Hari Raya Haji 2022

THE SPIRIT OF SHARING IN HARI RAYA HAJI IN SINGAPORE

The day, often referred to as the Festival of Sacrifice, falls 70 days after the holy month of Ramadan, and this year it falls on July 10 or the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah. Its celebration normally lasts for up to a couple of days. Historically, Hari Raya Haji is a Muslim celebration of the day the Prophet Ibrahim almost sacrificed his son, Ismail, as an offering to God. At the last minute, God intervened and told him to provide a sheep for sacrifice instead of his son. Following that, God then asked the father and son to construct a praying monument in Mecca, in which all Muslims around the world orient to these days.

In practice, Hari Raya Haji is always synonymous with the korban or sacrifice. Livestock such as sheep, goats, and cows will be sacrificed by those who are financially able, as a moment to remember what God instructed to Ismail. The meat from the sacrificed livestock are then distributed to the less fortunate. It is meant to remind the devotees that there are people who still need help and that they should share with each other.

Hari Raya Haji in Singapore this year, however, will be a little bit different, as Covid-19 changes the landscape of it. The country imports zero livestock, so the sacrifice will mostly be conducted away from the country. Around 42 mosques have organized a sacrifice away in Australia, in which the meat will then be frozen and sent to Singapore to be distributed to those who are in need.

All about Food

As Hari Raya Haji, also known as the Greater Eid or Eid al-Bakr, is about sharing the food with the less fortunate, the day is always cherished with delicious cooking – on top of the hospitality of the devotees. Speaking of cooking, Singapore also hosts one of the biggest food festivals in the country, right when the public holiday takes place. The Singapore Food Festival first started in 1994, is a week-long event which is organized by the Singapore Tourism Board. It aims to portray Singapore as the center of culinary diversity. Numerous multicultural dishes can be found in the event that takes place all over Singapore. The Singapore Food Festival offers you a taste of Singapore’s top culinary options. What makes it better is the fact that the entry is free, except for the food you purchase. If this does not speak of culinary adventure enough for you, try visiting the’50 Cents Fest!’ at Chinatown Food Street and ‘One Farrer’s Food Street’. You will be sent back in time to face the classic local delights. Not only that, a string of top international chefs will graze the kitchen and show you what they have in store.

Now here is the crème de la crème to Singapore’s culinary stock. Do not call yourself foodies before you have got the chance to drop by Hjh Maimunah. Don’t be fooled by the simple and local name. It is a Michelin Bib gourmand-listed eatery, specializing in nasi padang. Originally from Indonesia, the foodhas been known across the globe. Basically, it is steamed rice served with meat and veggies. What makes it special is the fact that it is so rich in flavors that one of its dish options, rendang, was even listed on the top 10 of the world’s most delicious foods.
