A 10-minute walk from Gangnam Station. Nearby, there are convenience shops. Next to the hotel is a very nice and affordable Korean BBQ shop that deserves a dinner visit. The room comes with a washing machine and a Samsung standing steam and iron machine, which is very convenient for light travelers like me who bring the least number of clothing items. Counter staff are friendly and prompt in assistance, too. Daily room service can be coordinated through WhatsApp.

More about hotels in Iraq

Best Areas to Stay in Hotel in Iraq

Iraq, a land of profound historical significance and diverse cultural landscapes, offers a varied accommodation experience across its different cities and regions. For Singaporean travellers, understanding these distinctions is crucial, as the choice of where to stay can significantly shape the entire journey. Whether you're drawn to the ancient wonders, the spiritual heartlands, or the developing urban centres, each area presents a unique atmosphere and set of attractions, catering to different travel styles and preferences.

Baghdad

Baghdad, the storied capital, pulses with a dynamic energy that blends its ancient legacy with the realities of a modern, developing metropolis. For Singaporean visitors, it offers a deep dive into the heart of Iraqi culture, history, and commerce. The city is a place of contrasts, where bustling souks selling traditional crafts and spices sit alongside modern cafes and business districts. It's best suited for travellers keen on exploring significant historical sites, understanding contemporary Iraqi life, and experiencing the resilience of a city that has long been a global centre.

From Baghdad, access to iconic historical landmarks like the Abbasid Palace and the National Museum of Iraq is relatively straightforward. The city is a hub for exploring the remnants of ancient Mesopotamia, with day trips to sites like Babylon and Samarra being popular. Culinary exploration is a must, with traditional Iraqi cuisine readily available in local restaurants and street food stalls. The city is served by Baghdad International Airport, providing connections to regional and international destinations, and offers various transport options for navigating its sprawling urban landscape.

Najaf

Najaf stands as one of the holiest cities in Shia Islam, exuding an atmosphere of profound spirituality and devotion. For Singaporean travellers, particularly those interested in religious tourism or understanding the cultural significance of the region, Najaf offers a unique and deeply moving experience. The city's character is defined by its sacred sites, particularly the Imam Ali Holy Shrine, which draws millions of pilgrims annually. It's a place of quiet contemplation and vibrant religious life, offering a stark contrast to the secular bustle of other Iraqi cities.

The primary draw in Najaf is, of course, the Imam Ali Holy Shrine, a site of immense historical and spiritual importance. Beyond the shrine, visitors can explore the Wadi al-Salam cemetery, one of the largest and oldest cemeteries in the world, also holding significant religious meaning.

The city offers a chance to witness religious ceremonies and immerse oneself in the devout atmosphere. While not a typical tourist destination for leisure, Najaf provides a profound cultural and spiritual insight, with local eateries serving traditional fare. Najaf International Airport facilitates arrivals, and local taxis are the primary mode of transport within the city.

Erbil

Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, presents a distinct and welcoming face of the country, often characterized by its ancient citadel and a more relaxed, modern atmosphere compared to some southern cities. For Singaporean travellers, Erbil offers a glimpse into Kurdish culture, a rich history stretching back millennia, and a sense of burgeoning modernity. The city is known for its relative stability and a growing tourism infrastructure, making it an accessible entry point for those exploring northern Iraq. It's ideal for travellers interested in history, culture, and experiencing a different facet of Iraqi life.

The magnificent Erbil Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the undisputed highlight, offering panoramic views and a journey through centuries of history. Beyond the citadel, the bustling bazaar provides a vibrant shopping experience for local crafts and textiles. The city also boasts modern amenities, including shopping malls and a growing number of restaurants serving both Kurdish and international cuisine. Erbil International Airport connects the city to various global hubs, and within the city, taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available for exploration. Visitors can also book attraction tickets for local sites and tours.

Basra

Basra, situated in southern Iraq near the Persian Gulf, is a city with a rich maritime history and a strategic importance that has shaped its identity over centuries. For Singaporean travellers, Basra offers a unique perspective on Iraq, focusing on its connection to the sea, its historical role as a trading port, and its distinct southern culture. The city is known for its palm groves, its canals, and a more humid climate, providing a different environmental experience from other parts of the country. It appeals to those interested in history, trade routes, and experiencing a less-visited, yet significant, Iraqi city.

Key attractions in Basra include the Shatt al-Arab waterway, the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, and the historic Corniche. Exploring the old city centre reveals architectural remnants of its past as a vital trading hub. Basra also offers insights into Iraq's oil industry, a significant part of its modern economy. The local cuisine often features seafood, reflecting its coastal location. Basra International Airport provides air connectivity, and navigating the city is typically done via taxis. The city's proximity to Kuwait also offers potential for cross-border exploration for some travellers.

Kirkuk

Kirkuk, a city with a complex and layered history, is situated in a region known for its significant oil reserves and its diverse ethnic makeup, including Arabs, Kurds, Turkmen, and Assyrians. For Singaporean travellers interested in understanding the intricate socio-political landscape and historical narratives of Iraq, Kirkuk offers a unique, albeit sensitive, destination. The city's ancient citadel, Kirkuk Castle, stands as a reflection of its long and storied past, hinting at the various civilizations that have called this region home. It's a place for those seeking a deeper, more nuanced understanding of Iraq's heritage.

The primary historical site is the ancient Kirkuk Castle, which offers a vantage point over the city and whispers tales of its past inhabitants. The city's museums, though perhaps less developed than in major capitals, can provide insights into the region's archaeological significance.

Exploring local markets can offer a glimpse into the daily lives of its diverse communities. The culinary scene reflects the blend of cultures present, with various regional specialties available. While Kirkuk has an airport, its connectivity might be more limited, often requiring travel via other major Iraqi cities. Understanding the local context and current conditions is advisable before planning a visit.

Tooz Khurmato

Tooz Khurmato, located in the Saladin Governorate, is a town that embodies the rich cultural tapestry of Iraq, historically known for its significant Turkmen population and its agricultural produce, particularly dates. For Singaporean travellers seeking to move beyond the major cities and experience a more localized Iraqi setting, Tooz Khurmato offers a chance to engage with a different community and understand the nuances of regional life. The town's character is shaped by its agricultural roots and the traditions of its people, providing a more intimate glimpse into everyday Iraqi existence.

While Tooz Khurmato may not boast major tourist attractions in the conventional sense, its appeal lies in its authenticity and the opportunity to witness local life. Visitors can explore the agricultural landscapes, perhaps visiting local farms or markets where produce, including dates, is traded. Engaging with the local community, with respect and openness, can offer valuable cultural insights. The town's culinary offerings will likely reflect traditional Iraqi and Turkmen dishes. Travel to Tooz Khurmato would typically be undertaken from larger nearby cities, and local transport within the town would be informal, relying on taxis or shared vehicles.

Food & Dining

A Taste of Iraq: Culinary Journeys for Singaporean Palates

What to Eat and Where to Find It

The culinary landscape of Iraq is as rich and varied as its history, offering a delightful array of flavours that are distinct from what Singaporean travellers might be accustomed to. A cornerstone of Iraqi cuisine is *Masgouf*, a method of preparing carp, typically grilled over an open fire, often seasoned with tamarind and served with a side of onions and bread. This dish, deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric, represents the country's connection to its rivers and traditional cooking methods. Its smoky flavour and tender texture make it a memorable introduction to Iraqi gastronomy.

Finding authentic *Masgouf* and other Iraqi specialties is an adventure in itself. In Baghdad, the banks of the Tigris River are dotted with restaurants specializing in this iconic dish, offering diners a picturesque setting. For Muslim travellers from Singapore, rest assured that Iraq is predominantly a Muslim country, and halal food is widely available. Many restaurants clearly indicate their halal status, and traditional Iraqi dishes often rely on lamb, chicken, and fish, prepared according to Islamic dietary laws. Exploring local markets and smaller eateries can lead to discovering hidden culinary gems that are both delicious and compliant with halal requirements.

The diversity of Iraq's cuisine is also evident when comparing regional specialties. While Baghdad might be known for its grilled fish and rich stews, the northern Kurdish regions offer distinct flavours, often featuring grilled meats, hearty breads, and a variety of dairy products. Basra, with its coastal proximity, presents a seafood-centric menu, incorporating fresh catches prepared with local spices. This regional variation means that travelling through Iraq offers not just a cultural journey but also a gastronomic exploration, with each area providing unique tastes and culinary traditions to discover.

For Singaporean travellers, navigating dining in Iraq involves a few practical considerations. Meal times generally align with Western patterns, with lunch being the main meal of the day. Tipping is not as rigidly structured as in some Western countries; a small gratuity for exceptional service is appreciated but not always expected. Prices can vary significantly, from very affordable street food to more upscale restaurant dining. Familiarizing oneself with common Arabic phrases for ordering food can enhance the experience, and many establishments are accustomed to assisting tourists, making the dining process generally smooth and enjoyable.

Navigating Iraq: Cultural Nuances and Practical Safety Tips

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Hotel in Iraq

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enriching visit to Iraq. One of the most significant aspects for Singaporean travellers to be aware of is the importance of hospitality and respect for elders. Greetings are often warm and extended, and it's customary to accept offers of tea or coffee, as refusing can be seen as impolite. Dress code is also important; while major cities are becoming more accustomed to diverse attire, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is generally advisable, especially when visiting religious sites or more conservative areas, to show respect for local traditions.

When visiting religious sites, such as the holy shrines in Najaf or Karbala, adherence to specific etiquette is paramount. Modest dress is strictly required, often involving covering the head for women and ensuring full coverage of arms and legs for both men and women. Photography may be restricted in certain areas, particularly inside prayer halls, and it's always best to ask for permission before taking pictures of people. Maintaining a respectful demeanour, speaking softly, and being mindful of prayer times are crucial for a positive experience at these sacred locations.

Practical safety measures in Iraq are similar to those in many developing countries. Singaporean travellers should remain aware of their surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. Keeping valuables secure and avoiding overt displays of wealth is advisable. For transportation, while traditional taxis are available, ride-sharing apps are becoming more prevalent in major cities, offering a convenient and often safer option. It's wise to use reputable services and confirm the driver and vehicle details before starting a journey.

In terms of emergencies, knowing the local emergency numbers is important. For immediate assistance, dialling 112 for police or 104 for ambulance services is recommended. For Singaporean citizens travelling abroad, it is always prudent to register your travel plans with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. While there isn't a Singaporean embassy in Iraq, the Singapore High Commission in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, often handles consular affairs for Iraq. Ensuring you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen circumstances is also a vital step before departure.

Travel Guide to Hotel in Iraq

Your Essential Travel Guide to Iraq from Singapore

Getting to Hotel in Iraq and Getting Around

For Singaporean travellers planning a trip to Iraq, the primary mode of international travel is by air. Flights from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to major Iraqi cities like Baghdad (BGW) or Erbil (EBL) typically involve at least one layover, often in hubs such as Dubai, Doha, or Istanbul.

Airlines like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines are common carriers for this route. The total travel time can range from 10 to 15 hours or more, depending on the layover duration. While direct flights are rare, booking in advance through platforms like Traveloka can help secure competitive fares, with prices varying significantly based on the season and booking time. It's always advisable to book flight tickets well in advance for better options.

Once in Iraq, intercity travel can be accomplished through a combination of domestic flights, buses, and private car services. Domestic flights connect major cities like Baghdad, Basra, and Erbil, offering a quicker way to cover long distances. For more budget-conscious travellers or those who prefer a ground-level view, intercity buses operate between most major urban centres, though journeys can be lengthy and comfort levels may vary.

Private car hire with a driver is also a popular option, offering flexibility and convenience, especially for exploring areas outside city limits or for groups. The road infrastructure is developing, and travel times can be affected by traffic and road conditions.

The best time to visit Iraq from Singapore generally falls during the cooler months, from October to April. During this period, temperatures are more moderate, making it pleasant for sightseeing and exploring historical sites. The summer months, from May to September, can be extremely hot, particularly in the southern regions, with temperatures frequently exceeding 40°C. Visiting during the shoulder seasons, such as spring or autumn, can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer crowds, potentially leading to better hotel rates and a more relaxed travel experience.

Before embarking on your journey to Iraq, a few pre-departure preparations are essential for Singaporean travellers. The local currency is the Iraqi Dinar (IQD). While major hotels and some businesses may accept US dollars, it's advisable to carry some local currency for smaller purchases and in areas with limited electronic payment options. Exchange rates can fluctuate, so checking the current rate against the Singapore Dollar (SGD) is recommended. Obtaining a local SIM card upon arrival can be cost-effective for staying connected, and essential apps to consider include mapping services, translation tools, and ride-sharing applications if available in your destination city.

Visa Requirements for Singaporean Citizens

For Singaporean passport holders planning a trip to Iraq, understanding the visa requirements is a crucial step in the travel preparation process. As of recent information, Singaporean citizens are generally required to obtain a visa to enter Iraq. This typically involves applying for the visa in advance through the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Singapore or at an Iraqi diplomatic mission in a neighbouring country. The visa application process ensures that travellers meet the entry criteria set by the Iraqi government for tourism, business, or other purposes.

The application for an Iraqi visa usually requires a completed application form, a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity, recent passport-sized photographs, and sometimes an invitation letter or proof of accommodation. Depending on the visa type, additional documentation may be requested. It is highly recommended for travellers to contact the nearest Iraqi embassy or consulate well in advance of their intended travel dates to confirm the exact requirements, application procedures, and any associated fees, as these can be subject to change.

Visa policies are dynamic and can be updated by governments without extensive notice. Therefore, it is imperative for all Singaporean citizens intending to travel to Iraq to verify the most current visa regulations directly with the official diplomatic representation of Iraq. This due diligence will help prevent any last-minute complications or issues at the point of entry, ensuring a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience. Checking the official embassy website or contacting them directly is the most reliable way to obtain accurate and up-to-date information before you book flight tickets.
