Silangit Airport (DTB): Gateway to Lake Toba

Raja Sisingamangaraja XII Airport, still widely known as Silangit Airport, is the closest airport with jet service to Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Indonesia. The vast volcanic lake and Samosir Island in its centre are the main reasons most travellers fly here. The airport also serves the town of Balige and the surrounding Batak highlands.

The airfield was first built as a military airbase in the 1940s and sat unused for years after the war. It was later rebuilt for civilian flights, and it later took the name of Sisingamangaraja XII, the Batak king and Indonesian national hero who resisted Dutch colonial rule. The earlier name, Silangit, remains in everyday use.

Where Is Silangit Airport and How Far Is Lake Toba?

The airport stands in Siborongborong, North Tapanuli Regency, on the high ground south of the lake. Balige, on Lake Toba's southern shore, is a short drive away. Parapat, the lakeside town where many visitors catch ferries to Samosir, is roughly 76 km by road, which usually means a drive of around two hours.

Terminal and Facilities at Silangit Airport

A newer, larger terminal has greatly increased the airport's passenger capacity. Travellers will find parking, an ATM centre, a prayer room, restrooms, flight information screens and customer service desks. The 2,650-metre runway can handle narrow-body jets such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.

Airlines and Routes from Silangit

Flights from DTB are domestic. Carriers including Citilink, Super Air Jet and Indonesia AirAsia connect Silangit with Jakarta, and there is also a route to Batam. Jakarta is the main hub for onward connections across Indonesia.

The airport briefly held international status and saw charter flights to Singapore, but those services stopped and it is now a domestic airport.

• DAMRI bus: DAMRI runs scheduled buses from the airport towards Parapat and Ajibata port, with only a few departures a day.
• Private car and driver: The quickest and most flexible option, especially if you are heading on to Tuktuk on Samosir.
• Car rental: Rental cars are available for travellers who want to explore the lake at their own pace.

Exploring Lake Toba from Silangit

Lake Toba is the largest lake in Indonesia and fills the caldera of an ancient supervolcano. Samosir Island is known for its traditional Batak houses and relaxed lakeside villages such as Tuktuk. From Parapat and Ajibata, ferries cross regularly to the island.

Travel Tips for Silangit Airport

Book ground transport before you land, because bus departures are few and taxis are limited. If your flight lands late in the day, consider spending the night in Balige and continuing to the lake the next morning. Highland weather can be cool, so pack a light jacket.
