Hari Raya Puasa 2022

THE WHAT AND WHERE OF HARI RAYA PUASA: SINGAPORE EDITION

The fasting period is underway and Hari Raya Puasa is already on the horizon. The public holiday this year will fall on May 3rd, 2022, in which Muslim people from all over the globe celebrate with festivity and get-together. Normally, during Hari Raya Puasa, Muslim people will travel and visit each other’s house. But this is the second year in a row that Covid has interfered and travel will be limited or restricted.

That leaves a big question as to how the public holiday will be celebrated. Singapore boasts 14.03 percent Muslim residents. That is roughly 459.890 people out of a total population of 3.2 million people. This means that like it or not, there will be a handful of people who will be looking for options of where to go and what to do on Hari Raya day. The number still excludes those who do not celebrate Hari Raya Puasa but get to enjoy the public holiday.

Where to Go, What to Do During Hari Raya Puasa

If the question still lingers and you still find yourself without a destination or itineraries, here are some of the things you can do during Hari Raya Puasa:

1. Festivals and Bazaars

It is still somewhat a bit new but the trend and circumstances these days tend to accommodate festivities in a virtual manner. That being said, the festivals and bazaars that are identical with Hari Raya Puasa are no longer taking place in public places (at least some of them).

One of the most well-known festivals is the Geylang Serai Light Up. The ‘offline’ festival takes place in Geylang Serai, precisely at Sims Avenue and Changi Road, in between Paya Lebar and Eunos MRT stations. However, people can still enjoy the festival without having to visit the place.

The festival offers an online bazaar and weekly cultural programs that anybody can enjoy. You can simply log in to your phone and enjoy the festivity with the whole family.

Similar to that of the festival of light, Kampong Gelam also offers the Cahaya Ramadan festival, in which the entire area will be decorated and illuminated during the Ramadan period. Not only that, Cahaya Ramadan also provides a 360 virtual tour of the neighborhood, along with other interesting items such as contests, edutainment videos, and documentary series. This certainly brings up the Islamic nuance that Hari Raya Puasa is representing.

2. Non-Islamic Events

If you are one of the persons who do not celebrate Hari Raya Puasa but you get to enjoy the public holiday and you are planning to enjoy the break the best you can, try these two excursions that might interest you. The first one is the Sea Show at the Singapore Maritime Gallery, Marina Bay. You can take your family and kids with you as it offers a family-friendly experience in which the gallery can change into a labyrinth of kaleidoscopic corners, featuring larger-than-life artworks, animations, and installations.

But if you are more into artistic/contemporary stuff, do check out the Once Upon a Time on the Orient Express at Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay. It is a contemporary art exhibition, in which you can get immersed into numerous stops of exotic and classical approaches around the globe.

3. One-stop App

Now if you can’t decide which one of the two options above you want to take, or if you don’t know what is the best way to get a ticket to those places, or even if you don’t want to spend you Hari Raya Puasa in the places or attractions mentioned above, there is always Traveloka who can assist you with new recommendations. Get a ticket to an attraction you’d love to see or to a hotel you’d love to stay only in Traveloka.
