I stayed at Ong Bun Pension House for a few hours on my first and penultimate day in my Iloilo visit. I'm a solo traveler and this has been a really good choice. The staff were kind and hospitable. The area is safe and near the city tourists spots. I tried the fan room and the executive room. With the fan room, you will be getting a simple room and a shared bathroom. I chose this room since I only stayed at the city for hours and then went to the Gigantes tour. If you have the budget to do so, just choose the executive room since it's clean and comfier due to the air conditioning and your own private bathroom. Also, they offer airport transfers. As of my visit, it costs around PHP600 and it's exclusively just you. Booking in the app has been incredibly convenient as apparently, this place is quite popular for last-minute reservations and some didn't have a room anymore due to the place being fully booked. So it's a necessity to book in advance rather than doing it last minute.

When exploring Iloilo City Proper, maintaining a respectful demeanour is key. Dress codes are generally casual, but it's advisable to wear modest attire when visiting religious sites or government buildings; shorts and sleeveless shirts might be frowned upon in such places. Photography is usually permitted, but always ask for permission before taking close-up photos of individuals, especially in more traditional settings. Queuing culture is generally observed, and patience is a virtue, particularly in busy markets or public transport. Embracing these simple practices ensures a smoother and more harmonious experience for travellers in the Philippines.

Safety in Iloilo City Proper is generally good, with the city being considered one of the more peaceful urban centres in the Philippines. However, as with any travel destination, exercising common sense precautions is advised. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas like markets or bus terminals. For transportation, stick to reputable taxi services or the widely used ride-hailing app, Grab, which offers transparent pricing. Having offline maps and essential contact numbers readily available on your phone can also be a lifesaver for navigating the city and ensuring your safety.

In case of emergencies in Iloilo City Proper, the local emergency number for police and ambulance services is typically 911, consistent with national standards in the Philippines. Tourist police units may also be available in key areas to assist visitors. For travellers from abroad, knowing the contact details of your respective embassy or consulate in the Philippines is crucial. For Filipino travellers, understanding the support available through agencies like the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is important, though less relevant for domestic travel within the Philippines itself. Always consider travel insurance for peace of mind.

Getting to Iloilo City Proper and Getting Around

Reaching Iloilo City Proper from other parts of the Philippines is straightforward, primarily facilitated by air travel. Major domestic hubs like Manila (NAIA/MNL) and Cebu (CEB) offer frequent flights to Iloilo International Airport (ILO), which serves the city. Flights from Manila typically take around 1 hour and 15 minutes, while those from Cebu are shorter, around 1 hour. Prices can vary significantly based on booking time and airline, but budget travellers can often find round-trip tickets for as low as ₱3,000-₱5,000 when booked in advance. For those looking to secure the best fares, it's advisable to book flight tickets well in advance.

Once you arrive at Iloilo International Airport (ILO), located about 20-30 kilometers from the city centre, several options are available to get to your accommodation in Iloilo City Proper. Airport taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available and offer a convenient, albeit slightly more expensive, transfer. For a more budget-friendly option, you can take a van or bus service that runs regularly between the airport and various points in the city. Within Iloilo City Proper itself, the primary mode of public transport is the jeepney, a colourful and iconic Filipino vehicle, which plies numerous routes across the city. Tricycles are common for shorter distances, and taxis are also available, though less ubiquitous than jeepneys.

The best time to visit Iloilo City Proper generally falls during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is pleasant with less rainfall and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and historical sites. This period, however, also coincides with peak tourist season, meaning higher hotel prices and larger crowds. For travellers seeking a balance of good weather and fewer tourists, the shoulder months of November or April can be ideal. The wet season, from May to October, brings more rain but also lower prices and a more local feel, which might appeal to budget-conscious travellers or those seeking a quieter experience in the Philippines.

Before embarking on your journey to Iloilo City Proper, a few pre-departure preparations will ensure a smooth trip. The local currency is the Philippine Peso (PHP). While major establishments might accept credit cards, it's essential to carry cash for smaller vendors, local transport, and markets. SIM cards with data plans are readily available at the airport or in local shops, offering affordable connectivity. Essential apps to download include a reliable map application (like Google Maps), a translation app if needed, and ride-hailing apps like Grab. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the Philippines.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Iloilo City Proper, which is within the Philippines, no visa is required as it is a domestic travel destination. Philippine citizens have unrestricted access to all regions within their own country, including Iloilo City Proper. The primary document needed is a valid Philippine passport, though for domestic travel, other valid government-issued IDs are often accepted by airlines and hotels. It is always advisable to carry at least one form of identification when travelling within the Philippines.

As Iloilo City Proper is a domestic destination for Philippine passport holders, there are no specific visa application processes, required documents beyond standard identification, or fees associated with entering the region. However, it is always prudent for travellers to ensure their passport remains valid and to check for any specific airline or hotel policies regarding identification requirements for domestic travel within the Philippines.

While visa requirements are not applicable for Philippine passport holders travelling domestically to Iloilo City Proper, it is always recommended to stay informed about any potential travel advisories or local regulations that may be in place.
