Hotels in Singapore: The Complete Guide for Malaysian Travellers

Singapore stands as one of the most visited destinations for Malaysians, and for good reason. This dazzling city-state packs world-class attractions, Michelin-starred dining, spectacular architecture, and immaculate gardens into an area smaller than Kuala Lumpur. Whether you are making a quick weekend trip from Johor Bahru or a longer holiday escape, Singapore delivers an unmatched urban travel experience. With Traveloka, you can browse over 1,400 hotels in Singapore with prices starting from as low as RM 90 per night, making it one of the most accessible premium destinations in the region for Malaysian travellers.

The city-state's currency is the Singapore Dollar (SGD), and at the current exchange rate of approximately SGD 1 to RM 3.50, even mid-range stays in Singapore translate to excellent value when booked early through Traveloka's best price guarantee. The city's efficient MRT system, world-famous food scene, and seamless cleanliness make it an ideal destination for solo travellers, couples, families, and business visitors alike.

Best Areas to Stay in Singapore

Marina Bay & City Centre

The Marina Bay area is Singapore's crown jewel and home to iconic landmarks such as Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, and the Merlion. Staying in this district places you at the heart of the city's skyline and entertainment options. Hotels in this area typically range from RM 420 to RM 1,400 per night for luxury properties, though more affordable business hotels can be found from around RM 280 per night. This area is ideal for first-time visitors who want the quintessential Singapore experience.

Orchard Road

Orchard Road is Singapore's premier shopping belt and one of the most convenient locations for leisure travellers. The area is lined with luxury malls, international restaurants, and well-positioned hotels that offer easy access to the MRT. Expect hotel rates ranging from RM 350 to RM 900 per night for four- and five-star properties. This neighbourhood suits shoppers, families, and those wanting proximity to Singapore's retail heartland.

Chinatown & Tanjong Pagar

For budget-conscious Malaysian travellers, Chinatown and Tanjong Pagar offer excellent value without sacrificing connectivity. Budget and mid-range hotels in this area start from RM 90 to RM 250 per night, and the area is rich in heritage shophouses, affordable hawker food, and a thriving nightlife scene. The Tanjong Pagar MRT station connects you to the rest of Singapore in minutes.

Sentosa Island

Sentosa is Singapore's dedicated resort island, home to Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium, and pristine beaches. Resorts on Sentosa cater primarily to families and luxury seekers, with prices ranging from RM 500 to RM 2,000 per night. Staying on the island offers an immersive resort experience with all major attractions within walking distance.

Little India & Bugis

Little India and Bugis are culturally vibrant neighbourhoods offering a blend of heritage, street food, and affordable lodging. Hotels here range from RM 120 to RM 320 per night, making them popular with Malaysian visitors who appreciate the familiar flavours of Indian and Malay cuisines available nearby.

Best Time to Visit Singapore

Singapore is a year-round destination with a tropical climate and temperatures consistently between 25°C and 32°C. The island receives rainfall throughout the year, but the two main rainy seasons fall between November and January (northeast monsoon) and April to June (inter-monsoon). The driest and most pleasant months are generally February, March, July, and August, making these ideal for outdoor sightseeing and beach visits on Sentosa.

For Malaysian travellers, school holiday periods such as June and December are the most popular travel windows but also carry higher hotel rates. Booking through Traveloka during shoulder months like March or September can yield savings of 20 to 30 percent compared to peak periods. Major events such as the Singapore Grand Prix (September) and Chinese New Year (January/February) create high demand, so early booking is strongly recommended during these periods.

Getting to Singapore from Malaysia

Singapore is exceptionally accessible from Malaysia with multiple transport options. The most popular route for Malaysians is by road via the Causeway from Johor Bahru, which takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes depending on traffic and immigration queue times. Buses from KL Sentral and JB Larkin Terminal run frequently throughout the day. Driving and crossing via the Second Link (Tuas) is also an option from western Johor.

By air, flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2 to Changi Airport take approximately 50 minutes. Airlines including Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and Batik Air operate multiple daily flights, with fares as low as RM 80 one-way when booked in advance. From Penang, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching, regular direct flights to Changi are also available.

The KTM ETS train no longer runs cross-border directly, but travellers can take the train to JB Sentral and connect via the Johor–Singapore Causeway bus to Woodlands or by RTS Link (Rail Transit System) connecting JB Sentral directly to Woodlands North MRT station.

Top Attractions in Singapore

Gardens by the Bay is Singapore's showpiece park featuring the iconic Supertrees, the Flower Dome, and Cloud Forest conservatories. Entry to the outdoor gardens is free, while the conservatories charge a modest admission fee. The nightly Garden Rhapsody light show is a must-see and free of charge.

Universal Studios Singapore on Sentosa Island is Southeast Asia's first Universal Studios theme park and a top draw for families. Featuring zones themed around Hollywood, Madagascar, and Transformers, it promises a full day of entertainment.

Marina Bay Sands SkyPark Observation Deck offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and is accessible for a fee even if you are not staying at the hotel.

Singapore Zoo and Night Safari are world-renowned for their open-concept naturalistic enclosures. The Night Safari, in particular, is the world's first nocturnal wildlife park and a uniquely Singapore experience.

Sentosa Beaches — Palawan Beach, Siloso Beach, and Tanjong Beach — offer a refreshing beach escape within the city, complete with beach bars, water sports, and resort dining.

Hawker Centres such as Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, and Old Airport Road Food Centre showcase Singapore's UNESCO-recognised hawker culture and are essential stops for Malaysians who appreciate the shared culinary heritage of the region.

Tips for Malaysian Travellers Visiting Singapore

Malaysian citizens do not require a visa to enter Singapore and can stay for up to 30 days on a Social Visit Pass. Bring your Malaysian passport or MyKad (valid for entry via land checkpoints only). The Singapore Dollar is the local currency; most Malaysian banks offer competitive exchange rates, and money changers at Berjaya Times Square, Suria KLCC, and JB City Square typically offer better rates than airport counters.

Purchase an EZ-Link card upon arrival at any MRT station to enjoy seamless travel on buses and trains across the island. Singapore's MRT covers virtually every major tourist and shopping area, making it easy to get around without taxis. Mobile data users can also purchase SIM cards at Changi Airport or 7-Eleven outlets.

Note that Singapore's laws are strictly enforced. Chewing gum is restricted, jaywalking carries fines, and smoking is prohibited in most public areas. Respect these regulations to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Book all Singapore hotels through Traveloka for the best rates in Ringgit Malaysia with flexible payment options including FPX, credit cards, and Traveloka PayLater.

Which area in Singapore is best for first-time Malaysian visitors?

For first-time visitors, staying near Marina Bay or Orchard Road gives you the most central access to Singapore's top attractions. Marina Bay hotels start from around RM 280 per night and put you walking distance from Gardens by the Bay, the Merlion, and Marina Bay Sands. Orchard Road hotels from RM 350 per night are excellent for shoppers. Both areas are directly connected to the MRT network.

How do I get from Johor Bahru to Singapore hotels?

The easiest way is via the Johor–Singapore Causeway by bus (from JB Larkin Terminal or CW1) or by the RTS Link rail connection from JB Sentral to Woodlands North MRT station. From Woodlands, the MRT North-South Line connects directly to Orchard, City Hall, and Marina Bay stations. The journey takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours from JB city centre to central Singapore depending on immigration queues.

What is the best 5-star hotel in Singapore for a honeymoon?

Capella Singapore on Sentosa Island is widely regarded as one of Asia's finest luxury resorts and an ideal honeymoon choice. Set in restored colonial buildings surrounded by tropical gardens, rates start from approximately RM 1,400 per night. Raffles Hotel Singapore is another iconic choice with heritage suites from around RM 1,700 per night, offering the romance of a 19th-century landmark with modern luxury.

Is Singapore expensive for Malaysian travellers?

Singapore is generally more expensive than Malaysian cities, but it remains competitive as a regional destination. Budget travellers can manage on RM 200 to RM 350 per day including accommodation, food at hawker centres, and public transport. Mid-range travellers should budget RM 500 to RM 900 per day. Eating at hawker centres such as Maxwell Food Centre keeps food costs very reasonable, often at RM 15 to RM 30 per meal per person.
