Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. It is a perfect destination if you want to experience the hustle and bustle of life in this city never sleeps. Jakarta is known as the busiest city in Indonesia and has the largest population.
The history of the megapolis begins from a small port called “Sunda Kelapa” which is located at the estuary of the Ciliwung River which is believed to exist in the days of Hindu civilization as early as the 5th century. The port has received numerous visits from traders all around the world and the first traders to arrive was the Portuguese. The Portuguese immigrants were later granted permission to set up a barrier at the Sunda Kelapa’s estuary in the 16th century. Prince Fatahillah from Cirebon and Java felt unhappy when the country was colonized. Therefore, they acted to expel the Portuguese in 1527 and changed the name of Sunda Kelapa to Jayakarta which means 'Victory City'. However, Jayakarta was unable to survive for a long time because in the year 1619, the city was captured by the East Indies Syarikah and they had changed its name to Batavia. Batavia had reached its peak time when the city became the SHTI administration centre and they have become the most important city in the country. However, during the Second World War, Batavia had fallen into the hands of the Japanese army and renamed it as Jakarta to win the hearts of the local people. The name of Jakarta remains until today and since then, they have gone through various aspects of evolution to become the capital city of Indonesia.
