Lion Air (JT/LNI) is an Indonesian hybrid carrier, a combination of low-cost (LCC) and medium service airline. Currently, Lion Air is known for serving the most route combination and flight schedule throughout the cities in Indonesia.
As a hybrid carrier, Lion Air offers Economy and Business Class. In Economy Class, passenger gets free up to 20 kg checked baggage allowance, leather seat with 29 inch seat-pitch. Business Class offers a comfortable leather seat with 38 inch seat-pitch, pre-flight drink, free meal and drink as well as a free checked baggage allowance up to 30 kg. Both Economy and Business Class allows baggage cabin up to 10 kg.
Lion Air has the largest number of fleet in the country. It operates more than 80 Boeing 737-900ER, Boeing 737-400 and Boeing 737-800 (Next Generation). The rest 110 planes are still waiting to be delivered to complete the entire purchase of 178 Boeing 737-900ERs. In March 2013, Lion Air signed the purchase contract for 234 Airbus A320s, marked as the largest deal in Airbus purchase history.

The history of Lion Air dates back to when it was still a small airline serving only domestic routes. It all started as the brothers Kusnan and Rusdi Kirana successfully ran their travel service Lion Tours for 13 years. They then decided to make their dreams come true by owning an airline. Currently, Rusdi Kirana holds the position of President Director of Lion Air.
Equipped with soaring ambition and initial fund of USD 10 million, Lion Air was officially established in October 1999. However, it commenced its operation less than a year later, precisely on 30 June 2000 using a Boeing 737-200 PK-LIA.
Until the mid of 2005, Lion Air operated its flights from Terminal 2F of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport along with other international flights, while the other local airlines or domestic flights still operate from Terminal 1. This adds to the airline’s prestige as well as efficiency of Lion Air passengers when they have connecting flights from Indonesia to cities abroad.
But starting 11 October 2010 onward, Lion Air relocated its operation to Terminal 1A, and flights to Sumatera, Batam, Pangkalpinang and Palangkaraya were moved to Terminal 1B. Lion Air’s international routes operate at Terminal 2E.
In 2005, Lion Air already owns 24 McDonnell Douglas MD-82s and 5 De Havilland Canada Dash-8s operated by its subsidiary, Wings Air. As a low-fare airline, Lion Air’s fleet is dominated by the highly efficient and comfortable MD-80. Lion air also commit with their business by offering cheap flight tickets and also promo flights to consumers in Indonesia. For its rejuvenation campaign, Lion Air placed an order of 178 Boeing 737-900ERs, delivered phase by phase from 2007 to 2014.
Lion Air aims to compete with Garuda Indonesia and Saudi Arabian Airlines in serving umroh/haji routes using Boeing 747-400. Two Boeing 747-400s were then added to support the fleet. Another delivery of 208 Boeing 737-9 MAX is scheduled for the coming 2018. In February 2012, Rusdi Kirana signed the purchase of 234 Airbus A320s family delivered directly from Airbus factory in Toulouse, France.
Lion Air's flight attendant wears a red and dark blue upper clothes lined with vertical dark blue. It is the previous corporate colour of Lion dominated by blue and red. A touch of batik on long kebaya skirt is added to the uniform, designed specifically for flexibility of movement in case of emergency.
