It sits about 2 km north of Chaweng on Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, with a single runway around 2,100 metres long. The airport is best known for its open-air, garden-style terminals — thatched roofs, palm-tree pillars and rattan walls set among tropical landscaping rather than the usual enclosed concrete terminal — which earned it Thailand's Outstanding Architecture Award in 1998 and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand's Green Airport Award for four straight years (2022–2025).
