No airlines fly direct to Koh Samui, Thailand from Australia. Flights generally require at least one stopover en route to this destination. Popular stopover cities include Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The only airline to fly to both Australia and Koh Samui is Scoot, so if you’re looking for a smooth journey, it’s best to book a through-ticket with the Singapore-based airline.

Where is the airport in Koh Samui?

Built and owned by Bangkok Airways, the airport is 2km north of the city centre. There are several transport options available from the airport.

  • Private taxi: Taxis can be booked either through an online booking form ahead of time or at the transport counter in the Arrivals area. Fares start from 400 Thai Baht (AUD$18) for a car taxi or 600 Thai Baht (AU$28) for a minivan taxi.
  • Shared minivan transfer: There is also the option of sharing a minivan with other travellers, with prices starting at 100 Thai Baht (AU$4.70) per person for a ride. The shared minivan will not depart without a minimum five passengers so it may be a wait of up to 30 minutes before the vehicle leaves if it’s not busy.
  • Car rental: Major car rental companies such as Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Avis operate in Koh Samui and can be found in the arrivals area.

Some airports are simply just a way to get to A to B and the architecture reflects this. This isn’t the case with Samui Airport, which has been informally dubbed by some travellers as the “most beautiful airport in the world” due to its picturesque open-air design. 

When is the cheapest time to fly to Koh Samui

All set to plan your trip to Koh Samui and ready to block out annual leave dates on your calendar? The most popular time to visit Koh Samui is in the dry season between December and August when weather is pleasant, not too hot and humidity levels are lowest. Hoping for a bargain? The cheapest time to travel to Koh Samui is during the monsoon season from October to November but bear in mind the weather might not be ideal.

Visa/Passport requirements when flying to Koh Samui

For short term stays for business or tourism in Thailand, Australians can get a visa exemption for up to 60 days, which you will be issued on arrival. This can be extended to 90 days though, if you want an extra-long stay.

As of May 1, 2025, you must complete a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) within three days of arriving in Thailand, and this must be submitted online through the Thailand Immigration Bureau website.
