GYD is the busiest airport in the South Caucasus, handling over 7.5 million passengers in 2024 — a year that saw passenger numbers grow more than 30% on the year before. The airport has been rated a 5-Star Regional Airport by Skytrax, reflecting its modern facilities and service standards.
GYD connects Baku to destinations across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the CIS region, serving as Azerbaijan's primary link to international air travel.
GYD is the home hub of national carrier Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), along with cargo operators AZAL Avia Cargo and Silk Way West Airlines. A wide range of international airlines also operate scheduled services into Baku.
The airport has two passenger terminals. Terminal 1, opened in 2014, is the newer and larger facility, built to handle up to 6 million passengers a year with 12 boarding bridges, and now hosts most major airlines. Terminal 2 primarily serves budget carriers.
The Aero Express H1 bus runs 24 hours a day between the airport and 28 May metro station in central Baku for a low fixed fare, connecting onward to the Baku Metro. BakuBus also runs a direct service to 28 May station roughly every 20 minutes. Taxis — including the official Baku Taxi service with a booth in Terminal 1 — take about 20–25 minutes into the city centre.
GYD offers a full range of airport facilities including lounges, dining, duty-free and retail shopping, currency exchange, and free Wi-Fi throughout the terminals.
