Phrae is a town under the Saban Mueang in northern Thailand, capital of Phrae region. The town inhabits tambon Nai Wiang of Mueang Phrae area. It has an area of 9.1 kilometres2 and a population of 17,972 based on 2005 surveys. Phrae is 555.5 km north of Bangkok by road. Phrae situated on the Yom River, at an elevation of 160 metres (522 ft). The town is mainly built on the east side of the river, but some outlying parts are constructed on the west side of the river and are linked to the main part by bridges. There are hills both to the west and east of the town such as the Phlueng Range to the east are higher, reaching about 801 metres (2,600 ft) above sea level, whereas the Phi Pan Nam Range to the west is about 501 metres (1,600 ft) above sea level.
