I stayed at Ong Bun Pension House for a few hours on my first and penultimate day in my Iloilo visit. I'm a solo traveler and this has been a really good choice. The staff were kind and hospitable. The area is safe and near the city tourists spots. I tried the fan room and the executive room. With the fan room, you will be getting a simple room and a shared bathroom. I chose this room since I only stayed at the city for hours and then went to the Gigantes tour. If you have the budget to do so, just choose the executive room since it's clean and comfier due to the air conditioning and your own private bathroom. Also, they offer airport transfers. As of my visit, it costs around PHP600 and it's exclusively just you. Booking in the app has been incredibly convenient as apparently, this place is quite popular for last-minute reservations and some didn't have a room anymore due to the place being fully booked. So it's a necessity to book in advance rather than doing it last minute.

Iloilo City Proper: A Gateway to Visayan Charm and Culinary Delights

For the discerning international traveller seeking an authentic slice of the Philippines beyond the usual tourist trails, Iloilo City Proper presents a compelling proposition. This vibrant urban centre, located on the island of Panay, offers a unique blend of historical resonance, burgeoning modernity, and a culinary scene that consistently earns accolades nationwide. Unlike the bustling metropolises or the secluded island resorts, Iloilo City Proper provides a more grounded yet equally enriching experience, showcasing Filipino hospitality and culture in a setting that feels both accessible and distinct. It’s a destination that rewards curiosity with genuine interactions and a deeper understanding of the archipelago's diverse heritage.

The character of Iloilo City Proper is not monolithic; it unfolds across its various districts, each contributing a unique flavour to the visitor's journey. From the commercial pulse of areas like Danao and Ortiz, where business and retail thrive, to the more residential and tranquil enclaves such as Hipodromo and San Felix, the city offers a spectrum of environments. President Roxas and Maria Clara districts provide glimpses into local life and community hubs, while Nonoy and the broader Iloilo City Proper designation encompass a mix of established institutions and developing areas. Understanding these nuances is key to unlocking the city's full potential, allowing travellers to tailor their stay to their preferences, whether seeking vibrant city life or a more relaxed pace.

From a value perspective, Iloilo City Proper stands out as an attractive option for international visitors. For travellers from the United States, Europe, or India, where accommodation costs can be significantly higher, Iloilo City Proper represents an opportunity to experience Filipino culture and comfort without straining the travel budget. This affordability extends to dining, activities, and local transport, making it an accessible yet rewarding destination for those who appreciate quality experiences at reasonable prices.

The accommodation landscape in Iloilo City Proper is diverse, catering to a wide range of preferences and budgets. For instance, the People's Hotel, a 2-star establishment in the Hipodromo area, offers a glimpse into the city's more accessible lodging options, often featuring amenities that appeal to a broad spectrum of travellers. For those looking to secure their accommodation and plan their itinerary, it's advisable to book hotel rooms in advance, especially during peak seasons, to ensure availability and potentially better rates.

Ultimately, Iloilo City Proper is a destination that resonates with a variety of international travellers. American visitors might appreciate the blend of historical sites and modern conveniences, finding it a less overwhelming introduction to the Philippines than larger, more chaotic cities. European travellers, often drawn to cultural heritage, will find ample opportunities to explore colonial architecture and local traditions. Indian travellers can find comfort in the familiar flavours of Filipino cuisine, which shares some commonalities with Indian dishes, and will appreciate the excellent value for money. For travellers from African nations, Iloilo City Proper offers a welcoming and culturally rich experience, showcasing a different facet of Asian urban life.
