bathrooms, plumbing and general modernisation within its historic and lovely interior. Very sad to hear of all the Staff being made redundant.

Always a lovely experience staying here. Staff are very pleasant, do their job with pride and great ability. Bedrooms are very comfortable. Breakfast is delicious. Hotel is central yet peaceful,. Always our first choice in Chester
