There are many opinions on how the name Bangi was derived. First opinion suggested that the name Bangi came from the name of a plant called ‘serai wangi’ that grows wild along the river banks in Bangi. Somehow, the word serai was omitted and only left with the word ‘wangi’ which means fragrant. However, due to the faulty of local Mendailing and Minang pronunciation, ‘wangi’ becomes ‘bangi’.
Second opinion suggested the name Bangi was taken from the name of the Tok Batin that has opened the placement. His name was Tok Bangai.
Third opinion related the name Bangi to a word ‘babangai’ which means stench odour that may arised from the dried fishes from the river or rice fields. In the east coast, the stench odour is termed as ‘busuk banga’ when pronouncing ‘bangai’ whereby the ending ‘I’ is silent.
Another opinion suggested that the name Bangi refers to the word ‘bangai’ which means wasted or discarded. This refers to descendants of royal families that has been discarded from the palace during the rift in Istana Klang or the Klang Castle. The spelling of Bangi in Arabic jawi with the alphabet ba, nga and yaa is pronounced as ‘bangi’ instead of ‘bangai’.
