Laoag International Airport (LAO) serves Laoag City, the capital of Ilocos Norte on the north-west tip of Luzon in the Philippines. It is the main air gateway for visitors heading to the beaches, churches and sand dunes of the Ilocos region. The airport grew out of an American-era airfield in Gabu and has served civilian flights since after the Second World War.
The airport stands near the mouth of the Padsan River, next to the La Paz Sand Dunes, a short drive west of the city proper. It is roughly 7 to 8 km from central Laoag, and most trips into town take around 15 to 25 minutes.
One terminal building handles both passengers and cargo. It has check-in counters, a departure area, snack bars and souvenir stalls, as well as immigration desks because the airport is designated for international flights. The terminal was expanded to handle more domestic and international passengers, and the runway can accept wide-body aircraft.
Regular scheduled flights connect Laoag with Manila, operated by Cebu Pacific and PAL Express. The flight takes a little over an hour, making it a quick alternative to the long road trip north. Smaller operators may run light-aircraft services to nearby islands. International flights are limited. Check the latest schedule for the routes available on your dates.
Right beside the airport, the La Paz Sand Dunes are known for 4x4 rides and sandboarding. In the city you can see the Sinking Bell Tower, while Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage baroque church, is a short drive south. Further north, Pagudpud's beaches, the Bangui windmills and Cape Bojeador Lighthouse are popular stops. Vigan's historic town lies further south in Ilocos Sur.
Since most flights go to and from Manila, book return seats early during Philippine holiday periods. Typhoon season can disrupt services, so keep an eye on weather updates and your airline's notices if you travel in the wetter months.
