Tokyo is the kind of place that somehow blends neon lights, back-alley izakayas, and vending machines that sell hot soup. And somehow, it all just… works.
Although Tokyo has two airports, a flight to Haneda drops you way closer to the middle of things than Narita does, which is handy if your brain’s already racing with thoughts of sushi trains and late-night konbini runs.
Whether you’re chasing cherry blossoms, high-tech toilet talk, or just a break from the everyday, here’s everything you need to know about flights from Sydney to Tokyo (Haneda).
If you’re after a direct hop between Sydney and Haneda, there’s a handful of airlines that’ll sort you out. Fly with these airlines and there are no layovers to struggle through; just put your seat back, buckle up and keep an eye out for Mt Fuji.
If you're after some more options, you may want to look into flying from Sydney to Tokyo (Narita). While Haneda is the only one with direct flights, there may be some affordable connecting options to consider, too.
Want to see all your options in one go? Traveloka lines them up side by side with no guesswork, just prices, inclusions, and flight times all in one scroll.
When flying direct, it takes {shortestHour} hours and {shortestMinute} minutes to fly from {originLocation} to {destinationLocation}. That’s long enough for a few movies and a couple of naps.
Prices bounce around quite a bit. Most of the time, you’re looking at somewhere between AU$500 and AU$1,000 one-way. But every now and then, they drop way lower. We’ve seen some go for {flightCheapestPrice}, give or take.
Booking during sales like EOFY or Black Friday can help big time. Traveloka usually flags those early, so keep an eye out.
July and August are coming in hot with the best prices, but that’s also Tokyo’s warmest and muggiest stretch. January through March are usually not too badly either, and line up nicely with Japan’s ski season.
Prices shoot up in late March and April, though. Everyone’s chasing the sakura, so the cheapest seats fill fast. So unless you’re hoping to see the cherry blossoms in bloom, then avoid travelling at this time.
Haneda Airport (HND) is Tokyo’s more central airport. It’s just a little south of the central city — about 15 kms or so — which means you’re not stuck on a train for an hour before seeing your first vending machine.
Here’s how people usually get into the city:
Australian passport holders can head over without a visa if you’re staying under 90 days. Just double-check your passport isn’t about to expire mid-trip.
Our top tip: fill out your Visit Japan Web profile before you leave. It cuts down wait time at the airport and lets you skip the old-school paperwork.
Tokyo doesn’t mess with daylight saving. In the Australian winter, it’s 1 hour behind Sydney. But when we fast-forward our clocks in summer, the gap jumps to 2 hours. Your arrival time’s already adjusted in your booking, though, so no need to sit there doing timezone maths.
