Denmark is a country in Scandinavia and located at south-west of Sweden and south of Norway and also bordered to the south of Germany. The capital and the largest city in Demark is Copenhagen. Denmark occupies an area of 42,924 square kilometres and a population of 5.8 million as recorded in 2018.
Denmark is one of the oldest states in Europe and the oldest kingdom in the world. In the 9th century, Denmark was divided into different kingdoms, and it became one in the 10th century. The Danes raided other parts of Europe such as England and Ireland to take people as slaves and created the first towns in Ireland, Limerick, Cork and Dublin.
The Danish part of England was called the Danelaw, and over the following decades, the English conquered it piece by piece. The English and the Danes settled down and lived together peacefully. However, in 1002, Ethelred the Unready, king of England ordered the massacre of Danish settlers. Among the dead were relatives of the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard.
During the 13th century, Waldemar II conquered Schleswig-Holstein, Pomerania, Mecklenburg, and Estonia and re-established the nation as a high power in Northern Europe. After that, there was a city between the king and the nobles. Christopher II was forced to make significant concessions to the nobles and clergy at the expense of royal power, and Waldemar IV succeeded in restoring royal authority and his daughter Margaret I created the Kalmar Union, which included Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the Faeroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and part of Finland.
In 1866, a new Constitution was adopted for the reduced area of Denmark after its defeat at the hands of Prussia in 1864. This relationship was significant for the constitutional development of Denmark. After the World War in 1915, a constitution had been made. Denmark joined the European Community in 1973. Denmark became committed to European integration under the Prime Minister, Paul Schulter in 1982. Currently, Denmark is one of the economically competitive countries in the world.
The primary and official language used in Denmark is Danish. Besides that, there are also other languages used to communicate such as Faroese, Greenlandic and German. Danes speak English as a second language with a high level of proficiency. German is also recognised as minority language used in the area of the former South Jutland Country which was a part of Germany Empire. On top of that, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish languages are also minority languages. Majority of the Denmark population is Christian and mostly are the members of Church of Denmark and Church of the Faroe Islands. Around 75.3% of the total population is registered under the Church of Denmark in January 2018.
For cuisines, the traditional dish of Denmark comprised mainly of meat, fish and potatoes. Besides that, Denmark is widely known for Smorrebrod or Danish open sandwich with piled of delicacies such as slices of salmon, eggs and meat. It is one of only seven roller coasters worldwide which have a brakeman on board every train. Nyhan is a canal that was built to connect Kongens Nytorv to the harbour and one of the most visited places during the summer. It was originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. There are many old houses and pubs packed with sailors and ladies. Currently, the old houses have undergone significant renovation and restaurants are built. One of the famous dining places is Bridge Street Kitchen that serves delicious street food, and there is always an exciting show at Royal Danish Playhouse. This attraction has been featured in numerous films such as The Danish Girl, A Lesson in Love and Hidden Fear.
Copenhagen Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe and was founded in 1859. Covers an area of 11 hectares, it is located in the Frederiksberg area and houses over 3000 animals that are divided into 264 unknown species. Among the animals can be found here are elephants, hippos, lions, monkeys and polar bears. Besides that, there are also snakes, crocodiles, marmosets, hornbills, dwarf deer, free-flying birds and butterflies. In 2008, Copenhagen Zoo opened a new elephant house designed by Norman Foster. It has one of the best elephant facilities in the world which comprised of big water tomb for the elephants to bathe themselves. Besides that, The Arctic Ring was also opened in 2013 where visitors can get close to polar bears, North Atlantic birds and seals. Also, you too can pat the African dwarf goats and meet the farm animals at the Zoo stage.
