Sukhothai Airport is in Sawankhalok District, south of Sawankhalok town. It is outside Sukhothai city, between the two main historical parks.
The drive to Sukhothai Historical Park takes around 40 minutes. Si Satchanalai Historical Park is about half an hour away in the other direction.
Bangkok Airways, which also owns the airport, operates flights between Sukhothai and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.
There are no international flights from Sukhothai, but you can connect onward at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi.
The terminal is a group of open-air pavilions in traditional Sukhothai style, surrounded by gardens and lotus ponds.
The grounds include a small museum, an organic farm and a restaurant serving produce grown on site.
Many hotels near the old city offer transfers, and taxis can be arranged. Book ahead, as the town is some distance away.
There are few flights each day, so book early for festivals such as Loy Krathong and for long weekends. Set a Price Alert on Traveloka to follow fare changes.
Sukhothai Airport (THS) is a privately owned airport in Sukhothai Province, northern Thailand. Bangkok Airways built it and opened it in 1996. It serves visitors heading to the ruins of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, two well-known historical parks.
Unlike most regional airports, it feels more like a garden resort than a transport hub.
The airport is in Sawankhalok District, about 15 minutes' drive south of Sawankhalok town. It is not in Sukhothai city itself. Si Satchanalai Historical Park lies around half an hour to the north, while Sukhothai Historical Park is roughly 40 minutes to the south.
The terminal is built as a series of open-air pavilions in traditional Sukhothai style, set among lotus ponds and gardens. The grounds also hold a small museum, an organic farm and a restaurant that uses produce from the farm, so a short wait here can be pleasant.
Bangkok Airways operates the route at THS, linking Sukhothai with Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Flights run daily. From Suvarnabhumi you can connect onward across Thailand and abroad. Check the current timetable, as departure times can change.
Sukhothai was the seat of an early Thai kingdom, and its temple ruins are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that also includes Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet. Cycling between the lotus ponds and chedis of the old city is a favourite way to explore. The Loy Krathong festival is a special time to visit.
With few flights each day, it pays to book early, especially around festivals and long weekends. Arrange your transfer before you land, since Sukhothai town is a fair distance from the terminal. Start temple visits early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
