KMG is the IATA code for Kunming Changshui International Airport, the airport that serves Kunming, capital of Yunnan province in south-west China. In Chinese it is written 昆明长水国际机场. Getting from Kunming airport to the city

Metro Line 6

The lowest-cost and most predictable way into Kunming is Metro Line 6. The airport station is on level B2, directly beneath the terminal. Line 6 runs towards the city centre, where you can change to other lines for Nanping Street, Green Lake Park and Kunming Railway Station. The metro does not run through the night, so late arrivals should plan on a taxi.

Airport buses

Airport shuttle buses leave from the arrivals level and serve several parts of Kunming. There are services to Kunming Railway Station in the city centre and to the Xiaoximen commercial area. Buses are a good choice if your hotel is near one of their stops and you have a lot of luggage.

Taxi

Official taxis wait outside the arrivals hall on level B1. The ride to central areas such as Xiaoximen takes around 40 to 50 minutes. Queue at the marked taxi rank and avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal. Have your hotel's address written in Chinese to show the driver.

Tips for flying through KMG

• Arrive early. A safe rule at Kunming airport is two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one. The terminal is big, and walks between check-in and the farthest gates take time.
• Security is thorough. Chinese airports check power banks, lighters and liquids closely. Carry power banks in your hand luggage, never in checked bags.
• Bring your passport details. Domestic flights in China require the same ID used for booking, and foreign visitors need their passport at check-in and security.
• Check entry rules. If you are arriving from abroad, confirm China's current entry and transit requirements for your nationality before you travel.
• Dress in layers. Kunming is known as the Spring City for its mild climate, but mornings and evenings on the plateau can be cool, and the sun is strong at midday.

Exploring Kunming and Yunnan from the airport

Kunming is a relaxed city with a mild climate that suits travel in most months. Green Lake Park is a favourite spot for a morning walk. Dianchi Lake, on the city's southern edge, is backed by the Western Hills. Nanping Street and the Jinma Biji arches area are good places to wander, eat and shop.

A short trip out of the city takes you to the Stone Forest, a landscape of tall limestone pillars. Many visitors also use Kunming as a base for the rest of Yunnan: the old towns of Dali and Lijiang, the mountains around Shangri-La and the tropical south around Jinghong are all reachable from here by air, rail or road.
